    This paper considers the conditions that are necessary for market discipline to complement prompt corrective action (PCA) by the authorities in handling problem banks. We initially consider precisely what market discipline means in this context, who exercises it and the preconditions that are necessary for it to operate effectively. We explore the incentives that are necessary for PCA and market discipline to reinforce rather than cancel each other and in particular consider the limits to market discipline in this context from corporate governance and from difficulties in valuation.     On October 24, 2003, SUERF celebrated its 40th anniversary in the Galerie Dorée of the Banque de France with an especially high level and rich seminar. The memorable occasion was further elevated by Jean Claude Trichet giving the tenth SUERF Annual Lecture in his last public speech as Governor of the Banque de France, prior to taking over as President of the European Central Bank. This study brings together in slightly edited form the four papers presented at the seminar and the Annual Lecture.

Methods: Prospective observational study of bacteremic and nasal colonizing S.aureus isolates between June 2006 to June 2010. All isolates underwent single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping and testing for the presence of the Panton-Valentine Leucocidin (pvl) gene. Results: Invasive isolates (n = 97) were predominantly ST93 (26.6 %) and pvl positive (54.3 %), which was associated with skin and soft tissue infections (OR 4.35, 95 % CI 1.16, 16.31). Non-multiresistant MRSA accounted for 31.9 % of bacteremic samples and showed a trend to being healthcare associated (OR 2.16, 95 % CI 0.86, 5.40). Non-invasive isolates (n = 54) were rarely ST93 (1.9 %) or pvl positive (7.4 %). Conclusions: In Central Australia, ST93 was the dominant S.aureus clone, and was frequently pvl positive and associated with an aggressive clinical phenotype. Whether non-nasal carriage is more important with invasive clones or whether colonization occurs only transiently remains to be elucidated

    Low levels of nucleotide diversity in Crocodylus moreletii and evidence of hybridization with C. acutus

    Examinations of both population genetic structure and the processes that lead to such structure in crocodilians have been initiated in several species in response to a call by the IUCN Crocodile Specialist Group. A recent study used microsatellite markers to characterize Morelet\u27s crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii) populations in north-central Belize and presented evidence for isolation by distance. To further investigate this hypothesis, we sequenced a portion of the mitochondrial control region for representative animals after including samples from additional locales in Belize, Guatemala and Mexico. While there is limited evidence of subdivision involving other locales, we found that most of the differentiation among populations of C. moreletii can be attributed to animals collected from a single locale in Belize, Banana Bank Lagoon. Furthermore, mitochondrial DNA sequence analysis showed that animals from this and certain other locales display a haplotype characteristic of the American crocodile, C. acutus, rather than C. moreletii. We interpret this as evidence of hybridization between the two species and comment on how these new data have influenced our interpretation of previous findings. We also find very low levels of nucleotide diversity in C. moreletii haplotypes and provide evidence for a low rate of substitution in the crocodilian mitochondrial control region. Finally, the conservation implications of these findings are discussed

    Supersymmetric Electroweak Renormalization of the Z-Width in the MSSM (I)

    Within the framework of the MSSM, we compute the complete set of electroweak one-loop supersymmetric quantum effects on the width ΓZ\Gamma_Z of the ZZ-boson in the on-shell renormalization scheme. Numerical analyses of the corrections to the various partial widths into leptons and quarks are presented. On general grounds, the average size of the electroweak SUSY corrections to ΓZ\Gamma_Z may well saturate the level of the present theoretical uncertainties, even if considering the full supersymmetric spectrum lying in the neighbourhood of the unaccessible LEP 200 range. Remarkably enough, for the present values of the top quark mass, the electroweak SUSY effects could be, globally, very close or even bigger than the electroweak SM corrections, but opposite in sign. Therefore, in the absence of theoretical errors, there are large regions of parameter space where one could find that, effectively, the electroweak SM corrections are ``missing'', or even having the ``wrong'' sign. This should be helpful in discriminating between the SM and the MSSM. However, an accurate prediction of the electroweak quantum effects on ΓZ\Gamma_Z will only be possible, if Δr\Delta r and αs\alpha_s are pinned down in the future with enough precision.Comment: 17 p. in LaTeX.
