    Time Scale Modification of Music using a Subband Approach Based on the Bark Scale

    Time-domain time-scaling algorithms are efficient in comparison to their frequency-domain counterparts, but they rely upon the existence of a quasi-periodic signal to produce a high quality output. This requirement makes them unsuitable for use on multi-pitched signals such as polyphonic music. However, time-domain techniques applied on a subband basis can resolve the multi-pitch problem. The authors propose an improved subband implementation based upon the bark scale for the time scale modification of music. The new subband approach is supported by psychoacoustic and music theory and subjectively through informal listening tests

    MYEOV (myeloma overexpressed gene) drives colon cancer cell migration and is regulated by PGE2

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>We have previously reported that Myeov (MYEloma OVerexpressed gene) expression is enhanced in colorectal cancer (CRC) and that it promotes CRC cell proliferation and invasion. The role of Myeov in CRC migration is unclear. ProstaglandinE2 (PGE <sub>2</sub>) is a known factor in promoting CRC carcinogenesis. The role of PGE <sub>2 </sub>in modulating Myeov expression has also not been defined.</p> <p>Aim</p> <p>To assess the role of Myeov expression in CRC cell migration and to evaluate the role of PGE <sub>2 </sub>in Myeov bioactivity.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>siRNA mediated Myeov knockdown was achieved in T84 CRC cells. Knockdown was assessed using quantitative real time PCR. The effect of knockdown on CRC cell migration was assessed using a scratch wound healing assay. Separately, T84 cells were treated with PGE <sub>2 </sub>(0.00025 μ M, 0.1 μ M and 1 μ M) from 30 min to 3 hours and the effect on Myeov gene expression was assessed using real time PCR.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Myeov knockdown resulted in a significant reduction in CRC cell migration, observable as early as 12 hours (P < 0.05) with a 39% reduction compared to control at 36 hours (p < 0.01). Myeov expression was enhanced after treatment with PGE <sub>2</sub>, with the greatest effect seen at 60 mins for all 3 PGE <sub>2 </sub>doses. This response was dose dependent with a 290%, 550% & 1,000% increase in Myeov expression for 0.00025 μ M, 0.1 μ M and 1 μ M PGE <sub>2 </sub>respectively.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In addition to promoting CRC proliferation and invasion, our findings indicate that Myeov stimulates CRC cell migration, and its expression may be PGE <sub>2 </sub>dependant.</p

    An Efficient Phasiness Reduction Technique for Moderate Audio Time-scale Modification

    Phase vocoder approaches to timescale modification of audio introduce a reverberant/phasy artifact into the time-scaled output due to a loss in phase coherence between short-time Fourier transform (STFT) bins. Recent improvements to the phase vocoder have reduced the presence of this artifact, however, it remains a problem. A method of time-scaling is presented that results in a further reduction in phasiness, for moderate timescale factors, by taking advantage of some flexibility that exists in the choice of phase required so as to maintain horizontal phase coherence between related STFT bins. Furthermore, the approach leads to a reduction in computational load within the range of time-scaling factors for which phasi-ness is reduced

    Obstetrician-assessed maternal health at pregnancy predicts offspring future health

    Background: We aimed to examine the association between obstetrician assessment of maternal physical health at the time of pregnancy and offspring cardiovascular disease risk.&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt; Methods and Principal Findings: We examined this association in a birth cohort of 11,106 individuals, with 245,000 person years of follow-up. We were concerned that any associations might be explained by residual confounding, particularly by family socioeconomic position. In order to explore this we used multivariable regression models in which we adjusted for a range of indicators of socioeconomic position and we explored the specificity of the association. Specificity of association was explored by examining associations with other health related outcomes. Maternal physical health was associated with cardiovascular disease: adjusted (socioeconomic position, complications of pregnancy, birthweight and childhood growth at mean age 5) hazard ratio comparing those described as having poor or very poor health at the time of pregnancy to those with good or very good health was 1.55 (95%CI: 1.05, 2.28) for coronary heart disease, 1.91 (95%CI: 0.99, 3.67) for stroke and 1.57 (95%CI: 1.13, 2.18) for either coronary heart disease or stroke. However, this association was not specific. There were strong associations for other outcomes that are known to be related to socioeconomic position (3.61 (95%CI: 1.04, 12.55) for lung cancer and 1.28 (95%CI:1.03, 1.58) for unintentional injury), but not for breast cancer (1.10 (95%CI:0.48, 2.53)).&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt; Conclusions and Significance: These findings demonstrate that a simple assessment of physical health (based on the appearance of eyes, skin, hair and teeth) of mothers at the time of pregnancy is a strong indicator of the future health risk of their offspring for common conditions that are associated with poor socioeconomic position and unhealthy behaviours. They do not support a specific biological link between maternal health across her life course and future risk of cardiovascular disease in her offspring.&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt

    Trends in Project Management 1966 – 2015

    This study charts the trends and changing emphases in project management in the last 50 years. A quantitative, positivistic study, using frequency analysis and 116,202 records from online databases, this paper uses a priori categories to search for project management keywords in the period 1966 to 2015. The key findings were that the categories of project management methods, project success and stakeholder management were likely to see an increase as the topics for publications but that the remaining 13 categories were expected to feature in fewer publications in alignment with the reduction in project management publications generally. The paper provides data on citations in project management publications and lists the 30 most cited authors in project management. It is intended that this paper will be of benefit to those studying project management, to academics who work in this sphere and to others interested in this subject area
