Radiation-induced oscillatory magnetoresistance as a sensitive probe of the zero-field spin splitting in high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs devices
We suggest an approach for characterizing the zero-field spin splitting of
high mobility two-dimensional electron systems, when beats are not readily
observable in the Shubnikov-de Haas effect. The zero-field spin splitting and
the effective magnetic field seen in the reference frame of the electron is
evaluated from a quantitative study of beats observed in radiation-induced
magnetoresistance oscillations.Comment: 4 pages, 4 color figure
Abelian and nonabelian vector field effective actions from string field theory
The leading terms in the tree-level effective action for the massless fields
of the bosonic open string are calculated by integrating out all massive fields
in Witten's cubic string field theory. In both the abelian and nonabelian
theories, field redefinitions make it possible to express the effective action
in terms of the conventional field strength. The resulting actions reproduce
the leading terms in the abelian and nonabelian Born-Infeld theories, and
include (covariant) derivative corrections.Comment: 49 pages, 1 eps figur
Decay of Unstable D-branes with Electric Field
Using the techniques of two dimensional conformal field theory we construct
time dependent classical solutions in open string theory describing the decay
of an unstable D-brane in the presence of background electric field, and
explicitly evaluate the time dependence of the energy momentum tensor and the
fundamental string charge density associated with this solution. The final
decay product can be interpreted as a combination of stretched fundamental
strings and tachyon matter.Comment: 35 pages, LaTe
NS Ghost Slivers
Neveu-Schwarz ghost slivers in pictures zero and minus one are constructed.
In particular, using algebraic methods , ghost sliver in the -1
picture is obtained. The algebraic method consists in solving a projector
equation in an algebra, where the multiplication is defined by a pure 3-string
vertex without any insertions at the string midpoint. We show that this
projector is a sliver in a twisted version of , conformal
theory. We also show that the product of the twisted , and ,
ghost slivers solves an equation that appears after a special
rescaling of super VSFT.Comment: 27 pages, LATE
Rolling Tachyon
We discuss construction of classical time dependent solutions in open string
(field) theory, describing the motion of the tachyon on unstable D-branes.
Despite the fact that the string field theory action contains infinite number
of time derivatives, and hence it is not a priori clear how to set up the
initial value problem, the theory contains a family of time dependent solutions
characterized by the initial position and velocity of the tachyon field. We
write down the world-sheet action of the boundary conformal field theories
associated with these solutions and study the corresponding boundary states.
For D-branes in bosonic string theory, the energy momentum tensor of the system
evolves asymptotically towards a finite limit if we push the tachyon in the
direction in which the potential has a local minimum, but hits a singularity if
we push it in the direction where the potential is unbounded from below.Comment: LaTeX file, 20 pages, references adde
Evolving consensus for immunomodulatory therapy in non-infectious uveitis during the COVID-19 pandemic
Background Immunomodulatory therapy (IMT) is often considered for systemic treatment of non-infectious uveitis (NIU). During the evolving coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, given the concerns related to IMT and the increased risk of infections, an urgent need for guidance on the management of IMT in patients with uveitis has emerged. Methods A cross-sectional survey of international uveitis experts was conducted. An expert steering committee identified clinical questions on the use of IMT in patients with NIU during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using an interactive online questionnaire, guided by background experience and knowledge, 139 global uveitis experts generated consensus statements for IMT. In total, 216 statements were developed around when to initiate, continue, decrease and stop systemic and local corticosteroids, conventional immunosuppressive agents and biologics in patients with NIU. Thirty-one additional questions were added, related to general recommendations, including the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and hydroxychloroquine. Results Highest consensus was achieved for not initiating IMT in patients who have suspected or confirmed COVID-19, and for using local over systemic corticosteroid therapy in patients who are at high-risk and very high-risk for severe or fatal COVID-19. While there was a consensus in starting or initiating NSAIDs for the treatment of scleritis in healthy patients, there was no consensus in starting hydroxychloroquine in any risk groups. Conclusion Consensus guidelines were proposed based on global expert opinion and practical experience to bridge the gap between clinical needs and the absence of medical evidence, to guide the treatment of patients with NIU during the COVID-19 pandemic.Ophthalmic researc
Hamstring muscles: Architecture and innervation
Knowledge of the anatomical organization of the hamstring muscles is necessary to understand their functions, and to assist in the development of accurate clinical and biomechanical models. The hamstring muscles were examined by dissection in six embalmed human lower limbs with the purpose of clarifying their gross morphology. In addition to obtaining evidence for or against anatomical partitioning ( as based on muscle architecture and pattern of innervation), data pertaining to architectural parameters such as fascicular length, volume, physiological cross-sectional area, and tendon length were collected. For each muscle, relatively consistent patterns of innervation were identified between specimens, and each was unique with respect to anatomical organization. On the basis of muscle architecture, three regions were identified within semimembranosus. However, this was not completely congruent with the pattern of innervation, as a primary nerve branch supplied only two regions, with the third region receiving a secondary branch. Semitendinosus comprised two distinct partitions arranged in series that were divided by a tendinous inscription. A singular muscle nerve or a primary nerve branch innervated each partition. In the biceps femoris long head the two regions were supplied via a primary nerve branch which divided into two primary branches or split into a series of branches. Being the only muscle to cross a single joint, biceps femoris short head consisted of two distinct regions demarcated by fiber direction, with each innervated by a separate muscle nerve. Architecturally, each muscle differed with respect to parameters such as physiological cross-sectional area, fascicular length and volume, but generally all partitions within an individual muscle were similar in fascicular length. The long proximal and distal tendons of these muscles extended into the muscle bellies thereby forming elongated musculotendinous junctions. Copyright (C) 2005 S. Karger AG, Basel
Type 2 Endoleak With or Without Intervention and Survival After Endovascular Aneurysm Repair
Objective: The aims of the present study were to examine the impact of type 2 endoleaks (T2EL) on overall survival and to determine the need for secondary intervention after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). Methods: A multicentre retrospective cohort study in the Netherlands was conducted among patients with an infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) who underwent EVAR between 2007 and 2012. The primary endpoint was overall survival for patients with (T2EL+) or without (T2EL-) a T2EL. Secondary endpoints were sac growth, AAA rupture, and secondary intervention. Kaplan–Meier survival and multivariable Cox regression analysis were used. Results: A total of 2 018 patients were included. The median follow up was 62.1 (range 0.1 – 146.2) months. No difference in overall survival was found between T2EL+ (n = 388) and T2EL- patients (n = 1630) (p =.54). The overall survival estimates at five and 10 years were 73.3%/69.4% and 45.9%/44.1% for T2EL+/T2EL- patients, respectively. Eighty-five of 388 (21.9%) T2EL+ patients underwent a secondary intervention. There was no difference in overall survival between T2EL+ patients who underwent a secondary intervention and those who were treated conservatively (p =.081). Sac growth was observed in 89 T2EL+ patients and 44/89 patients (49.4%) underwent a secondary intervention. In 41/44 cases (93.1%), sac growth was still observed after the intervention, but was left untreated. Aneurysm rupture occurred in 4/388 T2EL patients. In Cox regression analysis, higher age, ASA classification, and maximum iliac diameter were significantly associated with worse overall survival. Conclusion: No difference in overall survival was found between T2EL+ and T2EL- patients. Also, patients who underwent a secondary intervention did not have better survival compared with those who did not undergo a secondary intervention. This study reinforces the need for conservative treatment of an isolated T2EL and the importance of a prospective study to determine possible advantages of the intervention
