    [From the Conclusions] The purpose of this study was to discover the truth concerning the relative well-being of tobacco farmers insofar as that well-being has been dependent upon the production of a specific commodity, tobacco. The conclusion reached may be stated quite simply: the tobacco grower has been in a relatively favorable position since 1911 as measured by his terms of exchange and as compared with the growers of previously specified commodities. The arguments for and against the terms of exchange as a measuring device have been stated. No conclusion has been reached as to whether or not the tobacco grower has, since 1911, been subjected to exploitation

    An Assessment of Unmanned Aircraft System Pilot Discomfort and Fatigue

    The rapid growth of unmanned aircraft system (UAS) use in both the military and civil sectors has uncovered an array of challenges within the field. In terms of human factors and ergonomics, the influence of the unique physical design of the control stations used to pilot the unmanned aircraft on local muscular fatigue and discomfort are of great concern. This study was conducted to assess the influence of two display configurations, Side-by-Side (SS) and Stacked (ST), and two chairs, Ergonomic (EC) and Captain’s (CC), on mean and median power frequencies, root mean square amplitude, posture, discomfort, workload, and seat pressure. Sixteen participants [age: 24.75 ± 2.96 years; gender: 4 female/ 12 male; height: 177.56 ± 9.09 cm; weight: 81.37 ± 16.43 kg] completed four, 2-hour simulated UAS flights for all chair/display combinations. Eight participants piloted one, 6-hour simulated UAS flight in the display/chair combination which best minimized discomfort and fatigue in the two-hour flights, EC/SS. During the two-hour flights, muscle activity, discomfort, posture, workload, and seat pressure findings indicated increased muscular fatigue and discomfort over time. Generally, the EC/SS condition appeared to best mitigate muscular fatigue and postures associated with increased risk for the development of musculoskeletal disorders. Six-hour flight data failed to provide additional insights on the influence of extended duration flights on the dependent variables of this study. Finally, linear regression analysis revealed muscle activity can likely be predicted during UAS piloting tasks using the dependent variables in this study; however, the study failed to provide evidence that models built from two-hour data can accurately predict muscle activity out to six hours

    Impact of Military Boots and Military Workload on Balance

    The US Army Annual Injury Epidemiology Report in 2008 reported that 18.4% of all causes of injuries were attributed to falls/near falls (USAPHC, 2008). The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of two military type boots (minimalist and standard) on balance prior to and after a physiological workload. Twentyour healthy male adults completed the study following a repeated measures design and a counter balanced footwear assignment. Participants underwent a balance analysis prior to and after completing a military workload. The dependent kinetic variables from balance tests were analyzed using a 2x2 RM-ANOVA independently, p\u3c0.05. Results demonstrated minimalist boots showed superior balance in most conditions likely due to low mass, low heel-midfoot drop, and thin, hard midsoles; however, standard boots demonstrated greater balance on unstable surfaces likely due to a large sole surface area. Optimal balance would likely be a result of a combination of both boots’ characteristics

    Expansion in the size of electrical service equipment and distribution facilities on farms has increased at a phenomenal rate in the past decade. This expansion has been brought on by the need for improved mechanical production efficiency as a substitute for human labor and the general influences of the revolution of automation and mechanization that have occurred. The basic information on which to base procedures for adequate and efficient design of these farmstead wiring and distribution facilities is obviously lacking. There is a need for more accurate and up-to-date analyses of actual conditions that exist in the electric wiring systems of farms. The major factors in planning farmstead wiring components are safety, adequacy, and efficiency. Existing state and national wiring codes set forth the standards for safety for such electrical installations (4,8). Adequacy and efficiency concern the use of equipment and facilities that provide satisfactory service in a manner consistent with economic feasibility. This study concerned itself with the basic factors that showed actual conditions of voltage, current, and power that existed on farms. These recorded conditions were analyzed in various relationships to actual wiring and distribution equipment in use on these same farms
