How Do Children Become Workers? Making Sense of Conflicting Accounts of Cultural Transmission in Anthropology and Psychology
This article uses children’s work as a lens to examine methodological concerns in the study of cultural transmission and children’s learning of useful domestic and subsistence skills. We begin by providing a review of the relevant literature concerning cultural transmission in the context of the ethnographic record, as well as more recent studies originating largely from psychology. We then offer an ethnographic case study concerning Asabano (PNG [Papua New Guinea]) childhood to make an important methodological contribution in the interdisciplinary study of cultural transmission. The case study centers on the paradox that Asabano parents, in interviews, claim that their children learn almost exclusively via parental teaching. Field observation and the parent’s and children’s spontaneous remarks suggest that this, in fact, does not happen and that children are expected to learn largely on their own with little parental intervention. To account for this paradox, we illustrate the limits of asking in particular cultural contexts like that of the Asabano, as well as the influence of institutions such as schools and churches, which have provided new and influential models of teaching that interlocutors are able to refer to in the context of interviews without necessarily changing their actual practices
CP Violation in Three-Body Chargino Decays
CP violation in supersymmetry can give rise to rate asymmetries in the decays
of supersymmetric particles. In this work we compute the rate asymmetries for
the three-body chargino decays \tilde\chi^\pm_2 \to \tilde\chi^\pm_1 HH,
\tilde\chi^\pm_2 \to \tilde\chi^\pm_1 ZZ, \tilde\chi^\pm_2 \to \tilde\chi^\pm_1
W^+ W^- and \tilde\chi^\pm_2 \to tilde\chi^\pm_1 ZH. Each of the decays
contains contributions mediated by neutral Higgs bosons that can possibly go on
shell. Such contributions receive a resonant enhancement; furthermore, the
strong phases required for the CP asymmetries come from the widths of the
exchanged Higgs bosons. Our results indicate that the rate asymmetries can be
relatively large in some cases, while still respecting a number of important
low-energy bounds such as those coming from B meson observables and electric
dipole moments. For the parameters that we consider, rate asymmetries of order

Lyman-alpha Forest Constraints on the Mass of Warm Dark Matter and the Shape of the Linear Power Spectrum
High resolution N-body simulations of cold dark matter (CDM) models predict
that galaxies and clusters have cuspy halos with excessive substructure.
Observations reveal smooth halos with central density cores. One possible
resolution of this conflict is that the dark matter is warm (WDM); this will
suppress the power spectrum on small scales. The Lyman-alpha forest is a
powerful probe of the linear power spectrum on these scales. We use
collisionless N-body simulations to follow the evolution of structure in WDM
models, and analyze artificial Lyman-alpha forest spectra extracted from them.
By requiring that there is enough small-scale power in the linear power
spectrum to reproduce the observed properties of the Lyman-alpha forest in
quasar spectra, we derive a lower limit to the mass of the WDM particle of 750
eV. This limit is robust to reasonable uncertainties in our assumption about
the temperature of the mean density gas (T0) at z=3. We argue that any model
that suppresses the CDM linear theory power spectrum more severely than a 750

Variation of Galactic Bar Length with Amplitude and Density as Evidence for Bar Growth over a Hubble Time
K_s-band images of 20 barred galaxies show an increase in the peak amplitude
of the normalized m=2 Fourier component with the R_25-normalized radius at this
peak. This implies that longer bars have higher amplitudes. The long bars
also correlate with an increased density in the central parts of the disks, as
measured by the luminosity inside 0.25R_25 divided by the cube of this radius
in kpc. Because denser galaxies evolve faster, these correlations suggest that
bars grow in length and amplitude over a Hubble time with the fastest evolution
occurring in the densest galaxies. All but three of the sample have early-type
flat bars; there is no clear correlation between the correlated quantities and

A Risk Benefit Analysis of Mariculture as a means to Reduce the Impacts of Terrestrial Production of Food and Energy
The Scottish Aquaculture Research Forum (SARF) and WWF-UK commissioned this study to investigate whether the pressure on land and freshwater for future food and energy resources, and impacts on the climate, related to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, may be reduced through expansion of global mariculture. The study has undertaken a high level assessment of the ‘environmental footprint’ of global mariculture and terrestrial-based food and energy production systems through the collation and assessment of available Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) for key food products (beef, pork, chicken, freshwater finfish, marine finfish, shellfish and crustacean species) and biomass (terrestrial and algal) for energy production. The outputs of the footprint comparison were then used to assess the risks and benefits of increasing global mariculture, through the development of projected future scenarios in which mariculture contributes differing proportions of projected future food requirements. The analysis also qualitatively considered the socio-economic and wider environmental risks and benefits (e.g. in relation to ecosystem services) of global mariculture expansion, where expansion may occur geographically and whether future technological developments may help mitigate against identified impacts. The study identifies the key uncertainties and limitations of the risk/benefit analysis and makes prioritised recommendations on how these limitations can be addressed and the analysis developed for more regional or site-specific assessments
Interstellar Scintillation of the Polarized Flux Density in Quasar, PKS 0405-385
The remarkable rapid variations in radio flux density and polarization of the
quasar PKS 0405-385 observed in 1996 are subject to a correlation analysis,
from which characteristic time scales and amplitudes are derived. The
variations are interpreted as interstellar scintillations. The cm wavelength
observations are in the weak scintillation regime for which models for the
various auto- and cross-correlations of the Stokes parameters are derived and
fitted to the observations. These are well modelled by interstellar
scintillation (ISS) of a 30 by 22 micro-as source, with about 180 degree
rotation of the polarization angle along its long dimension. This success in
explaining the remarkable intra-day variations (IDV)in polarization confirms
that ISS gives rise to the IDV in this quasar. However, the fit requires the
scintillations to be occurring much closer to the Earth than expected according
to the standard model for the ionized interstellar medium (IISM). Scattering at
distances in the range 3-30 parsec are required to explain the observations.
The associated source model has a peak brightness temperature near 2.0
10^{13}K, which is about twenty-five times smaller than previously derived for
this source. This reduces the implied Doppler factor in the relativistic jet,
presumed responsible to 10-20, high but just compatible with cm wavelength VLBI

Global Seafood Trade: Insights in Sustainability Messaging and Claims of the Major Producing and Consuming Regions
Seafood supply chains are complex, not least in the diverse origins of capture fisheries and through aquaculture production being increasingly shared across nations. The business-to-business (B2B) seafood trade is supported by seafood shows that facilitate networking and act as fora for signaling of perceptions and values. In the Global North, sustainability related certifications and messaging have emerged as an important driver to channel the demands of consumers, institutions, and lead firms. This study investigates which logos, certifications, and claims were presented at the exhibitor booths within five seafood trade shows in China, Europe, and USA. The results indicate a difference in the way seafood is advertised. Messaging at the Chinese shows had less of an emphasis on sustainability compared to that in Europe and the USA, but placed a greater emphasis on food safety and quality than on environmental concerns. These findings suggest cultural differences in the way seafood production and consumption is communicated through B2B messaging. Traders often act as choice editors for final consumers. Therefore, it is essential to convey production processes and sustainability issues between traders and the market. An understanding of culture, messaging strategies, and interpretation could support better communication of product characteristics such as sustainability between producers, traders, and consumers
