    Commensurability oscillations due to pinned and drifting orbits in a two-dimensional lateral surface superlattice

    We have simulated conduction in a two-dimensional electron gas subject to a weak two-dimensional periodic potential, Vxcos(2πx/a)+Vycos(2πy/a)V_x \cos(2\pi x/a) + V_y \cos(2\pi y/a). The usual commensurability oscillations in ρxx(B)\rho_{xx}(B) are seen with VxV_x alone. An increase of VyV_y suppresses these oscillations, rather than introducing the additional oscillations in ρyy(B)\rho_{yy}(B) expected from previous perturbation theories. We show that this behavior arises from drift of the guiding center of cyclotron motion along contours of an effective potential.     Criminal Law - Insane Persons - Influence of Mental Illness on the Parole Return Process

    Defendants in the criminal process are divided into rigidly exclusive categories of mental health. The competent to stand trial are first separated from the incompetent. Then the competent are divided on the basis of their mental state at the time of their acts between the sane and the insane. As long as these rigid categories are administered in an adversary trial system, some misdirection of victims of serious mental illness into the penal system is almost inevitable. Even where mental illness might otherwise prevent conviction, those accused of non-capital felonies are not likely to raise the question, and few courts are likely to do so for them. Once such misdirection has taken place at trial, the possible inappropriateness of imprisoning the mentally ill remains largely beyond the reach of legal examination. After conviction there are few occasions which one might call justiciable events when the balanced considerations of criminality and mental illness stand precisely defined for flexible, dispassionate examination. The questions which might be asked are obscured in the vague penumbra of post-conviction due process, and the issues are further blurred by the fact that present prisons and mental hospitals both tend to be thought of as primarily custodial. Hence, mentally ill convicts generally percolate through the penal system and eventually become eligible for parole. At that stage, their mental illnesses may not be recognized or, if recognized, not thought to present an unreasonable risk under a liberal parole policy. Many such convicts are therefore granted parole. Thus the criminal process thrusts upon parole administrators the problem of handling these victims of serious mental illness. This study by a psychiatrist and a law student is based upon the case histories of twelve such parolees with whose mental illness the Michigan parole administration was forced to deal. These case histories are contained in the appendix

    A series of compounds of the N3P3Cl(6-n)(NHBut)n family (where n = 0, 1, 2, 4 and 6) are presented and their molecular parameters are related to trends in physical properties, which provides insight into a potential reaction mechanism for nucleophilic substitution. The crystal structures of N3P3Cl5(NHBut) and N3P3Cl2(NHBut)4 have been determined at 120K and those of N3P3Cl6 and N3P3Cl4(NHBut)2 have been re-determined at 120K. These are compared with the known structure of N3P3(NHBut)6 studied at 150K. Trends in molecular parameters (phosphazene ring, P-Cl & P-N(HBut) distances, PCl2 angles and endo- and exo-cyclic phosphazene ring parameters) across the series are observed. Hydrogen-bonding motifs are identified, characterised and compared. Both the molecular and hydrogen bonding parameters are related to the electron distribution in bonds and the derived basicities of the cyclophosphazene series of compounds. These findings provide evidence for a proposed mechanism for nucleophilic substitution at a phosphorus site bearing a PCl(NHBut) moiety

    Testing universality and the fractional power prescription for the staggered fermion determinant

    In [Phys.Rev.Lett.92:162002 (2004), hep-lat/0312025] expressions for the continuous Euclidean time limits of various lattice fermion determinants were derived and compared in order to test universality expectations in Lattice QCD. Here we review that work with emphasis on its relevance for assessing the fractional power prescription for the determinant in dynamical staggered fermion simulations.     Social Event Detection via sparse multi-modal feature selection and incremental density based clustering

    Combining items from social media streams, such as Flickr photos and Twitter tweets, into meaningful groups can help users contextu- alise and effectively consume the torrents of information now made available on the social web. This task is made challenging due to the scale of the streams and the inherently multimodal nature of the information to be contextualised. We present a methodology which approaches social event detection as a multi-modal clustering task. We address the various challenges of this task: the selection of the features used to compare items to one another; the construction of a single sparse affinity matrix; combining the features; relative importance of features; and clustering techniques which produce meaningful item groups whilst scaling to cluster large numbers of items. In our best tested configuration we achieve an F1 score of 0.94, showing that a good compromise between precision and recall of clusters can be achieved using our technique

    Student perceptions of classroom management practices and policies employed by college educators have not been widely studied.  Faculty have broad discretion to determine classroom management practices and policies, and faculty are generally evaluated at least annually with student evaluations of teaching as a significant component of  the evaluative process.  The focus of this paper is whether students perceive faculty as having the freedom or discretion to adopt specified behaviors or policies unrelated to course content decisions.&nbsp
