Assessing the impact of amended building regulations on the operations of UK construction companies
The UK government continues to make regular amendments to building regulations. This is in order to keep these regulations relevant to today’s prevailing construction environment. More recently, UK building regulations have been amended to facilitate the introduction of the sustainability concepts in UK building design and delivery. This paper examines the impact that these amendments on the operations of UK Construction companies. To conduct the study, five major building practitioners were interviewed. We found from this preliminary study that changes to building regulations do have a considerable impact on the operations of UK Construction companies. It is however important to highlight that a full assessment of the impact of these changes in building regulations is still not fully assessed due to the limitations with the sample size
Feeding Techniques To Increase Calf Growth In The First Two Months Of Life
End of project reportData from Cornell University and the University of Illinois in the USA suggested that average daily liveweight gains of 900 to 1000 g/calf/day could be achieved from birth to weaning provided the calf milk replacer (CMR) is formulated to meet the calf’s amino acid requirements for such a rate of gain. Their findings suggested a daily milk replacer DM allowance of 1250 to 1500 g/d with a crude protein content of 26 to 30%. A series of studies were undertaken, at ARINI with home born dairy calves and at Grange Beef Research Centre with purchased dairy calves, to determine the effect of increasing the daily milk replacer DM allowance and or increasing the crude protein content of the CMR on calf performance. The
main outcomes of these studies were
There was no growth or intake response in any of the studies to increasing the crude
protein content of the CMP from 23% to 28%.
Calf growth rates responded to increasing the dailymilk replacer allowance from 600
to 1200 g/day for both home bred and purchased calves. However, the effect was not
significant post-weaning in any of the studies.
In all of the studies (for both home reared and purchased calves) feeding a high level
of CMRdecreased concentrate DM intake. However, the calves concentrate intakes
were similar post-weaning.
The home bred calves with free access to the milk replacer feeders failed to consume
their 1200 g/day allowance. Calves offered 600 or 1200 g of CMR/day had average
consumption of 554 and 944 g/d, respectively, in the milk feeding period.
Feeding a high (1200 g/d) compared to a low level (600 g/d) CMRdiet for the first 56
days had no significant effect on carcass weight or carcass characteristics when
purchased male calves were slaughtered off an ad libitum concentrate diet after 388
days. The final carcass weights were 231 and 240 kg for the respective 600 and 1200
g/d CMR.
Reducing the fat content of the CMRfrom 18% to 12% did not have any effect on
concentrate intake or liveweight gain
Modelling the Strategic Alignment of Software Requirements using Goal Graphs
This paper builds on existing Goal Oriented Requirements Engineering (GORE)
research by presenting a methodology with a supporting tool for analysing and
demonstrating the alignment between software requirements and business
objectives. Current GORE methodologies can be used to relate business goals to
software goals through goal abstraction in goal graphs. However, we argue that
unless the extent of goal-goal contribution is quantified with verifiable
metrics and confidence levels, goal graphs are not sufficient for demonstrating
the strategic alignment of software requirements. We introduce our methodology
using an example software project from Rolls-Royce. We conclude that our
methodology can improve requirements by making the relationships to business
problems explicit, thereby disambiguating a requirement's underlying purpose
and value.Comment: v2 minor updates: 1) bitmap images replaced with vector, 2) reworded

Structural analysis: a tool for testing 3D computer reconstructions of Thule whalebone houses
One criticism of computer modeling in archaeology is that the visual products suggest a higher degree of knowledge of the structure or site than the data warrant, and that they represent only one of several possible outcomes. This paper discusses the benefits of structural analysis as a means of testing 3D computer reconstructions based on limited archaeological data. Thule Inuit whalebone houses will be used as case studies for testing structural behavior. The Thule people are the cultural and biological ancestors of contemporary Inuit societies of the North American arctic. Thule culture developed in the Bering Strait region, and its presence in the Canadian Arctic was established via migration by AD 1300 (Mathiassen 1927; McCullough 1989). The use of whalebone as a construction material by Thule families, in part, represents an adaptation to life in driftwood-poor regions of the Arctic Archipelago (Mathiassen 1927). Structural analysis led us to consider the premise that certain bones, because of their lower strength as structural elements, must have been selected primarily for their ceremonial value in the design of these unique structures
What Really Matters: An Empirical Study on the Relative Importance of the CIO and the Maturity of the IS Organization in Producing Effective IS Performance
How do IS leader effectiveness and IS organizational maturity impact IS unit effectiveness? Drawing on existing CIO capabilities literature, IS organizational maturity literature and IS effectiveness literature, this paper proposes to gather and analyze survey data to compare the capabilities of the CIO with the IS unit’s organizational maturity to empirically determine which more influences IS effectiveness. The role of CIO in creating IS unit organizational maturity will also be tested
