Sonic Rhetoric and Meaning Making in Video Game Sound Design

    Get PDF
This thesis examines the rhetorical impact of sound in video games from an interdisciplinary perspective. By synthesizing game studies research with rhetorical theory, the thesis puts the works of notable game scholars, such as Karen Collins, Ian Bogost, Iain Hart, and Paul Cairns in conversation with research on sonic rhetoric by scholars such as Tanya K. Rodrigue et. al and Steph Ceraso. The thesis uses a ludomusicological lens to analyze several video games in which sound and music are heavily emphasized elements within the gameplay experience, such as Banjo-Kazooie (Rare, 1998) and Night in the Woods (Infinite Fall, 2015). Through the analyses, the thesis argues that sound in these games contributes to their immersive and engaging game worlds as well as their rhetorical storytelling. The thesis also illustrates how game sounds (or a lack thereof) can function as symbolism and metaphor, help players express themselves through interactivity, and support the medium’s other narrative elements. Finally, the thesis describes the broader implications of its arguments for game studies and rhetorical research, including how sonic rhetoric can function with or against other modalities in games and how sound might be used to engage audiences in other forms of interactive media

The Sacred and the Secular: Blending Borders to Maximize Product Success

    Get PDF
In a society where a person can choose anything he wants from a vast literary buffet, the products that appeal to varied audiences with differing values and interests stand out among the masses. The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren is a prominent example of a product that became explosively successful in two starkly differing markets: the secular and the religious. This research paper explores the history and controversy surrounding the combination of these two markets and the implications they have for each. The triumph of The Purpose Driven Life, as well as other prominent Christian titles, is focused on with regard to the tactics and approaches used by public relations and marketing professionals to sell a Christian product to a secular market. In addition, secular titles that were successful in the Christian marketplace are also explored. This research offers enlightening information on how public relations and marketing professionals can move forward successfully in the face of society’s embrace of religion, and reveals what the best techniques are to accomplish this

Developmental Processes and Psychopathology: Separation-Individuation and Ego Development

Literature dating back to the 1920\u27s has linked the developmental processes of separation-individuation and ego development with each other as well as with psychopathology. The current study explored the relationship between ego development, as measured by Loevinger\u27s (1996) Sentence Completion Test, and sell-representations as measured by Hart and Ward\u27s (1991) Profile of Adolescent Depression and Individuation (PADI). In addition, this study investigated the relationship between self-representations and psychopathology, as measured by the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) (Morey, 1991). Gender differences were also investigated to determine if differences occurred between males and females in analysis of the relationship between separation-individuation and psychopathology. One hundred and ninety individuals completed questionnaires assessing self-representations relevant to the separation-individuation process, level of ego development and psychopathology including suicidal ideation, anxiety related disorders, depression, aggression, borderline features, drug problems and alcohol problems. Due to the lack of variability across ego development levels, no significant results were found in the relationship between ego development and separation-individuation. Self-representations related to ruptures in the separation-individuation process were associated with varying psychopathologies. These findings suggest that individuals who successfully navigate the separation-individuation process are able to call upon internalized resources in times of stress and as a result are able to avoid or minimize psychological symptoms and maladaptive ways of coping
