    Isolation of pigment cell specific genes in the sea urchin embryo by differential macroarray screening

    New secondary mesenchyme specific genes, expressed exclusively in pigment cells, were isolated from sea urchin embryos using a differential screening of a macroarray cDNA library. The comparison was performed between mRNA populations of embryos having an expansion of the endo-mesodermal territory and embryos blocked in secondary mesenchyme specification. To be able to isolate transcripts with a prevalence down to five copies per cell, a subtractive hybridization procedure was employed. About 400 putative positive clones were identified and sequenced from the 5' end. Gene expression analysis was carried out on a subset of 66 clones with real time quantitative PCR and 40 clones were positive. This group of clones contained sequences highly similar to: the transcription factor glial cells missing (gcm); the polyketide synthase gene cluster (pks-gc); three different members of the flavin-containing monooxygenase gene family (fmo); and a sulfotransferase gene (sult). Using whole mount in situ hybridization, it was shown that these genes are specifically expressed in pigment cells. A functional analysis of the S. purpuratus pks and of one S. purpuratus fmo was carried out using antisense technology and it was shown that their expression is necessary for the biosynthesis of the sea urchin pigment echinochrome. The results suggest that S. purpuratus pks, fmo and sult could belong to a differentiation gene battery of pigment cells

    Heteroduplex analysis of the RNA of clone 3 Moloney murine sarcoma virus

    Heteroduplex analysis of the RNA isolated from purified virions of clone 3 Moloney murine sarcoma virus (M-MSV) hybridized to cDNA's from Moloney murine leukemia virus (M-MLV) and clone 124 M-MSV shows that the main physical component of clone 3 RNA is missing all or most of the 1.5-kilobase (kb) clone 124 M-MSV specific sequence denoted beta s (S. Hu et al. Cell 10:469-477, 1977). This sequence is either deleted in clone 3 RNA or substituted by a very short (0.3-kilobase) sequence. In other respects, clone 3 and clone 124 RNAs show the same heteroduplex structure relative to M-MLV. Since beta s is believed to contain the src gene(s) of clone 124 RNA, this result leaves as an unresolved question the nature of the src gene(s) of the clone 3 M-MSV RNA complex

    Efficient computation of matched solutions of the Kapchinskij-Vladimirskij envelope equations for periodic focusing lattices

    A new iterative method is developed to numerically calculate the periodic, matched beam envelope solution of the coupled Kapchinskij-Vladimirskij (KV) equations describing the transverse evolution of a beam in a periodic, linear focusing lattice of arbitrary complexity. Implementation of the method is straightforward. It is highly convergent and can be applied to all usual parameterizations of the matched envelope solutions. The method is applicable to all classes of linear focusing lattices without skew couplings, and also applies to all physically achievable system parameters -- including where the matched beam envelope is strongly unstable. Example applications are presented for periodic solenoidal and quadrupole focusing lattices.     A university clinic: an innovative model for improving clinical practice

    Objective: This paper discusses interprofessional learning through interdisciplinary collaboration between undergraduate nursing and podiatry students at a university based cardiovascular screening clinic. Setting: A cardiovascular risk assessment clinic at a university campus in rural New South Wales, Australia. Subjects: Students from nursing and podiatry enrolled in a baccalaureate degree at Charles Sturt University (CSU) Albury Wodonga Campus. Main Outcome Measures: Undergraduate health care students develop their clinical skills primarily through clinical rotation within accredited health care facilities. The value of these clinical placements to students is dependent upon availability, the quality of the facilitation and the perceived burden to the organisation of providing places for students. There is increasing competition for these clinical places with health care service managers and their staff frequently highly stressed due to increased demand for clinical services, workforce shortages and increasing fiscal constraints. As a consequence of these challenges, an innovative, interdisciplinary program, designed to both improve and extend the repertoire of clinical skills of undergraduate health care students was piloted at a regional university campus. The pilot program used an established community screening clinic conducted by CSU. Students were invited to attend the clinic and undertake assessment tasks relevant to their profession and curriculum requirements as well as learn and practice clinical skills outside their usual professional practice. Students were able to practise these skills in a supportive environment, without the inherent time constraints and pressures experienced in health care facilities. The effectiveness of this model was evaluated through interviews as well as a pre and post test evaluation of one clinical skill. Students reported enthusiasm towards the program and were particularly interested in the opportunity of working in an interprofessional community focussed context and having the opportunity to expand their scope of practice

    Custodial SO(4) symmetry and CP violation in N-Higgs-doublet potentials

    We study the implementation of global SO(4)SU(2)LSU(2)RSO(4)\sim SU(2)_L\otimes SU(2)_R symmetry in general potentials with N-Higgs-doublets in order to obtain models with custodial SO(3)CSO(3)_C symmetry. We conclude that any implementation of the custodial SO(4) symmetry is equivalent, by a basis transformation, to a canonical one if SU(2)LSU(2)_L is the gauge factor, U(1)YU(1)_Y is embedded in SU(2)RSU(2)_R and we require NN copies of the doublet representation of SU(2)RSU(2)_R. The invariance by SO(4) automatically leads to a CP invariant potential and the basis of the canonical implementation of SO(4) is aligned to a basis where CP-symmetry acts in the standard fashion. We show different but equivalent implementations for the 2HDM, including an implementation not previously considered.Comment: 22pp, REVTeX4. Published versio

    Unitary ambiguity in the extraction of the E2/M1 ratio for the γNΔ\gamma N\leftrightarrow\Delta transition

    The resonant electric quadrupole amplitude in the transition γNΔ(1232)\gamma N\leftrightarrow\Delta(1232) is of great interest for the understanding of baryon structure. Various dynamical models have been developed to extract it from the corresponding photoproduction multipole of pions on nucleons. It is shown that once such a model is specified, a whole class of unitarily equivalent models can be constructed, all of them providing exactly the same fit to the experimental data. However, they may predict quite different resonant amplitudes. Therefore, the extraction of the E2/M1(γNΔ\gamma N\leftrightarrow\Delta) ratio (bare or dressed) which is based on a dynamical model using a largely phenomenological πN\pi N interaction is not unique.Comment: 10 pages revtex including 4 postscript figure

    Shell to shell energy transfer in MHD, Part I: steady state turbulence

    We investigate the transfer of energy from large scales to small scales in fully developed forced three-dimensional MHD-turbulence by analyzing the results of direct numerical simulations in the absence of an externally imposed uniform magnetic field. Our results show that the transfer of kinetic energy from the large scales to kinetic energy at smaller scales, and the transfer of magnetic energy from the large scales to magnetic energy at smaller scales, are local, as is also found in the case of neutral fluids, and in a way that is compatible with Kolmogorov (1941) theory of turbulence. However, the transfer of energy from the velocity field to the magnetic field is a highly non-local process in Fourier space. Energy from the velocity field at large scales can be transfered directly into small scale magnetic fields without the participation of intermediate scales. Some implications of our results to MHD turbulence modeling are also discussed.Comment: Submitted to PR

    On the extraction of electromagnetic properties of the Delta(1232) excitation from pion photoproduction

    Several methods for the treatment of pion photoproduction in the region of the Delta(1232) resonance are discussed, in particular the effective Lagrangian approach and the speed plot analysis are compared to a dynamical treatment. As a main topic, we discuss the extraction of the genuine resonance parts of the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole multipoles of the electromagnetic excitation of the resonance. To this end, we try to relate the various values for the ratio R_{EM} of the E2 to M1 multipole excitation strengths for the Delta(1232) resonance as extracted by the different methods to corresponding ratios of a dynamical model. Moreover, it is confirmed that all methods for extracting resonance properties suffer from an unitary ambiguity which is due to some phenomenological contributions entering the models.Comment: 22 pages revtex including 7 postscript figure
