Coherent coupling between surface plasmons and excitons in semiconductor nanocrystals
We present an experimental demonstration of strong coupling between a surface
plasmon propagating on a planar silver substrate, and the lowest excited state
of CdSe nanocrystals. Variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements
demonstrated the formation of plasmon-exciton mixed states, characterized by a
Rabi splitting of 82 meV at room temperature. Such a coherent
interaction has the potential for the development of plasmonic non-linear
devices, and furthermore, this system is akin to those studied in cavity
quantum electrodynamics, thus offering the possibility to study the regime of
strong light-matter coupling in semiconductor nanocrystals at easily accessible
experimental conditions.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
Research in particles and fields
The astrophysical aspects of cosmic rays and gamma rays and of the electromagnetic field environment of the Earth and other planets are investigated. These investigations are carried out by means of energetic particle and photon detector systems flown on spacecraft and balloons
Spectral reflectances of natural targets for use in remote sensing studies
A collection of spectral reflectances of 156 natural targets is presented in a uniform format. For each target both a graphical plot and a digital tabulation of reflectance is given. The data were taken from the literature and include laboratory, field, and aircraft measurements. A discussion of the different measurements of reflectance is given, along with the changes in apparent reflectance when targets are viewed through the atmosphere. The salient features of the reflectance curves of common target types are presented and discussed
Research in particles and fields
The astrophysical aspects of cosmic rays and gamma rays and the radiation and electromagnetic field environment of the Earth and other planets are investigated. These investigations are carried out by means of energetic particle and photon detector systems flown on spacecraft and balloons. Particle astrophysics is directed toward the investigation of galactic, solar, interplanetary, and planetary energetic particles and plasmas. The emphasis is on precision measurements with high resolution in charge, mass, and energy. Gamma ray research is directed toward the investigation of galactic, extragalactic, and solar gamma rays with spectrometers of high angular resolution and moderate energy resolution carried on spacecraft and balloons
Research in particles and fields
Research activities in Cosmic Rays, Gamma Rays, and Astrophysical Plasmas supported under NASA Grant NGR 05-002-160 are discussed. The report is divided into sections which describe the activities, followed by a bibliography. This group's research program is directed toward the investigation of the astrophysical aspects of cosmic rays and gamma rays and of the radiation and electromagnetic field environment of the Earth and other planets. These investigations are carried out by means of energetic particle and photon detector systems flown on spacecraft and balloons

Nonlocal symmetries of Riccati and Abel chains and their similarity reductions
We study nonlocal symmetries and their similarity reductions of Riccati and
Abel chains. Our results show that all the equations in Riccati chain share the
same form of nonlocal symmetry. The similarity reduced order ordinary
differential equation (ODE), , in this chain yields
order ODE in the same chain. All the equations in the Abel chain also share the
same form of nonlocal symmetry (which is different from the one that exist in
Riccati chain) but the similarity reduced order ODE, , in
the Abel chain always ends at the order ODE in the Riccati chain.
We describe the method of finding general solution of all the equations that
appear in these chains from the nonlocal symmetry.Comment: Accepted for publication in J. Math. Phy
Superconducting String Texture
We present a detailed analytical and numerical study of a novel type of
static, superconducting, classically stable string texture in a renormalizable
topologically trivial massive U(1) gauge model with one charged and one neutral
scalar. An upper bound on the mass of the charged scalar as well as on the
current that the string can carry are established. A preliminary unsuccesful
search for stable solutions corresponding to large superconducting loops is
also reported.Comment: RevTex, 14 pages, 8 figure
