    The development of a program analysis environment for Ada

    A unit level, Ada software module testing system, called Query Utility Environment for Software Testing of Ada (QUEST/Ada), is described. The project calls for the design and development of a prototype system. QUEST/Ada design began with a definition of the overall system structure and a description of component dependencies. The project team was divided into three groups to resolve the preliminary designs of the parser/scanner: the test data generator, and the test coverage analyzer. The Phase 1 report is a working document from which the system documentation will evolve. It provides history, a guide to report sections, a literature review, the definition of the system structure and high level interfaces, descriptions of the prototype scope, the three major components, and the plan for the remainder of the project. The appendices include specifications, statistics, two papers derived from the current research, a preliminary users' manual, and the proposal and work plan for Phase 2

    Voluntary Cleanups and Redevelopment Potential: Lessons from Baltimore, Maryland

    Policy has increasingly shifted towards economic incentives and liability attenuation for promoting cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated sites, but little is known about the effectiveness of such policies. An example of such legislation is State Voluntary Cleanup Programs (VCPs), which were established in the US in the 1990s and to date have been implemented in almost every state. We examine Baltimore properties that participated in the Maryland VCP from its inception in 1997 to the end of 2006. Specifically, we examine what type of properties tend to participate in these programs, how these properties compare to other eligible but non-participating sites, and what is the redevelopment potential of VCP properties and implications towards open space conversion. We find that most applicants (66%) actually requested a No Further Action Determination directly, rather than proposing cleanup. VCP properties tend to be industrial, located in industrial areas, and away from residential neighborhoods. In more recent years larger industrial properties have increasingly enrolled in the program. The majority of sites are reused as industrial or commercial. In contrast to Alberini (2007), this suggests that pressure for residential development does not drive VCP participation. Based on differences in zoning requirements, the VCP may reduce demand for potentially contaminating activities on pristine land by as much as 1,238 to 6,444 acres, in Baltimore alone

    Thermal Properties of a Reaction Hot Pressed Mo≤₅Si₃C≤₁ Ceramic

    Mo≤5Si3C≤1 was produced via reaction hot pressing. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed c-axis crystallographic orientation in the hot pressing direction. The orientation, combined with the inherent thermal expansion anisotropy of the structure, led to preferential microcracking and an overall anisotropic thermal expansion in hot pressed ceramics. Thermal conductivity was calculated for temperatures ranging from −120 to 500 °C from measured heat capacity and thermal diffusivity. Over that range, thermal conductivity increased from not, vert, similar9.5 to not, vert, similar21.5 W/m K. Electrical resistivity measurements allowed the separation of electrical and phononic contributions and revealed that the thermal conductivity of Mo≤5Si3C≤1 was dominated by electron transport
