Considerations on the Role of Fall-Back Discs in the Final Stages of the Common Envelope Binary Interaction
The common envelope interaction is thought to be the gateway to all evolved
compact binaries and mergers. Hydrodynamic simulations of the common envelope
interaction between giant stars and their companions are restricted to the
dynamical, fast, in-spiral phase. They find that the giant envelope is lifted
during this phase, but remains mostly bound to the system. At the same time,
the orbital separation is greatly reduced, but in most simulations it levels
off? at values larger than measured from observations. We conjectured that
during the post-in-spiral phase the bound envelope gas will return to the
system. Using hydrodynamic simulations, we generate initial conditions for our
simulation that result in a fall-back disk with total mass and angular momentum
in line with quantities from the simulations of Passy et al. We find that the
simulated fall-back event reduces the orbital separation efficiently, but fails
to unbind the gas before the separation levels off once again. We also find
that more massive fall-back disks reduce the orbital separation more
efficiently, but the efficiency of unbinding remains invariably very low. From
these results we deduce that unless a further energy source contributes to
unbinding the envelope (such as was recently tested by Nandez et al.), all
common envelope interactions would result in mergers. On the other hand,
additional energy sources are unlikely to help, on their own, to reduce the
orbital separation. We conclude by discussing our dynamical fall-back event in
the context of a thermally-regulated post-common envelope phase.Comment: 12 pages, 12 pages, Accepted to MNRA
Statistics of the fractional polarisation of extragalactic dusty sources in Planck HFI maps
We estimate the average fractional polarisation at 143, 217 and 353 GHz of a
sample of 4697 extragalactic dusty sources by applying stacking technique. The
sample is selected from the second version of the Planck Catalogue of Compact
Sources at 857 GHz, avoiding the region inside the Planck Galactic mask (fsky ~
60 per cent). We recover values for the mean fractional polarisation at 217 and
353 GHz of (3.10 \pm 0.75) per cent and (3.65 \pm 0.66) per cent, respectively,
whereas at 143 GHz we give a tentative value of (3.52 \pm 2.48) per cent. We
discuss the possible origin of the measured polarisation, comparing our new
estimates with those previously obtained from a sample of radio sources. We
test different distribution functions and we conclude that the fractional
polarisation of dusty sources is well described by a log-normal distribution,
as determined in the radio band studies. For this distribution we estimate
{\mu}_{217GHz} = 0.3 \pm 0.5 (that would correspond to a median fractional
polarisation of {\Pi}_{med} = (1.3 \pm 0.7) per cent) and {\mu}_{353GHz} = 0.7
\pm 0.4 ({\Pi}_{med} = (2.0 \pm 0.8) per cent), {\sigma}_{217GHz} = 1.3 \pm 0.2
and {\sigma}_{353GHz} = 1.1 \pm 0.2. With these values we estimate the source
number counts in polarisation and the contribution given by these sources to
the CMB B-mode angular power spectrum at 217, 353, 600 and 800 GHz. We conclude
that extragalactic dusty sources might be an important contaminant for the
primordial B-mode at frequencies > 217 GHz.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1703.0995
Reduction of gait abnormalities in type 2 diabetic patients due to physical activity: a quantitative evaluation based on statistical gait analysis
The aim of this study is the objective assessment of gait abnormalities in diabetic patients and the quantification of the benefits of physical activity in improving the gait quality. Patients were equipped with foot-switches and knee goniometers and were asked to walk at their natural pace for 2.5 minutes. A statistical gait analysis was performed extracting from hundreds of strides the ‘atypical' cycles, i.e. the cycles which do not show the usual sequence of gait phases (heel contact, flat foot contact, push off, swing), the duration of the heel contact phase and the knee kinematics in the sagittal plane. A sample population of 27 non-neuropathic type 2 diabetic patients was examined before and after attending a light-intensity physical activity program that lasted four months. A fuzzy classifier was used to assign a score to the gait abnormalities of each patient in baseline conditions and after the program completion. More than 50% of the subjects reduced significantly their gait abnormalities and, on the average, the most frequent improvements were the reduction of atypical cycles and heel contact duration. Furthermore we found that, in basal conditions, the left side is more affected by gait abnormalities than the right one (P < 0.003
Providing End-to-End Connectivity to SIP User Agents Behind NATs
The widespread diffusion of private networks in SOHO scenarios is fostering an increased deployment of Network Address Translators (NATs). The presence of NATs seriously limits end-to-end connectivity and prevents protocols like the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) from working properly. This document shows how the Address List Extension (ALEX), which was originally developed to provide dual-stack and multi-homing support to SIP, can be used, with minor modifications, to ensure end-to-end connectivity for both media and signaling flows, without relying on intermediate relay nodes whenever it is possibl
Swimmers in thin films: from swarming to hydrodynamic instabilities
We investigate theoretically the collective dynamics of a suspension of low
Reynolds number swimmers that are confined to two dimensions by a thin fluid
film. Our model swimmer is characterized by internal degrees of freedom which
locally exert active stresses (force dipoles or quadrupoles) on the fluid. We
find that hydrodynamic interactions mediated by the film can give rise to
spontaneous continuous symmetry breaking (swarming), to states with either
polar or nematic homogeneous order. For dipolar swimmers, the stroke averaged
dynamics are enough to determine the leading contributions to the collective
behaviour. In contrast, for quadrupolar swimmers, our analysis shows that
detailed features of the internal dynamics play an important role in
determining the bulk behaviour. In the broken symmetry phases, we investigate
fluctuations of hydrodynamic variables of the system and find that these
destabilize order. Interestingly, this instability is not generic and depends
on length-scale.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, references added, typos corrected, new

Follow-up study of over three years of patients with uveitis after cataract phacoemulsification: outcomes and complications
Purpose: To evaluate the rate and onset of intraoperative and postoperative complications post-phacoemulsification.
Methods: One hundred sixty-two eyes of 145 patients with uveitis who underwent phacoemulsification
between 2006 and 2009 were identified through surgical record review. Fifty-nine eyes of 46 patients met
the inclusion criteria. Hazard ratio (HR) and Kaplan-Meier survival probability were calculated for each class
of uveitis. Results: Macular edema (ME) resulted to be associated to chronic postoperative inflammation
(r = 0.6; p = 0.00) and mostly related to patients who presented more than one postoperative relapse/year (r = 0.2;
p = 0.02). Fuchs uveitis resulted to be a risk factor for posterior capsule opacification (PCO) (HR 3.36
IC95%1.0-10.5; p = 0.03). Hypotony and elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) were detected in the anterior uveitis
group (0.02 EY). Conclusion: The HR to develop ME was significantly related to chronic anterior uveitis. PCO
and elevated IOP are
