    Choice of departure station by railway users

    This paper applies a multinomial logit model to the choice of a departure railway station by Dutch railway passengers. This is a relevant theme since about 50% of Dutch railway passengers do not travel via the nearest railway station. The passengers’ choices for departure stations are aggregated at the four digit postal code area level. We applied three functional forms for the underlying systematic utility of a station, namely a linear effect of attributes, cross effect of distance and frequency of service, and a translog formulation on distance and frequency of train services. With 3,498 post code areas and 360 railway stations our analysis found consistent effect sizes for distance, frequency of service, intercity status of the station and the presence of park-and-ride facility on the choice of departure station. The effect of distance on the choice of a departure station declines smoothly. The effect of frequency of service is relatively small compared to the effect of distance. A frequency of service increase by a hundred trains per day is equivalent to being 600 m closer to the station. The Intercity status of the station plays the biggest role in the choice of departure station. It has an equivalent effect of a change in 2 km distance or about a frequency of service of 300 trains per day. In addition, the presence of park-and-ride facility in the station poses a sizable effect in the departure station choice. In most cases its effect reaches about 35% of the intercity status effect

    The Impact of Railway Stations on Residential and Commercial Property Value: A Meta-analysis

    Railway stations function as nodes in transport networks and places in an urban environment. They have accessibility and environmental impacts, which contribute to property value. The literature on the effects of railway stations on property value is mixed in its finding in respect to the impact magnitude and direction, ranging from a negative to an insignificant or a positive impact. This paper attempts to explain the variation in the findings by meta-analytical procedures. Generally the variations are attributed to the nature of data, particular spatial characteristics, temporal effects and methodology. Railway station proximity is addressed from two spatial considerations: a local station effect measuring the effect for properties with in 1/4 mile range and a global station effect measuring the effect of coming 250 m closer to the station. We find that the effect of railway stations on commercial property value mainly takes place at short distances. Commercial properties within 1/4 mile rang are 12.2% more expensive than residential properties. Where the price gap between the railway station zone and the rest is about 4.2% for the average residence, it is about 16.4% for the average commercial property. At longer distances the effect on residential property values dominate. We find that for every 250 m a residence is located closer to a station its price is 2.3% higher than commercial properties. Commuter railway stations have a consistently higher positive impact on the property value compared to light and heavy railway/Metro stations. The inclusion of other accessibility variables (such as highways) in the models reduces the level of reported railway station impact. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC

    A multi-modal network approach to model public transport accessibility impacts of bicycle-train integration policies

    In the Netherlands, the bicycle plays an important in station access and, to a lesser extent, in station egress. There is however fairly little knowledge in the potential effects of bicycle-train integration policies. The aim of this paper is to examine the impacts of bicycle-train integration policies on train ridership and job accessibility for public transport users.MethodsWe extended the Dutch National Transport Model (NVM) by implementing a detailed bicycle network linked to the public transport network, access/egress mode combinations and station specific access and egress penalties by mode and station type derived from a stated choice survey. Furthermore, the effects of several bicycletrain integration policy scenarios were examined for a case study for Randstad South, in the Netherlands, comprising a dense train network with 54 train stations.ConclusionsOur analysis shows that improving the quality of bicycle routes and parking can substantially increase train ridership and potential job accessibility for train users. Large and medium stations are more sensitive to improvements in bicycle-train integration policies, while small stations are more sensitive to improvements in the train level of service
