    Dynamical CP Violation in the Early Universe

    Following earlier ideas of Dolgov, we show that the asymmetrical dynamical evolution of fields in the early Universe provides a new source for CP violation. This can lead to baryogenesis without any additional CP-violating interactions. The magnitude of this CP violation is time-dependent. In particular, it vanishes (or is very small) in the late Universe after the fields have relaxed (or are in their final approach) to their vacuum values.     Ishemia-Reperfusion enhances GAPDH nitration in aging skeletal muscle

    Aging and skeletal muscle ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury leads to decreased contractile force generation that increases severely with age. Our studies show that glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) protein expression is significantly decreased at 3 and 5 days reperfusion in the young mouse muscle and at 1, 3, 5, and 7 days in the aged muscle. Using PCR, we have shown that GAPDH mRNA levels in young and old muscle increase at 5 days reperfusion compared to control, suggesting that the protein deficit is not transcriptional. Furthermore, while total tyrosine nitration did not increase in the young muscle, GAPDH nitration increased significantly at 1 and 3 days reperfusion. In contrast, total tyrosine nitration in aged muscle increased significantly at 1, 3, and 5 days of reperfusion, with increases in GAPDH nitration at the same time points. We conclude that GAPDH protein levels decrease following I/R, that this is not transcriptionally mediated, that the aged muscle experiences greater oxidative stress, protein modification and GAPDH degradation, possibly contributing to decreased muscle function. We propose that tyrosine nitration enhances GAPDH degradation following I/R and that the persistent decrease of GAPDH in aged muscle is due to the prolonged increase in oxidative modification in this age group

    Photolithography Process Characterization and 3D Simulation Using Track-Mounted Development Rate Monitor Data

    A track-mounted, in-situ Dissolution Rate Monitor (DRM) is used to study the impact of exposure variations on g-line, i-line and DUV positive chemically-amplified resists. In the i-line case, a comparative study between constant spray and a spray/puddle process was undertaken. In all cases, modeling parameters were extracted from the track-mounted DRM data and entered into 2D and 3D simulators using an experimentally-generated Development Rate vs. PAC concentration table. Simulated profiles were compared with actual SEM cross-sections. Whenever possible, DRM traces were used to analyze standing waves, surface inhibition effects and quantify resist performance by calculating contrast.     Risk Assessment and Comparative Effectiveness of Left Ventricular Assist Device and Medical Management in Ambulatory Heart Failure Patients The ROADMAP Study 2-Year Results

    OBJECTIVES The authors sought to provide the pre-specified primary endpoint of the ROADMAP (Risk Assessment and Comparative Effectiveness of Left Ventricular Assist Device and Medical Management in Ambulatory Heart Failure Patients) trial at 2 years. BACKGROUND The ROADMAP trial was a prospective nonrandomized observational study of 200 patients (97 with a left ventricular assist device [LVAD], 103 on optimal medical management [OMM]) that showed that survival with improved functional status at 1 year was better with LVADs compared with OMM in a patient population of ambulatory New York Heart Association functional class IIIb/IV patients. METHODS The primary composite endpoint was survival on original therapy with improvement in 6-min walk distance \u3e= 75 m. RESULTS Patients receiving LVAD versus OMM had lower baseline health-related quality of life, reduced Seattle Heart Failure Model 1-year survival (78% vs. 84%; p = 0.012), and were predominantly INTERMACS (Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support) profile 4 (65% vs. 34%; p \u3c 0.001) versus profiles 5 to 7. More LVAD patients met the primary endpoint at 2 years: 30% LVAD versus 12% OMM (odds ratio: 3.2 [95% confidence interval: 1.3 to 7.7]; p = 0.012). Survival as treated on original therapy at 2 years was greater for LVAD versus OMM (70 +/- 5% vs. 41 +/- 5%; p \u3c 0.001), but there was no difference in intent-to-treat survival (70 +/- 5% vs. 63 +/- 5%; p = 0.307). In the OMM arm, 23 of 103 (22%) received delayed LVADs (18 within 12 months; 5 from 12 to 24 months). LVAD adverse events declined after year 1 for bleeding (primarily gastrointestinal) and arrhythmias. CONCLUSIONS Survival on original therapy with improvement in 6-min walk distance was superior with LVAD compared with OMM at 2 years. Reduction in key adverse events beyond 1 year was observed in the LVAD group. The ROADMAP trial provides risk-benefit information to guide patient- and physician-shared decision making for elective LVAD therapy as a treatment for heart failure.     Suboptimal Exposure to Anti-TB Drugs in a TBM/HIV+ Population is not Related to Anti-retroviral Therapy.

    A placebo-controlled trial that compares the outcomes of immediate versus deferred initiation of antiretroviral therapy in HIV+ve Tuberculous Meningitis (TBM) patients was conducted in Vietnam in 2011. Here, the pharmacokinetics of Rifampicin, Isoniazid, Pyrazinamide and Ethambutol were investigated in the presence and absence of anti-HIV treatment in 85 patients. Pharmacokinetic analyses show that HIV therapy has no significant impact upon the pharmacokinetics of TB drugs in this cohort. The same population, however, displayed generally low CSF and systemic exposures to rifampicin compared to previously reported HIV –ve cohorts. Elevated CSF concentrations of pyrazinamide on the other hand were strongly and independently correlated with increased mortality and neurological toxicity. The findings suggest that the current standard dosing regimens may put the patient at risk of treatment failure from suboptimal rifampicin exposure, and potentially increasing the risk of adverse CNS events which are independently correlated with pyrazinamide CSF exposure

    Nuclear and nucleon transitions of the H di-baryon

    We consider 3 types of processes pertinent to the phenomenology of an H di-baryon: conversion of two Λ\Lambda's in a doubly-strange hypernucleus to an H, decay of the H to two baryons, and -- if the H is light enough -- conversion of two nucleons in a nucleus to an H. We compute the spatial wavefunction overlap using the Isgur-Karl and Bethe-Goldstone wavefunctions, and treat the weak interactions phenomenologically. The observation of Λ\Lambda decays from doubly-strange hypernuclei puts a constraint on the H wavefunction which is plausibly satisfied. In this case the H is very long-lived as we calculate. An absolutely stable H is not excluded at present. SuperK can provide valuable limits

    Inhomogeneous vacuum energy

    Vacuum energy remains the simplest model of dark energy which could drive the accelerated expansion of the Universe without necessarily introducing any new degrees of freedom. Inhomogeneous vacuum energy is necessarily interacting in general relativity. Although the four-velocity of vacuum energy is undefined, an interacting vacuum has an energy transfer and the vacuum energy defines a particular foliation of spacetime with spatially homogeneous vacuum energy in cosmological solutions. It is possible to give a consistent description of vacuum dynamics and in particular the relativistic equations of motion for inhomogeneous perturbations given a covariant prescription for the vacuum energy, or equivalently the energy transfer four-vector, and we construct gauge-invariant vacuum perturbations. We show that any dark energy cosmology can be decomposed into an interacting vacuum+matter cosmology whose inhomogeneous perturbations obey simple first-order equations.Comment: 8 pages; v2 clarified discussion of Chaplygin gas model, references adde

    Light Gluino Search for Decays Containing pi+pi- or pi0 from a Neutral Hadron Beam at Fermilab

    We report on two null searches, one for the spontaneous appearance of π+π\pi^+\pi^- pairs, another for a single π0\pi^0, consistent with the decay of a long-lived neutral particle into hadrons and an unseen neutral particle. For the lowest level gluon-gluino bound state, known as the R0R^0, we exclude the decays R0π+πγ~R^0\to \pi^+\pi^-\tilde{\gamma} and R0π0γ~R^0\to \pi^0\tilde{\gamma} for the masses of R0R^0 and γ~\tilde{\gamma} in the theoretically allowed range. In the most interesting R0R^0 mass range, 3GeV/c2\leq 3 GeV/c^2, we exclude R0R^0 lifetimes from 3×10103\times 10^{-10} seconds to as high as 10310^{-3} seconds, assuming perturbative QCD production for the R0R^0.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure
