Like nearly all of the current subjects of instruction at the College of William and Mary, Biology naturally traces back into departments under other names. Meager as must have been the teaching during the early years in any of the fields specifically mentioned in the Charter granted in 1693 by the British sovereigns, certainly some matter within our :present field was contemplated in the listing of objects mentioned in the preamble of the Charter: ... to the end ... that the youth may be piously educated in good letters and manners .. . to make, found and establish a certain place of universal study, or perpetual College of Divinity, Philosophy, Languages and other good Arts and Sciences ..

Neonatal growth of Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) pups in Alaska

The growth rate of Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) pups was studied in southeast Alaska, the Gulf of Alaska, and the Aleutian Islands during the first six weeks after birth. The Steller sea lion population is currently stable in southeast Alaska but is declining in the Aleutian Islands and parts of the Gulf of Alaska. Male pups (22.6 kg [±2.21 SD]) were significantly heavier than female pups (19.6 kg [±1.80 SD]) at 1−5 days of age, but there were no significant differences among rookeries. Male and female pups grew (in mass, standard length, and axillary girth) at the same rate. Body mass and standard length increased at a faster rate for pups in the Aleutian Islands and the western Gulf of Alaska (0.45−0.48 kg/day and 0.47−0.53 cm/day, respectively) than in southeast Alaska (0.23 kg/day and 0.20 cm/day). Additionally, axillary girth increased at a faster rate for pups in the Aleutian Islands (0.59 cm/ day) than for pups in southeast Alaska v(0.25 cm/day). Our results indicate a greater maternal investment in male pups during gestation, but not during early lactation. Although differences in pup growth rate occurred among rookeries, there was no evidence that female sea lions and their pups were nutritionally stressed in the area of population declin

The connective K-theory of the Eilenberg-MacLane space K(Z/p,2)

We compute ku^*(K(Z/p,2)) and ku_*(K(Z/p,2)), the connective KU-cohomology and connective KU-homology groups of the mod-p Eilenberg-MacLane space K(Z/p,2), using the Adams spectral sequence. We obtain a striking interaction between h_0-extensions and exotic extensions. The mod-p connective KU-cohomology groups, computed elsewhere, are needed in order to establish higher differentials and exotic extensions in the integral groups

The connective Morava K-theory of the second mod p Eilenberg-MacLane space

We develop tools for computing the connective n-th Morava K-theory of spaces. Starting with a Universal Coefficient Theorem that computes the cohomology version from the homology version, we show that every step in the process of computing one is mirrored in the other and that this can be used to make computations. As our example, we compute the connective n-th Morava K-theory of the second mod p Eilenberg-MacLane space.Comment: minor change of title and one sentence adde

A bioprinted cardiac patch composed of cardiac-specific extracellular matrix and progenitor cells for heart repair

Congenital heart defects are present in 8 of 1000 newborns and palliative surgical therapy has increased survival. Despite improved outcomes, many children develop reduced cardiac function and heart failure requiring transplantation. Human cardiac progenitor cell (hCPC) therapy has potential to repair the pediatric myocardium through release of reparative factors, but therapy suffers from limited hCPC retention and functionality. Decellularized cardiac extracellular matrix hydrogel (cECM) improves heart function in animals, and human trials are ongoing. In the present study, a 3D-bioprinted patch containing cECM for delivery of pediatric hCPCs is developed. Cardiac patches are printed with bioinks composed of cECM, hCPCs, and gelatin methacrylate (GelMA). GelMA-cECM bioinks print uniformly with a homogeneous distribution of cECM and hCPCs. hCPCs maintain >75% viability and incorporation of cECM within patches results in a 30-fold increase in cardiogenic gene expression of hCPCs compared to hCPCs grown in pure GelMA patches. Conditioned media from GelMA-cECM patches show increased angiogenic potential (>2-fold) over GelMA alone, as seen by improved endothelial cell tube formation. Finally, patches are retained on rat hearts and show vascularization over 14 d in vivo. This work shows the successful bioprinting and implementation of cECM-hCPC patches for potential use in repairing damaged myocardium
