Veganism
Narrowly understood, veganism is the practice of excluding all animal products from one’s diet, with the exception of human milk. More broadly, veganism is not only a food ethics, but it encompasses all other areas of life. As defined by the Vegan Society when it became an established charity in the UK in 1979, veganism is best understood as “a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude – as far as is possible and practicable – all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment”.
There are two main moral justifications for veganism, both of which rely on a common
assumption: that sentience, i.e., the capacity to feel pleasure and pain, is the necessary and sufficient trait to be morally considerable. In what follows, I present these two justifications and a third one which, although less popular, captures some core intuitions among vegans. I then present a challenge faced by veganism and two arguments that reject it as discriminatory, and briefly conclude

Geographic distribution and ecological niche of plague in sub-Saharan Africa
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Plague is a rapidly progressing, serious illness in humans that is likely to be fatal if not treated. It remains a public health threat, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. In spite of plague's highly focal nature, a thorough ecological understanding of the general distribution pattern of plague across sub-Saharan Africa has not been established to date. In this study, we used human plague data from sub-Saharan Africa for 1970–2007 in an ecological niche modeling framework to explore the potential geographic distribution of plague and its ecological requirements across Africa.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We predict a broad potential distributional area of plague occurrences across sub-Saharan Africa. General tests of model's transferability suggest that our model can anticipate the potential distribution of plague occurrences in Madagascar and northern Africa. However, generality and predictive ability tests using regional subsets of occurrence points demonstrate the models to be unable to predict independent occurrence points outside the training region accurately. Visualizations show plague to occur in diverse landscapes under wide ranges of environmental conditions.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We conclude that the typical focality of plague, observed in sub-Saharan Africa, is not related to fragmented and insular environmental conditions manifested at a coarse continental scale. However, our approach provides a foundation for testing hypotheses concerning focal distribution areas of plague and their links with historical and environmental factors.</p

Alginate microspheres containing temperature sensitive liposomes (TSL) for MR-guided embolization and triggered release of doxorubicin
Objective
The objective of this study was to develop and characterize alginate microspheres suitable for embolization with on-demand triggered doxorubicin (DOX) release and whereby the microspheres as well as the drug releasing process can be visualized in vivo using MRI.
Methods and Findings
For this purpose, barium crosslinked alginate microspheres were loaded with temperature sensitive liposomes (TSL/TSL-Ba-ms), which release their payload upon mild hyperthermia. These TSL contained DOX and [Gd(HPDO3A)(H2O)], a T1 MRI contrast agent, for real time visualization of the release. Empty alginate microspheres crosslinked with holmium ions (T2* MRI contrast agent, Ho-ms) were mixed with TSL-Ba-ms to allow microsphere visualization. TSL-Ba-ms and Ho-ms were prepared with a homemade spray device and sized by sieving. Encapsulation of TSL in barium crosslinked microspheres changed the triggered release properties only slightly: 95% of the loaded DOX was released from free TSL vs. 86% release for TSL-Ba-ms within 30 seconds in 50% FBS at 42°C. TSL-Ba-ms (76 ± 41 μm) and Ho-ms (64 ± 29 μm) had a comparable size, which most likely will result in a similar in vivo tissue distribution after an i.v. co-injection and therefore Ho-ms can be used as tracer for the TSL-Ba-ms. MR imaging of a TSL-Ba-ms and Ho-ms mixture (ratio 95:5) before and after hyperthermia allowed in vitro and in vivo visualization of microsphere deposition (T2*-weighted images) as well as temperature-triggered release (T1-weighted images). The [Gd(HPDO3A)(H2O)] release and clusters of microspheres containing holmium ions were visualized in a VX2 tumor model in a rabbit using MRI.
Conclusions
In conclusion, these TSL-Ba-ms and Ho-ms are promising systems for real-time, MR-guided embolization and triggered release of drugs in vivo
Prognostic markers in young patients with premature coronary heart disease
AbstractObjectivesTo evaluate the survival and prognostic implications of cardiovascular, inflammatory and prothrombotic risk factors in young patients with premature coronary heart disease (CHD).MethodsFollow-up data were obtained from 353 young patients with a first cardiac event (men ≤45 years and women ≤55 years). Baseline characteristics on traditional risk factors were collected at the time of the first event, and plasma levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), von Willebrand Factor (VWF), and fibrinogen were measured one to three months after the first event to exclude an acute phase response. We performed age and sex adjusted Cox regression analyses to assess the relationship between these factors and recurrent events with three different endpoints: all cause mortality, recurrent cardiac event (myocardial infarction or revascularisation procedure), and any recurrent event (cardiac event, cerebrovascular event or all cause mortality).ResultsDuring a total follow-up time of 1483 person years (mean 4.2 years), 11 patients died (3%), 42 patients had a recurrent cardiac event (12%), and 53 patients had any recurrent event (15%). CRP was associated with an increased risk of any recurrent event (HR 1.28[95% CI = 1.02–1.59] per unit increase in lnCRP). Also, both CRP (5.00[1.04–24.04]) and fibrinogen (5.04[1.05–24.23]) were associated with all cause mortality when levels were above the 50th percentile.ConclusionsFifteen percent of young patients with a first cardiac event have a recurrent event or die within a median follow-up of 4.2 years. In these young patients we have shown that, independently of cardiovascular risk factors, high CRP levels contribute to the risk of recurrent events, including all cause mortality, and high fibrinogen levels are associated with all cause mortality

Comparative Analysis of Process Stability in PBF-LB/M: (Thermal) Highspeed Imaging vs. Melt Pool Monitoring using Novel Gas Mixtures
Powder bed fusion of metals using a laser beam (PBF-LB/M) is increasingly gaining
popularity in the industry. However, ensuring a consistent quality of parts processed by PBF-LB/M
is crucial to compete with established manufacturing processes. In-situ process monitoring
systems, such as coaxial melt pool monitoring (MPM), can contribute to this goal by minimizing
post-process quality control. Three monitoring systems, a commercially available MPM system,
an optical high-speed camera, and a thermal high-speed camera, were compared to identify process
phenomena. Secondly, the suitability of the MPM system for in-situ quality control was tested by
employing novel gas mixtures in the process. The mixtures include argon (Ar) with hydrogen (H2),
helium (He), and carbon dioxide (CO2). The first results showed the capabilities of the MPM
system to monitor relevant process anomalies. Also, the addition of He and H2 to the process gas
resulted in an improvement in the melt pool stability and a reduction of process by-products
