How effective is harassment on infalling late-type dwarfs?
A new harassment model is presented that models the complex, and dynamical
tidal field of a Virgo like galaxy cluster. The model is applied to small,
late-type dwarf disc galaxies (of substantially lower mass than in previous
harassment simulations) as they infall into the cluster from the outskirts.
These dwarf galaxies are only mildly affected by high speed tidal encounters
with little or no observable consequences; typical stellar losses are ,
producing very low surface brightness streams ( mag arcsec),
and a factor of two drop in dynamical mass-to-light ratio. Final stellar discs
remain disc-like, and dominated by rotation although often with tidally induced
spiral structure. By means of Monte-Carlo simulations, the statistically likely
influences of harassment on infalling dwarf galaxies are determined. The
effects of harassment are found to be highly dependent on the orbit of the
galaxy within the cluster, such that newly accreted dwarf galaxies typically
suffer only mild harassment. Strong tidal encounters, that can morphologically
transform discs into spheroidals, are rare occurring in of dwarf
galaxy infalls for typical orbits of sub-structure within CDM cluster
mass halos. For orbits with small apocentric distances (250 kpc), harassment
is significantly stronger resulting in complete disruption or heavy mass loss
( dark matter and stellar), however, such orbits are expected
to be highly improbable for newly infalling galaxies due to the deep potential

Raman spectra of GexAsySe1−x−y glasses
Various Ge–As–Se glasses spanning a mean coordination number (MCN) from 2.2 to 2.94 have been investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and Raman spectroscopy. The glass transition temperature Tg was found to increase with increasing MCN, except for those glasses located within the nanoscale phase-separated region of the phase diagram. The evolution of Raman features at wavenumbers from 150 to 350 cm⁻¹ exhibits two transitionlike features. Merging of the 225 and 250 cm⁻¹ modes at MCN=2.5 is a symbol of the extinction of Se–Se bonds. Additionally, the appearance of two modes at 280–290 and 170 cm⁻¹ at MCN>2.7 come from the defect modes of ethanelike Ge₂Se₆/₂. The increase in the scattering from these defects is an important factor leading to enhanced optical loss in the glasses with high MCN.This research was partly supported by the Australian

Experimental techniques for ductile damage characterisation
Ductile damage in metallic materials is caused by the nucleation, growth and coalesce of voids and micro-cracks in the metal matrix when it is subjected to plastic strain. A considerable number of models have been proposed to represent ductile failure focusing on the ultimate failure conditions; however, only some of them study in detail the whole damage accumulation process. The aim of this work is to review experimental techniques developed by various authors to measure the accumulation of ductile damage under tensile loads. The measurement methods reviewed include: stiffness degradation, indentation, microstructure analysis, ultrasonic waves propagation, X-ray tomography and electrical potential drop. Stiffness degradation and indentation techniques have been tested on stainless steel 304L hourglass-shaped samples. A special interest is placed in the Continuum Damage Mechanics approach (CDM) as its equations incorporate macroscopic parameters that can represent directly the damage accumulation measured in the experiments. The other main objective lies in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of each technique for the assessment of materials subjected to different strain-rate and temperature conditions
The Low Surface Brightness Extent of the Fornax Cluster
We have used a large format CCD camera to survey the nearby Fornax cluster
and its immediate environment for low luminosity low surface brightness
galaxies. Recent observations indicate that these are the most dark matter
dominated galaxies known and so they are likely to be a good tracer of the dark
matter in clusters. We have identified large numbers of these galaxies
consistent with a steep faint end slope of the luminosity function (alpha~ -2)
down to MB ~ -12. These galaxies contribute almost the same amount to the total
cluster light as the brighter galaxies and they have a spatial extent that is
some four times larger. They satisfy two of the important predictions of N-body
hierarchical simulations of structure formation using dark halos. The
luminosity (mass ?) function is steep and the mass distribution is more
extended than that defined by the brighter galaxies. We also find a large
concentration of low surface brightness galaxies around the nearby galaxy

Structure of Supergiant Shells in the Large Magellanic Cloud
Nine supergiant shells (SGSs) have been identified in the Large Magellanic
Cloud (LMC) based on H-alpha images, and twenty-three SGSs have been reported
based on HI 21-cm line observations, but these sets do not always identify the
same structures. We have examined the physical structure of the optically
identified SGSs using HI channel maps and P-V diagrams to analyze the gas
kinematics. There is good evidence for seven of the nine optically identified
SGSs to be true shells. Of these seven H-alpha SGSs, four are the ionized inner
walls of HI SGSs, while three are an ionized portion of a larger and more
complex HI structure. All of the H-alpha SGSs are identified as such because
they have OB associations along the periphery or in the center, with younger OB
associations more often found along the periphery. After roughly 12 Myrs, if no
new OB associations have been formed a SGS will cease to be identifiable at
visible wavelengths. Thus, the presence and location of ionizing sources is the
main distinction between shells seen only in HI and those also seen in H-alpha.
Based on our analysis, H-alpha observations alone cannot unambiguously identify

Noninvasive Assessment of Preclinical Atherosclerosis
Initially considered as a semipermeable barrier separating lumen from vessel wall, the endothelium is now recognised as a complex endocrine organ responsible for a variety of physiological processes vital for vascular homeostasis. These include the regulation of vascular tone, luminal diameter, and blood flow; hemostasis and thrombolysis; platelet and leucocyte vessel-wall interactions; the regulation of vascular permeability; and tissue growth and remodelling. The endothelium modulates arterial stiffness, which precedes overt atherosclerosis and is an independent predictor of cardiovascular events. Unsurprisingly, dysfunction of the endothelium may be considered as an early and potentially reversible step in the process of atherogenesis and numerous methods have been developed to assess endothelial status and large artery stiffness. Methodology includes flow-mediated dilatation of the brachial artery, assessment of coronary flow reserve, carotid intimamedia thickness, pulse wave analysis, pulse wave velocity, and plethysmography. Renormalized Vacuum Polarization and Stress Tensor on the Horizon of a Schwarzschild Black Hole Threaded by a Cosmic String
We calculate the renormalized vacuum polarization and stress tensor for a
massless, arbitrarily coupled scalar field in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state
on the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole threaded by an infinte straight
cosmic string. This calculation relies on a generalized Heine identity for
non-integer Legendre functions which we derive without using specific
properties of the Legendre functions themselves.Comment: This is an expanded version of a previous submission, we have added

Euclidean thermal spinor Green's function in the spacetime of a straight cosmic string
Within the framework of the quantum field theory at finite temperature on a
conical space, we determine the Euclidean thermal spinor Green's function for a
massless spinor field. We then calculate the thermal average of the
energy-momentum tensor of a thermal bath of massless fermions. In the
high-temperature limit, we find that the straight cosmic string does not

Judgements of Solomon: anxieties and defences of social workers involved in care proceedings
Evidence from focus group discussions with social workers in child care and child protection was collected for a research project exploring decision-making in care proceedings and seeking a better understanding of the causes of delay in the process. Here this material is used to examine social workers’ feelings about their work and to explore the anxieties they expressed. Isabel Menzies’s work on containing anxiety in institutions is used to provide a conceptual framework for thinking about the ways in which individuals’ unconscious defences against anxiety may affect the structure, policies and practices of the organization in which they work. It is suggested that this dimension needs to be taken into account in understanding difficulties which arise in putting policy into practice
