    Cosmic Strings, Zero Modes and SUSY breaking in Nonabelian N=1 Gauge Theories

    We investigate the microphysics of cosmic strings in Nonabelian gauge theories with N=1 supersymmetry. We give the vortex solutions in a specific example and demonstrate that fermionic superconductivity arises because of the couplings and interactions dictated by supersymmetry. We then use supersymmetry transformations to obtain the relevant fermionic zero modes and investigate the role of soft supersymmetry breaking on the existence and properties of the superconducting strings.Comment: 12 pages, RevTex, submitted to Phys.     Activity And Localization Of Maltodextrin Binding Site Mutants Of Glycogen Synthase In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae

    Mentor: Wayne A. WilsonGlycogen is a glucose polymer formed by the enzyme glycogen synthase and is used in many organisms to store chemical energy. Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker’s yeast) was used to study the activity and localization of glycogen synthase. Genes GSY1 and GSY2 encode glycogen synthase. GSY2 is responsible for the formation of Gsy2p, whose action accounts for ~90% of glycogen synthase activity; the remainder of total glycogen synthase activity stems from Gsy1p. Because glycogen synthase binds to glycogen, it can be used to determine glycogen localization. Glycogen synthase can appear in distinct patterns throughout the cell. Gsy2p has been shown to be regulated by phosphorylation. Phosphorylation of Gsy2p leads to inactivation of the enzyme, a decrease in glycogen storage, and a more localized pattern of glycogen synthase. Conversely, lowering the phosphorylation state of Gsy2p results in increased glycogen production and delocalization of glycogen synthase throughout the cell. Glucose-6-P (glucose-6-phosphate) activates glycogen synthase regardless of its phosphorylation state. We obtained a set of plasmids from a collaborator, encoding Gsy2p mutated at sites believed to be involved with maltodextrin binding. Maltodextrin is a chain of 20 or fewer dextrose molecules with α (1→4) glycosidic bonds. A protein sequence involved in maltodextrin binding likely would also bind to glycogen. Our task was to discover the localization pattern shown by the maltodextrin binding site mutants of glycogen synthase using a GFP tag on GSY2.     Predictive analysis of a hydrodynamics application on large-scale CMP clusters

    We present the development of a predictive performance model for the high-performance computing code Hydra, a hydrodynamics benchmark developed and maintained by the United Kingdom Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE). The developed model elucidates the parallel computation of Hydra, with which it is possible to predict its runtime and scaling performance on varying large-scale chip multiprocessor (CMP) clusters. A key feature of the model is its granularity; with the model we are able to separate the contributing costs, including computation, point-to-point communications, collectives, message buffering and message synchronisation. The predictions are validated on two contrasting large-scale HPC systems, an AMD Opteron/ InfiniBand cluster and an IBM BlueGene/P, both of which are located at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in the US. We validate the model on up to 2,048 cores, where it achieves a > 85% accuracy in weak-scaling studies. We also demonstrate use of the model in exposing the increasing costs of collectives for this application, and also the influence of node density on network accesses, therefore highlighting the impact of machine choice when running this hydrodynamics application at scale

    Modifying monolayer behaviour by incorporating subphase additives and improving Langmuir–Blodgett thin film deposition on optical fibres

    Experiments showing the possibility of modifying the behaviour of calix[4]resorcinarene monolayers at the air–water interface and optimising the deposition of multilayer coatings onto optical fibres are presented. The nature of the subphase is fundamental to the behaviour of monolayers and their utility in coating and sensing applications. Here we show initial studies exploring the modification of the calix[4]resorcinarene monolayer–water interaction through the introduction of dipole altering alcohol additives to the aqueous subphase. We explored the effect of this modification for three small alcohols. The resulting isotherms of the materials showed a reduction in the surface pressure and area per molecule required in order for the monolayer to reach its point of collapse. Incorporation of alcohols shifted the point of collapse, leading to the application of ethanol being successful in improving the transfer of material via Langmuir–Blodgett coating onto optical fibres at lower pressures. This method may prove useful in allowing greater control over future sensor surface coatings

    Fermionic Zero Modes of Supergravity Cosmic Strings

    Recent developments in string theory suggest that cosmic strings could be formed at the end of brane inflation. Supergravity provides a realistic model to study the properties of strings arising in brane inflation. Whilst the properties of cosmic strings in flat space-time have been extensively studied there are significant complications in the presence of gravity. We study the effects of gravitation on cosmic strings arising in supergravity. Fermion zero modes are a common feature of cosmic strings, and generically occur in supersymmetric models. The corresponding massless currents can give rise to stable string loops (vortons). The vorton density in our universe is strongly constrained, allowing many theories with cosmic strings to be ruled out. We investigate the existence of fermion zero modes on cosmic strings in supergravity theories. A general index theorem for the number of zero modes is derived. We show that by including the gravitino, some (but not all) zero modes disappear. This weakens the constraints on cosmic string models. In particular, winding number one cosmic D-strings in models of brane inflation are not subject to vorton constraints.     Therapy outcome measure for inducible laryngeal obstruction and chronic cough: development and testing of reliability and validity

    A Therapy Outcome Measure (TOM) is a practical tool for measuring outcomes of care, providing a quick and simple measure which can be used over time in a routine clinical setting. The TOM allows therapists to reflect on the dimensions of impairment, activity, participation, and well-being on an 11-point ordinal scale. Currently there are no therapy outcome measures for Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction (ILO) and Chronic Cough (CC). The purpose of this study was to develop two TOMs, one for ILO (TOM ILO) and one for CC (TOM CC), and to test the reliability and validity of each. Respiratory professionals working with patients with ILO and CC from eight UK locations received training in the use of TOM ILO and TOM CC. Face validity, inter-rater reliability and test-retest reliability were tested and analysed. TOM ILO and TOM CC both have strong face validity. The TOM ILO had strong intra-rater reliability and inter-rater reliability. The TOM CC had poor intra-rater but strong inter-rater reliability. TOM ILO and TOM CC have readily been adapted by those who received training. TOM ILO and TOM CC can now be used as a validated outcome measure
