Agricultural engineering
Believing that the study of Agricultural Engineering should fill an important place in the training of the young man who would make farming the object of his life\u27s work, the author has attempted to furnish in this volume an aid in supplying this part of his training. The application of agricultural engineering methods to agriculture should not only raise the efficiency of the farm worker but should also provide for hlm a more comfortable and healthful home. This volume has been written primarily as a text for secondary schools of agriculture, and for colleges where only a generaf course can be offered.
Claim is not made for much new material concerning the subjects discussed; but rather an attempt has ·been made to place under one cover a general discussion of agricultural engineering subjects which hitherto could not be secured except in several volumes and hence impractical for text-book purposes.https://lib.dr.iastate.edu/abe_eng_books/1001/thumbnail.jp
The design and construction of masonry water supply tanks
The elevated storage tank or reservoir offers advantages because it provides a reserve supply of water which is quickly available and also because it is adapted to intermittent windmill pumping. Farm fires constitute a serious economic problem, and the losses therefrom may be reduced with adequate water supply on the farm.
The masonry silo provides a desirable support for an elevated water supply tank.
Masonry tanks will, if properly designed and carefully constructed, give long and satisfactory service.
Block tanks must be lined with a waterproofing material which is plastic and of sufficient thickness to remain intact, notwithstanding expansion and contraction of the walls.
Considering low winter temperatures in Iowa, exposed tanks and supply pipes leading to them should be well insulated
Life, service and the cost of service of farm machines on 400 Iowa farms
That farmers of Iowa make an extensive use of farm machines is indicated by the 16th Census of the United States which gives the value of farm implements and machinery on Iowa farms, April 1, 1940, as 1,134 for each Iowa farm. Under these circumstances it is recognized that the use of farm machines occupies an important role in the agricultural practices of the state. Farm machines not only give the farm workers control over large units of power, thus making possible large individual productive capacity, but they also make farm labor less arduous. For these reasons the cost of farm-machine service or use as discussed in this bulletin should be of general interest
