    Schr\"odinger-Lohe type models of quantum synchronization with nonidentical oscillators

    We study the asymptotic emergent dynamics of two models that can be thought of as extensions of the well known Schr\"odinger-Lohe model for quantum synchronization. More precisely, the interaction strength between different oscillators is determined by intrinsic parameters, following Cucker-Smale communication protocol. Unlike the original Schr\"odinger-Lohe system, where the interaction strength was assumed to be uniform, in the cases under our consideration the total mass of each quantum oscillator is allowed to vary in time. A striking consequence of this property is that these extended models yield configurations exhibiting phase, but not space, synchronization. The results are mainly based on the analysis of the ODE systems arising from the correlations, control over the well known Cucker-Smale dynamics, and the dynamics satisfied by the quantum order parameter.Comment: 18 pages, minor changes and submitte

    Clouseau Evaluation for Peer-to-Peer Transfer Operations

    We evaluate whether Clouseau, a commercial product from SafeMedia, Inc., is effective in discriminating between risky and non-risky P2P operations. We construct a testbed and assess the Clouseau's efficacy in interdicting risky content while passing non-risky content in both laboratory and office settings, using a wide variety of applications and protocols. We determine that Clouseau effectively blocks access to content via known P2P protocols communicating with networks identified by SafeMedia as containing risky content, but also prevents legitimate communications and does not block alternative protocols for accessing risky content.     Genetic alterations in gliosarcoma and giant cell glioblastoma

    The majority of glioblastomas develop rapidly with a short clinical history (primary glioblastoma IDH wild-type), whereas secondary glioblastomas progress from diffuse astrocytoma or anaplastic astrocytoma. IDH mutations are the genetic hallmark of secondary glioblastomas. Gliosarcomas and giant cell glioblastomas are rare histological glioblastoma variants, which usually develop rapidly. We determined the genetic patterns of 36 gliosarcomas and 19 giant cell glioblastomas. IDH1 and IDH2 mutations were absent in all 36 gliosarcomas and in 18 of 19 giant cell glioblastomas analyzed, indicating that they are histological variants of primary glioblastoma. Furthermore, LOH 10q (88%) and TERT promoter mutations (83%) were frequent in gliosarcomas. Copy number profiling using the 450k methylome array in 5 gliosarcomas revealed CDKN2A homozygous deletion (3 cases), trisomy chromosome 7 (2 cases), and monosomy chromosome 10 (2 cases). Giant cell glioblastomas had LOH 10q in 50% and LOH 19q in 42% of cases. ATRX loss was detected immunohistochemically in 19% of giant cell glioblastomas, but absent in 17 gliosarcomas. These and previous results suggest that gliosarcomas are a variant of, and genetically similar to, primary glioblastomas, except for a lack of EGFR amplification, while giant cell glioblastoma occupies a hybrid position between primary and secondary glioblastomas.     New Targeted Therapies for Thyroid Cancer

    The increasing incidence of thyroid cancer is associated with a higher number of advanced disease characterized by the loss of cancer differentiation and metastatic spread. The knowledge of the molecular pathways involved in the pathogenesis of thyroid cancer has made possible the development of new therapeutic drugs able to blockade the oncogenic kinases (BRAF V600E, RET/PTC) or signaling kinases [vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR), platelet-derived growth factor receptors (PDGFR)] involved in cellular growth and proliferation. Some clinical trials have been conducted showing the ability of targeted therapies (sorafenib, sunitinib, axitinib, imanitib, vandetanib, pazopanib, gefitinib) in stabilizing the course of the disease. Until now, however, no consensus guidelines have been established for patient selection and more data on toxicities and side effects are needed to be collected

    Quantitative analysis of the dopamine D4 receptor in the mouse brain

    The D4 receptor (D4R), a member of the dopamine D2-like receptor family, has been implicated in the pathophysiology of several diseases and has been the target of various investigations regarding its distribution and quantification. The brain distribution of the D4R has been well described in various species, but the quantification is still an issue of controversy, because no specific ligand is commercially available. To circumvent this difficulty we have performed a biochemical and autoradiographical study in brain samples obtained from mice lacking D4Rs and their wild-type siblings; comparison of their binding parameters allows a more accurate quantification of the members of the D2-like receptor family (D2, D3, and D4 receptors). We found that the distribution of D2-like receptors in mouse brain is similar to that of rat brain, i.e., caudate putamen, nucleus accumbens, olfactory tubercle, and hippocampus. The contribution of the D4R to the overall population of D2-like receptors is 17% in nucleus accumbens, 21% in caudate putamen and olfactory tubercle, and 40% in hippocampus. Based on our study we conclude that nemonapride probably binds to nondopaminergic sites that if not properly blocked may lead to overestimations of D4R levels. We observed that the experimental condition that better estimates the density of D4 receptors is the displacement of D2 and D3 [3H]nemonapride binding sites with cold raclopride.Fil: Defagot, Maria Cristina.
