Mapping the e-Learning Assessment Domain: Concept Maps for Orientation and Navigation
Concept or Topic Maps have long been used as a method of categorizing and organizing information about a domain. Building them can help people conceptualize an area and spot trends or gaps, and as a presentation method they quickly provide an overview and general impression of a space. We are currently constructing a Reference Model of the Assessment Domain that takes the form of a highly interlinked dynamic website. This represents the assessment domain via the software, projects, standards and use cases of which it is composed. In this paper we present our efforts to create complimentary concept maps of the assessment domain, not as an overview, but for navigation and orientation within the domain. These concept maps, which model resources and activities independently, have been corroborated with practitioners in the e-learning community
Anarchism and Health
This article looks at what anarchism has to offer in debates concerning health and healthcare. I present the case that anarchism’s interest in supporting the poor, sick, and marginalized, and rejection of state and corporate power, places it in a good position to offer creative ways to address health problems. I maintain that anarchistic values of autonomy, responsibility, solidarity, and community are central to this endeavor. Rather than presenting a case that follows one particular anarchist theory, my main goal is to raise issues and initiate debate in this underresearched field in mainstream bioethics
Comparing the Measured and Thermodynamically Predicted AFm Phases in a Hydrating Cement
In hydrating Portland cements, more than one of the AFm family of calcium aluminates may exist. Depending on the amount of carbonate and sulfate present in the cement, the most common phase to precipitate is monosulfate, monocarbonate and/or hemicarbonate. It has been reported in the literature that hemicarbonate often appears in measurements such as XRD but not predicted to form/equilibrate in thermodynamic models. With the ongoing use of commercial cements such as CEM I and CEM II containing more and more limestone, it is important to understand which hydrate solids physically precipitate and numerically predict over time. Using 27 cement samples with three w/c ratios analysed at 1, 3 and 28 days, this paper shows that although hemicarbonate was observed in a hydrating commercial Portland cement, as well as being predicted based on its carbonate (CO2/Al2O3) and sulfate (SO3/Al2O3) ratios, thermodynamic analysis did not predict it to equilibrate and form as a solid hydrate. Regardless of the w/c ratio, thermodynamic analysis did predict hemicarbonate to form for calcite contents \u3c 2 wt.%. It appears that the dominant stability of monocarbonate in thermodynamic models leads to it precipitating and remaining as a persistent phase
