How do Market Concentration and Mimetic Behavior Influence Strategic Renewal?

    Get PDF
In the increasingly dynamic and competitive business environment of today, incumbent firms are facing rapid and profound changes in macro social, economic, political and technological conditions. Such a turbulent setting may disrupt the inertia of the incumbent firms, from a wide range of industries, and urge them to make drastic and often irreversible strategic decisions. Such vital strategic decisions include strategic renewal which, as the literature sustains, is a necessary requirement to remain competitive, but difficult to achieve. This paper aims to develop understanding on major areas of strategic renewal from the point of view of some aspects of the institutional environment. Its goal is to establish the relationship between different market conditions and the way companies react in terms of strategic renewal and change. Moreover it statistically investigates the degree to which companies decide to ā€œrunā€ in their own rhythm or just imitate other incumbent companies in the industry.strategic renewal, mimetic behavior, market concentration, exploitation, exploration.

The maintenance activity isnā€™t a purpose in itself, itā€™s a necessity of which ā€œthe production suffersā€ and the financial agent ā€œconsiders too expensiveā€. It often exists a conflict between the production units and the maintenance department, not only for a short term, but, sometimes, for a long term, imposing a rigorous definition of each personā€™s responsibilities. Considering the mutations in the industrial equipmentsā€™ technical complexity and the accidental failuresā€™ catastrophic consequences from the economic and/or social point of view, it should be assigned a new dimension to the maintenance activity. One of the imperatives imposed to this action is represented by modern means of informing through the maintenanceā€™s operational computerization.maintenanceā€™s progress; total productive maintenance; cooperation in maintenance; the maintenanceā€™s costs minimization; maintenanceā€™s operational computerization.

The firmā€™s position on the market is determined by the value offered by selling its products or offering its services, the public relations depending on the customersā€™ perception of the value of the product or service offered to them, and the position occupied in relation to the competitors is determined by the level of the productā€™s prices and advantages offered by the competition. The price and the value-price ratio are two fundamental variables of which the firmā€™s survival depends in the competitive environment. To ensure the fact that the pricing strategy be a long-term success we must define in the early stage of development-research the value-price ratio, having in view that itā€™s possible for a product with an increased perceived value not to be introduced on the market with a competitive price, an aspect that can be approached using the target costs and target value method, a method that allows to define the production costs limits and fixing the target price to avoid the launching errors.price strategies, perceived value, strategic competitive advantage, target value, value/price ration, optimal level of performance.

When defining a maintenance policy, it must be held in mind the fact that there isnā€™t such a thing like ā€œgood maintenance policyā€ in itself; instead, for each industrial equipment should be adapted a particular maintenance method, coming to a technical-economic compromise through its products, through its market, its equipments, its people, the managersā€™ psychology, the organizational culture and, as a consequence, the industrial maintenance will be different. The present article will pursue to highlight the position of the maintenance activity having in mind the imperatives imposed to this activity, the maintenance methods applied at the international level and the methods that can be applied in our country.maintenance mission; corrective maintenance; systematic preventive maintenance; conditional preventive maintenance; palliative maintenance.
