Estimating the Economic Costs of Espionage
Economic espionage is a serious threat to the vitality of the U.S. economy. While this is a widely accepted fact, there is no formal way to measure the damage an incident of economic espionage has on the U.S. economy. The U.S. government would like to know how damaging economic espionage is on the economy. However, the full repercussions of an incident of economic espionage are never known. A stolen trade secret, over the course of many years, could be used in different products and in different industries. The loss of a trade secret is an immeasurable value.
Instead of attempting to measure such an overarching elusive concept, the research team sought to measure the potential consequence of economic espionage. In this study, the research team constructed a model to identify the severity of an incident of economic espionage and its consequences on the U.S. economy. The model was designed for use by federal government employees with the intent that the federal government could apply publically available case information to the model. The model provides a qualitative estimate of âconsequenceâ as it relates to economic loss.
The model generates a severity score between 0 and 1, which corresponds to a âlowâ, âmoderateâ, and âhighâ consequence. The severity score incorporates the modelâs four main variables into two primary components: âIndustryâ and âCase Variablesâ.
âIndustryâ assesses the significance of where the incident of economic espionage occurred. âIndustryâ is derived from a combination of the percentage of GDP in terms of value added for each of the 14 industries and the âsusceptibilityâ of each of the 14 industries. This process enables the model to be individualized to a specific industry, which allows a different potential consequence to the U.S. economy.
âCase Variablesâ assess the significance of the incident of economic espionage. âCase Variablesâ include the âCharacteristics of the Theftâ, âCostâ, and âBeneficiaryâ variables. The model requires the user to first select the âIndustryâ where the incident occurred and then to identify the âCase Variablesâ. Therefore, the potential consequence on the U.S. economy from an incident of economic espionage is dependent on the industry.
To greater individualize the model, the research team designed a method whereby questions within the model would matter more when compared to others. As no two incidents of economic espionage are identical, the research team developed a system of weighing the variables and their respective questions. With all the variables measured, standardized, and weighed against each other, the model calculates an overall severity score, which corresponds to the level of consequence for an incident of economic espionage.CENTRA Technolog
Hematopoietic Fingerprints: An Expression Database of Stem Cells and Their Progeny
SummaryHematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) continuously regenerate the hematologic system, yet few genes regulating this process have been defined. To identify candidate factors involved in differentiation and self-renewal, we have generated an expression database of hematopoietic stem cells and their differentiated progeny, including erythrocytes, granulocytes, monocytes, NK cells, activated and naive T cells, and B cells. Bioinformatic analysis revealed HSCs were more transcriptionally active than their progeny and shared a common activation mechanism with T cells. Each cell type also displayed unique biases in the regulation of particular genetic pathways, with Wnt signaling particularly enhanced in HSCs. We identified âŒ100â400 genes uniquely expressed in each cell type, termed lineage âfingerprints.â In overexpression studies, two of these genes, Zfp105 from the NK cell lineage, and Ets2 from the monocyte lineage, were able to significantly influence differentiation toward their respective lineages, demonstrating the utility of the fingerprints for identifying genes that regulate differentiation
Working conditions and Work-Family Conflict in German hospital physicians: psychosocial and organisational predictors and consequences
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Germany currently experiences a situation of major physician attrition. The incompatibility between work and family has been discussed as one of the major reasons for the increasing departure of German physicians for non-clinical occupations or abroad. This study investigates predictors for one particular direction of Work-Family Conflict â namely work interfering with family conflict (WIF) â which are located within the psychosocial work environment or work organisation of hospital physicians. Furthermore, effects of WIF on the individual physicians' physical and mental health were examined. Analyses were performed with an emphasis on gender differences. Comparisons with the general German population were made.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data were collected by questionnaires as part of a study on <it>Psychosocial work hazards and strains of German hospital physicians </it>during AprilâJuly 2005. Two hundred and ninety-six hospital physicians (response rate 38.9%) participated in the survey. The Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ), work interfering with family conflict scale (WIF), and hospital-specific single items on work organisation were used to assess WIF, its predictors, and consequences.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>German hospital physicians reported elevated levels of WIF (mean = 74) compared to the general German population (mean = 45, <it>p </it>< .01). No significant gender difference was found. Predictors for the WIF were lower age, high quantitative demands at work, elevated number of days at work despite own illness, and consequences of short-notice changes in the duty roster. Good sense of community at work was a protective factor. Compared to the general German population, we observed a significant higher level of quantitative work demands among hospital physicians (mean = 73 vs. mean = 57, <it>p </it>< .01). High values of WIF were significantly correlated to higher rates of personal burnout, behavioural and cognitive stress symptoms, and the intention to leave the job. In contrast, low levels of WIF predicted higher job satisfaction, better self-judged general health status, better work ability, and higher satisfaction with life in general. Compared to the German general population, physicians showed significantly higher levels of individual stress and quality of life as well as lower levels for well-being. This has to be judged as an alerting finding regarding the state of physicians' health.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In our study, work interfering with family conflict (WIF) as part of Work-Family Conflict (WFC) was highly prevalent among German hospital physicians. Factors of work organisation as well as factors of interpersonal relations at work were identified as significant predictors for WIF. Some of these predictors are accessible to alteration by improving work organisation in hospitals.</p
Cytosolic NADPH balancing in Penicillium chrysogenum cultivated on mixtures of glucose and ethanol
The in vivo flux through the oxidative branch of the pentose phosphate pathway (oxPPP) in Penicillium chrysogenum was determined during growth in glucose/ethanol carbon-limited chemostat cultures, at the same growth rate. Non-stationary 13C flux analysis was used to measure the oxPPP flux. A nearly constant oxPPP flux was found for all glucose/ethanol ratios studied. This indicates that the cytosolic NADPH supply is independent of the amount of assimilated ethanol. The cofactor assignment in the model of van Gulik et al. (Biotechnol Bioeng 68(6):602â618, 2000) was supported using the published genome annotation of P. chrysogenum. Metabolic flux analysis showed that NADPH requirements in the cytosol remain nearly the same in these experiments due to constant biomass growth. Based on the cytosolic NADPH balance, it is known that the cytosolic aldehyde dehydrogenase in P. chrysogenum is NADâ+â dependent. Metabolic modeling shows that changing the NADâ+â-aldehyde dehydrogenase to NADPâ+â-aldehyde dehydrogenase can increase the penicillin yield on substrate
Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome in 41 adults: the illness, the patients, and problems of management
BACKGROUND: Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome (CVS) is a disorder characterized by recurrent, stereotypic episodes of incapacitating nausea, vomiting and other symptoms, separated by intervals of comparative wellness. This report describes the clinical features, co-morbidities and problems encountered in management of 41 adult patients who met the diagnostic criteria for CVS. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of adults with CVS seen between 1994 and 2003. Follow-up data were obtained by mailed questionnaires. RESULTS: Age of onset ranged from 2 to 49 years. The duration of CVS at the time of consultation ranged from less than 1 year to 49 years. CVS episodes were stereotypic in respect of their hours of onset, symptomatology and length. Ninety-three percent of patients had recognizable prodromes. Half of the patients experienced a constellation of symptoms consisting of CVS episodes, migraine diathesis, inter-episodic dyspeptic nausea and a history of panic attacks. Deterioration in the course of CVS is indicated by coalescence of episodes in time. The prognosis of CVS is favorable in the majority of patients. CONCLUSION: CVS is a disabling disorder affecting adults as well as children. Because its occurrence in adults is little known, patients experience delayed or mis-diagnosis and ineffectual, sometimes inappropriately invasive management
Specific Syndecan-1 Domains Regulate Mesenchymal Tumor Cell Adhesion, Motility and Migration
Malignant mesothelioma is an asbestos induced cancer that is difficult to diagnose.
Several studies have combined biomarkers to improve mesothelioma diagnosis, but
with moderate success, and there is a need for new mesothelioma biomarkers. The
tumour is often resistant to treatment and most patients will survive less than a year.
An indicator of patient survival is the tumours growth pattern, which in turn is
influenced by expressed proteoglycans.
In this thesis work, we aim to improve the possibilities to diagnose malignant
mesothelioma by combining biomarkers and by identifying new ones. We also
investigate tumour driving mechanisms with focus on one of these suggested
biomarkers, the cell-bound proteoglycan syndecan-1.
We were able to construct a diagnostic two-step model based on biomarkers in patient
material. By implementing a cut-off level and thereafter focusing on unresolved patients
we combined hyaluronan and N-ERC/mesothelin (paper I), which significantly increased
the diagnostic accuracy for malignant mesothelioma. To further improve diagnosis, we
used mass spectrometry to find new biomarkers. We identified and validated galectin-1,
which was excellent in discriminating mesotheliomas from adenocarcinomas (paper II).
In the same study, we were also the first to describe aldo-keto reductase 1B10 as a
novel prognostic mesothelioma biomarker.
Syndecan-1 has been indicated as a marker for carcinomas. In paper I we describe how
higher levels of syndecan-1 indicate the presence of a carcinoma over a mesothelioma.
This was verified in paper II when syndecan-1 was identified as downregulated in fluids
from mesothelioma patients compared to lung cancer patients. Paper III and paper IV
focus on this proteoglycan.
Malignant cell lines transfected with syndecan-1 and various truncated forms of
syndecan-1 affected adhesion and migration, which are key features of cancer invasion
(paper III). The results showed a domain- and cell type specific effect on the cellsâ
motility. Regulating syndecan-1 levels and analysing the global gene expression of
mesothelioma cells made it evident that this proteoglycan has a strong influence on
transforming growth factor ÎČ signalling and several growth factor pathways (paper IV).
Links to cell migration and proliferation were furthermore identified, along with
glycosaminoglycan modifying enzymes. These results can shed light on the complex role
of syndecan-1 in invasion and growth of malignant mesenchymal cells.
Taken together, this thesis work describes a complement to conventional mesothelioma
diagnosis and identifies novel biomarkers. Furthermore, the potential biomarker
syndecan-1 was shown to have an effect on cell motility and proliferation. These results
increase our understanding of this aggressive malignancy
The global impact of non-communicable diseases on macro-economic productivity: a systematic review
© 2015, The Author(s). Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have large economic impact at multiple levels. To systematically review the literature investigating the economic impact of NCDs [including coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), cancer (lung, colon, cervical and breast), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD)] on macro-economic productivity. Systematic search, up to November 6th 2014, of medical databases (Medline, Embase and Google Scholar) without language restrictions. To identify additional publications, we searched the reference lists of retrieved studies and contacted authors in the field. Randomized controlled trials, cohort, caseâcontrol, cross-sectional, ecological studies and modelling studies carried out in adults (>18 years old) were included. Two independent reviewers performed all abstract and full text selection. Disagreements were resolved through consensus or consulting a third reviewer. Two independent reviewers extracted data using a predesigned data collection form. Main outcome measure was the impact of the selected NCDs on productivity, measured in DALYs, productivity costs, and labor market participation, including unemployment, return to work and sick leave. From 4542 references, 126 studies met the inclusion criteria, many of which focused on the impact of more than one NCD on productivity. Breast cancer was the most common (n = 45), followed by stroke (n = 31), COPD (n = 24), colon cancer (n = 24), DM (n = 22), lung cancer (n = 16), CVD (n = 15), cervical cancer (n = 7) and CKD (n = 2). Four studies were from the WHO African Region, 52 from the European Region, 53 from the Region of the Americas and 16 from the Western Pacific Region, one from the Eastern Mediterranean Region and none from South East Asia. We found large regional differences in DALYs attributable to NCDs but especially for cervical and lung cancer. Productivity losses in the USA ranged from 88 million US dollars (USD) for COPD to 20.9 billion USD for colon cancer. CHD costs the Australian economy 13.2 billion USD per year. People with DM, COPD and survivors of breast and especially lung cancer are at a higher risk of reduced labor market participation. Overall NCDs generate a large impact on macro-economic productivity in most WHO regions irrespective of continent and income. The absolute global impact in terms of dollars and DALYs remains an elusive challenge due to the wide heterogeneity in the included studies as well as limited information from low- and middle-income countries.WHO; NestleÂŽ Nutrition (Nestec Ltd.); Metagenics Inc.; and AX

Early role of vascular dysregulation on late-onset Alzheimer's disease based on multifactorial data-driven analysis
Multifactorial mechanisms underlying late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) are poorly characterized from an integrative perspective. Here spatiotemporal alterations in brain amyloid-ÎČ deposition, metabolism, vascular, functional activity at rest, structural properties, cognitive integrity and peripheral proteins levels are characterized in relation to LOAD progression. We analyse over 7,700 brain images and tens of plasma and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). Through a multifactorial data-driven analysis, we obtain dynamic LOADâabnormality indices for all biomarkers, and a tentative temporal ordering of disease progression. Imaging results suggest that intra-brain vascular dysregulation is an early pathological event during disease development. Cognitive decline is noticeable from initial LOAD stages, suggesting early memory deficit associated with the primary disease factors. High abnormality levels are also observed for specific proteins associated with the vascular system's integrity. Although still subjected to the sensitivity of the algorithms and biomarkers employed, our results might contribute to the development of preventive therapeutic interventions
