    High Density Mesoscopic Atom Clouds in a Holographic Atom Trap

    We demonstrate the production of micron-sized high density atom clouds of interest for meso- scopic quantum information processing. We evaporate atoms from 60 microK, 3x10^14 atoms/cm^3 samples contained in a highly anisotropic optical lattice formed by interfering di racted beams from a holographic phase plate. After evaporating to 1 microK by lowering the con ning potential, in less than a second the atom density reduces to 8x10^13 cm^- 3 at a phase space density approaching unity. Adiabatic recompression of the atoms then increases the density to levels in excess of 1x10^15 cm^-3. The resulting clouds are typically 8 microns in the longest dimension. Such samples are small enough to enable mesoscopic quantum manipulation using Rydberg blockade and have the high densities required to investigate new collision phenomena.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR

    Effective Discharge for Suspended Sediment Transport in Streams of the Saskatchewan River Basin

    Effective discharge for suspended sediment load was determined for 21 sites in the Saskatchewan River basin at which sediment records range from 5 to 29 years in length. The drainage areas for these streams ranges from 10 to over 300,000 km2. The sediment discharge histograms have a variety of forms ranging from the classic unimodal form in which the peak occurs at discharges with a duration of 1–3% to those in which the effective discharge is the extreme event of record and cases in which a single effective discharge is difficult to define. The percentage duration of the effective-discharge ranges from less than 0.1% to over 15%, a greater range than previously has been reported. There is an obvious tendency for the percentage duration of the effective discharge to increase with drainage area and hence downstream through the drainage system

    Spatial and Temporal Patterns of Suspended-Sediment Yield in the Saskatchewan River Basin

    Long-term suspended-sediment concentration and load records are available for 23 Water Survey of Canada sediment-monitoring stations in the Saskatchewan River basin, where the drainage areas range from 10 to over 300 000 km2. Mean annual sediment yield is greatest in the western Alberta Plains along the Oldman and Red Deer rivers (over 100 t km−2 year−1) and tends to increase downstream along the North and South Saskatchewan rivers until major reservoirs in Saskatchewan intervene. Average sediment concentration shows a pattern of variation similar to that of yield. Temporal aspects of suspended-sediment transport vary along the drainage network. The range and skewness of the yield–duration and concentration–duration curves are greater in the intermediate-size basins close to the Rocky Mountains and in two small basins with Prairie sources than they are in the large Prairie streams with mountain sources and the glacier-fed upper North Saskatchewan River. Similarly, infrequent flows transport a larger proportion of the annual load in the smaller Foothills and western Plains basins than in the large Prairie streams because of differences in drainage area and discharge regime

    Age and size at maturity: sex, environmental variability and developmental thresholds

    In most organisms, transitions between different life-history stages occur later and at smaller sizes as growth conditions deteriorate. Day and Rowe recently proposed that this pattern could be explained by the existence of developmental thresholds (minimum sizes or levels of condition below which transitions are unable to proceed). The developmental-threshold model predicts that the reaction norm of age and size at maturity will rotate in an anticlockwise manner from positive to a shallow negative slope if: (i) initial body size or condition is reduced; and/or (ii) some individuals encounter poor growth conditions at increasingly early developmental stages. We tested these predictions by rearing replicated populations of soil mites Sancassania berlesei (Michael) under different growth conditions. High-food environments produced a vertical relationship between age and size at maturity. The slope became increasingly shallow as food was reduced. By contrast, high food in the maternal environment reduced the slope of the reaction norm of age and size at maturity, whereas low food increased it. Overall, the reaction norm of age and size at maturity in S. berlesei was significantly nonlinear and differed for males and females.     Methods for Evaluating Respondent Attrition in Web-Based Surveys

    Background: Electronic surveys are convenient, cost effective, and increasingly popular tools for collecting information. While the online platform allows researchers to recruit and enroll more participants, there is an increased risk of participant dropout in Web-based research. Often, these dropout trends are simply reported, adjusted for, or ignored altogether. Objective: To propose a conceptual framework that analyzes respondent attrition and demonstrates the utility of these methods with existing survey data. Methods: First, we suggest visualization of attrition trends using bar charts and survival curves. Next, we propose a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) to detect or confirm significant attrition points. Finally, we suggest applications of existing statistical methods to investigate the effect of internal survey characteristics and patient characteristics on dropout. In order to apply this framework, we conducted a case study; a seventeen-item Informed Decision-Making (IDM) module addressing how and why patients make decisions about cancer screening. Results: Using the framework, we were able to find significant attrition points at Questions 4, 6, 7, and 9, and were also able to identify participant responses and characteristics associated with dropout at these points and overall. Conclusions: When these methods were applied to survey data, significant attrition trends were revealed, both visually and empirically, that can inspire researchers to investigate the factors associated with survey dropout, address whether survey completion is associated with health outcomes, and compare attrition patterns between groups. The framework can be used to extract information beyond simple responses, can be useful during survey development, and can help determine the external validity of survey results

    Detoxification in rehabilitation in England: effective continuity of care or unhappy bedfellows?

    There is evidence that residential detoxification alone does not provide satisfactory treatment outcomes and that outcomes are significantly enhanced when clients completing residential detoxification attend rehabilitation services (Gossop, Marsden, Stewart, & Rolfe, 1999; Ghodse, Reynolds, Baldacchino, et al., 2002). One way of increasing the likelihood of this continuity of treatment is by providing detoxification and rehabilitation within the same treatment facility to prevent drop-out, while the client awaits a rehabilitation bed or in the transition process. However, there is little research evidence available on the facilities that offer both medical detoxification and residential rehabilitation. The current study compares self-reported treatment provision in 87 residential rehabilitation services in England, 34 of whom (39.1%) reported that they offered detoxification services within their treatment programmes. Although there were no differences in self-reported treatment philosophies, residential rehabilitation services that offered detoxification were typically of shorter duration overall, had significantly more beds and reported offering more group work than residential rehabilitation services that did not offer detoxification. Outcomes were also different, with twice as many clients discharged on disciplinary grounds from residential rehabilitation services without detoxification facilities. The paper questions the UK classification of residential drug treatment services as either detoxification or rehabilitation and suggests the need for greater research focus on the aims, processes and outcomes of this group of treatment providers
