Tips From The Autism Trenches
As a lawyer for special needs and a parent of a college student on the spectrum, Marc will shape his workshop to the needs and interests of the particular group. His messages are specially tailored to focus on autism-related issues, and will cover various topics that parents, educators, and professionals should know about, including insurance issues, grants, IEPs, ABA, transitions to adulthood, and so on. He plans to be joined by his son, a college student and self-advocate
Worsening of cerebral hyperemia by the administration of terlipressin in acute liver failure with severe hepatic encephalopathy
There is increasing evidence that terlipressin is useful in patients with cirrhosis and
hepatorenal syndrome, but there are no data of its use in patients with acute liver
failure (ALF) in whom hepatorenal syndrome is common. Although terlipressin
produces systemic vasoconstriction, it produces cerebral vasodilatation and may
increase cerebral blood flow (CBF). Increased CBF contributes to intracranial
hypertension in patients with ALF. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of
terlipressin in patients with ALF with respect to cerebral haemodynamics. Six
successive patients with ALF were electively ventilated for grade IV hepatic
encephalopathy. Patients were monitored invasively and CBF was measured (Kety-
Schmidt technique). Measurements were made before, at 1, 3 hour and 5 hours after
intravenous (single bolus) administration of terlipressin (0.005 mg/kg) )intravenously
(single bolus), median 0.25mg (range 0.2-0.3). There was no significant change in
heart rate, mean arterial pressure or cardiac output. CBF and jugular venous oxygen
saturation both increased significantly at 1 hour (p<0.0=0.016) respectively.
Intracranial pressure increased significantly at 21 hours (p<0=.0.031), returning back
to baseline values at 42 hours. This study shows that administration of terlipressin, at
a dose that did not alter systemic haemodynamicshemodynamics, resulted in
worsening of cerebral hyperemia and intracranial hypertension in patients with ALF
and severe hepatic encephalopathy. These data suggest the need to exercise extreme
caution in the use of terlipressin in these patients in view of its potentially deleterious
consequences on cerebral haemodynamics
A hierarchical mesh refinement technique for global 3-D spherical mantle convection modelling
A method for incorporating multi-resolution capabilities within pre-existing global 3-D spherical mantle convection codes is presented. The method, which we term "geometric multigrid refinement", is based upon the application of a multigrid solver on non
“Attached” or “Unattached”: With Whom do Men and Women Prefer to Mate, and Why?
A mate poacher is an individual who has sexual relations with someone whom the poacher knows is already in a nominally exclusive, long-term relationship. This article reviews research in which participants were asked to rate the likelihood that benefits and costs exclusively associated with poaching would motivate them to attract, respectively, an attached or an unattached individual, assuming that the potential mates are equally attractive. The results indicated that for men and women to be motivated to poach, the attached individual must be perceived as being more attractive than the unattached individual. Discussion suggests that mate poaching may sometimes be pursued as an alternative to coercive mating strategies, by individuals who are unable to secure unattached mates of acceptable attractiveness. We further hypothesize that individuals may pursue a hierarchy of conditional mating strategies from attracting unattached individuals, through poaching, to coercion. Additional findings of sex differences in perceptions of benefits and costs exclusive to poaching also are discussed
Random walk on disordered networks
Random walks are studied on disordered cellular networks in 2-and
3-dimensional spaces with arbitrary curvature. The coefficients of the
evolution equation are calculated in term of the structural properties of the
cellular system. The effects of disorder and space-curvature on the diffusion
phenomena are investigated. In disordered systems the mean square displacement
displays an enhancement at short time and a lowering at long ones, with respect
to the ordered case. The asymptotic expression for the diffusion equation on
hyperbolic cellular systems relates random walk on curved lattices to
hyperbolic Brownian motion.Comment: 10 Pages, 3 Postscript figure
