Partial and Complete Observables for Hamiltonian Constrained Systems
We will pick up the concepts of partial and complete observables introduced
by Rovelli in order to construct Dirac observables in gauge systems. We will
generalize these ideas to an arbitrary number of gauge degrees of freedom.
Different methods to calculate such Dirac observables are developed. For
background independent field theories we will show that partial and complete
observables can be related to Kucha\v{r}'s Bubble Time Formalism. Moreover one
can define a non-trivial gauge action on the space of complete observables and
also state the Poisson brackets of these functions.
Additionally we will investigate, whether it is possible to calculate Dirac
observables starting with partially invariant partial observables, for instance
functions, which are invariant under the spatial diffeomorphism group.Comment: 38 page
Electron recombination with multicharged ions via chaotic many-electron states
We show that a dense spectrum of chaotic multiply-excited eigenstates can
play a major role in collision processes involving many-electron multicharged
ions. A statistical theory based on chaotic properties of the eigenstates
enables one to obtain relevant energy-averaged cross sections in terms of sums
over single-electron orbitals. Our calculation of the low-energy electron
recombination of Au shows that the resonant process is 200 times more
intense than direct radiative recombination, which explains the recent
experimental results of Hoffknecht {\em et al.} [J. Phys. B {\bf 31}, 2415
(1998)].Comment: 9 pages, including 1 figure, REVTe
Gauge and Scheme Dependence of Mixing Matrix Renormalization
We revisit the issue of mixing matrix renormalization in theories that
include Dirac or Majorana fermions. We show how a gauge-variant on-shell
renormalized mixing matrix can be related to a manifestly gauge-independent one
within a generalized scheme of renormalization. This
scheme-dependent relation is a consequence of the fact that in any scheme of
renormalization, the gauge-dependent part of the mixing-matrix counterterm is
ultra-violet safe and has a pure dispersive form. Employing the unitarity
properties of the theory, we can successfully utilize the afore-mentioned
scheme-dependent relation to preserve basic global or local symmetries of the
bare Lagrangian through the entire process of renormalization. As an immediate
application of our study, we derive the gauge-independent renormalization-group
equations of mixing matrices in a minimal extension of the Standard Model with
isosinglet neutrinos.Comment: 31 pages, LaTeX, uses axodraw.st

Design of the Mneme Persistent Object Store
The Mneme project is an investigation of techniques for integrating programming language and database features to provide better support for cooperative, information-intensive tasks such as computer-aided software engineering. The project strategy is to implement efficient, distributed, persistent programming languages. We report here on the Mneme persistent object store, a fundamental component of the project, discussing its design and initial prototype. Mneme stores objects in a simple and general format, preserving object identity and object interrelationships. Specific goals for the store include portability, extensibility (especially with respect to object management policies), and performance. The model of memory that the store aims at is a single, cooperatively-shared heap, distributed across a collection of networked computers. The initial prototype is intended mainly to explore performance issues and to support object-oriented persistent programming languages. We include performance measurements from the prototype as well as more qualitative results
