In this study, the performance of HNO3 and NaOH pretreatmentson oil palm mesocarp fiber (OPMF) was evaluated based on the residual carbohydrate. The best pretreatment condition was ascertained for reducing sugar and biosugar produced after saccharification with viscozyme. The pretreatment with 2 % (v/v) HNO3 improved cellulose concentration from 33.14 % to 60.0 %, while hemicellulose, lignin and ash were reduced by 25.59 %, 10.0 % and 25.9 % to 10.0 %, 5.33 % and 3.0 %, respectively. Enzymatic treatment using 1g solid loading, produce highest production in terms of arabinose 10.5 g/l, glucose (1.1 g/L) and xylose (0.42 g/L) was obtained under agitation. While for 10 grams solid loading, highest level of bio-sugar was obtained with arabinose (0.8 g/L) and glucose (1.6 g/L). FESEM-EDX and FTIR images before and after saccharification successfully showed the effect of enzymatic treatment on the mesocarp fiber

Recent trend in residual palm oil recovery in a solid state fermentation

Production of palm oil from palm oil mill industries has been facing a serious challenge of overcoming the oil loss as a result of the mechanical extraction process limitations, consequently, leading to economic and environmental impacts. Efforts were made to overcome this impasse by mechanical process, dissolve air flotation, solvent extraction and enzymatic treatment. Most of these methods applied are faced with a somewhat drawbacks. In this review, the various methods of residual palm oil recovery were discussed, while presenting a better method that could allow for optimum recovery with less or no environmental impact via microbial means in a solid state process. Biological process in a solid state condition with fungi such as the white rot basidiomycetes is considered the best for future application, due to the natural availability of the fungi and high degrading capability of lignocellulose biomass. This would significantly be of benefit in terms of abating the huge oil palm mesocarp fiber deposition and aid in meeting the environmental requirement of waste consumption from the source

How many locations do we need per day to reliably describe the habitat use of translocated rhinos in Manas NP?

The Indian Rhino Vision (IRV) 2020 program was designed in 2005 in Assam for maintaining existing rhino populations and to re-introduce rhinos in the earlier distribution ranges of Assam. The programme was launched on 12th April 2008. The government of Assam with donor support translocated two male rhinos from the Pobitora WLS to the Buraburijhar area under Basbari range in Manas National Park. As a follow up to these translocations to understand the adaptation of the rhinos, it was important to assess the monitoring frequencies, habitat use and distribution pattern of rhinos in the new habitat. Monitoring was primarily based on radio-telemetry techniques and direct observation. The monitoring team maintains a vigil on the released rhinos all round the day and the observations were systematically recorded three times a day. During this exercise it was found that the rhinos prefer to use grasslands, swamps and marshy areas (beels and rivulet). Key Words: Indian Rhino Vision (IRV) 2020, Radio-Telemetry, Translocatio
