    Beauty and the Beast: Physical Appearance Discrimination in American Criminal Trials Comment.

    This Comment considers physical appearance discrimination by jurors in criminal trials. It proposes remedial measures to eliminate discrimination and effectuate the underlying purposes of jury trials. Part II of this Comment examines the psychological process of corporeal attribution and discusses the underlying philosophic dichotomy of image and substance. It surveys the role modern American culture plays in discrimination in the American criminal law system and discusses parallel relationships between race, sex, and physical appearance discrimination. Part IV explores constitutional ramifications of fostering and promoting physical appearance discrimination in criminal trials. Finally, Part V presents remedies designed to ensure criminal defendants are judged based on their alleged actions rather than physical appearance. Recent research in social psychology confirms jurors are not impartial, they make substantive value judgments based on physical appearance. Although these “gut reactions” to appearance are not wholly inaccurate, they are too arbitrarily conceived to serve as a basis for imprisoning and executing defendants. Juries discriminating based on physical appearance is repugnant to several specific constitutional guarantees and indefensible as a means of enforcing the law. The founding premise of the United States Constitution’s Bill of Rights is to ensure liberty against capricious seizure. Nowhere is the realization of this principle more desperately needed than in the context of society’s decision to imprison or execute another human being. Therefore, our judicial system must reform to prosecute persons based on what they did, rather than what they look like. The judicial system can accomplish this reformation by excluding any evidence of the defendant’s physical appearance from the courtroom, or through the use of proxy defendants. Regardless of the method, the law should act swiftly to ensure defendants are neither imprisoned nor executed based on their physical appearance

    Influence of Stream Location in a Drainage Network on the Index of Biotic Integrity

    The index of biotic integrity (IBI) has become a widely used tool for assessing the condition of stream fish communities and the overall biological status of streams. Because the location of a stream in a drainage network can influence the species richness offish communities and because species richness is an important component of the IBI, we examined the influence of stream spatial location on the IBI. We found that IBI scores for headwater streams in three Illinois drainage basins were significantly lower than those calculated for tributary streams of similar size connecting directly to larger streams. This difference in IBI was related to the increased species richness and to a greater number of sucker and darter species in tributaries that drain into larger, main‐channel streams. Because of the influence of tributary location on the IBI, expected values for headwater tributary streams should be developed independently from those developed for main‐channel tributary streams.     Regulation of blood vessel sprouting

    Blood vessels are essential conduits of nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. The formation of these vessels involves angiogenic sprouting, a complex process entailing highly integrated cell behaviors and signaling pathways. In this review, we discuss how endothelial cells initiate a vessel sprout through interactions with their environment and with one another, particularly through lateral inhibition. We review the composition of the local environment, which contains an initial set of guidance cues to facilitate the proper outward migration of the sprout as it emerges from a parent vessel. The long-range guidance and sprout stability cues provided by soluble molecules, extracellular matrix components, and interactions with other cell types are also discussed. We also examine emerging evidence for mechanisms that govern sprout fusion with its target and lumen formation

    How Blood Vessel Networks Are Made and Measured

    Tissue and organ viability depends on the proper systemic distribution of cells, nutrients, and oxygen through blood vessel networks. These networks arise in part via angiogenic sprouting. Vessel sprouting involves the precise coordination of several endothelial cell processes including cell-cell communication, cell migration, and proliferation. In this review, we discuss zebrafish and mammalian models of blood vessel sprouting and the quantification methods used to assess vessel sprouting and network formation in these models. We also review the mechanisms involved in angiogenic sprouting, and we propose that the process consists of distinct stages. Sprout initiation involves endothelial cell interactions with neighboring cells and the environment to establish a specialized tip cell responsible for leading the emerging sprout. Furthermore, local sprout guidance cues that spatially regulate this outward migration are discussed. We also examine subsequent events, such as sprout fusion and lumenization, that lead to maturation of a nascent sprout into a patent blood vessel

Conservation Science and Practice, (2021): 3:e274, doi: 10.1111/csp2.274.Spatial relationships between predators and prey provide critical information for understanding and predicting climate‐induced shifts in ecosystem dynamics and mitigating human impacts. We used Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary as a case study to investigate spatial overlap among sand lance (Ammodytes dubius), a key forage fish species, and two protected predators: humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) and great shearwaters (Ardenna gravis). We conducted 6 years (2013–2018) of standardized surveys and quantified spatial overlap using the global index of collocation. Results showed strong, consistent collocation among species across seasons and years, suggesting that humpback whales and great shearwater distributions are tightly linked to sand lance. We propose that identifying sand lance habitats may indicate areas where humpbacks and shearwaters aggregate and are particularly vulnerable to human activities.     Smoking Enhances Risk for New External Genital Warts in Men

    Repeat episodes of HPV-related external genital warts reflect recurring or new infections. No study before has been sufficiently powered to delineate how tobacco use, prior history of EGWs and HIV infection affect the risk for new EGWs. Behavioral, laboratory and examination data for 2,835 Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study participants examined at 21,519 semi-annual visits were evaluated. Fourteen percent (391/2835) of men reported or were diagnosed with EGWs at 3% (675/21,519) of study visits. Multivariate analyses showed smoking, prior episodes of EGWs, HIV infection and CD4+ T-lymphocyte count among the infected, each differentially influenced the risk for new EGWs

    Distinct signalling pathways regulate sprouting angiogenesis from the dorsal aorta and the axial vein

    Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels from preexisting vessels, is critical to most physiological processes and many pathological conditions. During zebrafish development, angiogenesis expands the axial vessels into a complex vascular network that is necessary for efficient oxygen delivery. Although the dorsal aorta (DA) and the axial vein (AV) are spatially juxtaposed, the initial angiogenic sprouts from these vessels extend in opposite directions, suggesting that distinct cues may regulate angiogenesis of the axial vessels. In this report, we found that angiogenic sprouts from the DA are dependent on Vegf-A signaling, and do not respond to Bmp signals. In contrast, sprouts from the AV are regulated by Bmp signaling independent of Vegf-A signals, suggesting that Bmp is a vein-specific angiogenic cue during early vascular development. Our results support a paradigm, whereby different signals regulate distinct programs of sprouting angiogenesis from the AV and DA, and suggest that signaling heterogeneity contributes to the complexity of vascular networks
