Aerodynamic investigations of ventilated brake discs.
The heat dissipation and performance of a ventilated brake disc strongly depends
on the aerodynamic characteristics of the flow through the rotor passages. The
aim of this investigation was to provide an improved understanding of ventilated
brake rotor flow phenomena, with a view to improving heat dissipation, as well
as providing a measurement data set for validation of computational fluid
dynamics methods. The flow fields at the exit of four different brake rotor
geometries, rotated in free air, were measured using a five-hole pressure probe
and a hot-wire anemometry system. The principal measurements were taken using
two-component hot-wire techniques and were used to determine mean and unsteady
flow characteristics at the exit of the brake rotors. Using phase-locked data
processing, it was possible to reveal the spatial and temporal flow variation
within individual rotor passages. The effects of disc geometry and rotational
speed on the mean flow, passage turbulence intensity, and mass flow were
determined. The rotor exit jet and wake flow were clearly observed as
characterized by the passage geometry as well as definite regions of high and
low turbulence. The aerodynamic flow characteristics were found to be reasonably
independent of rotational speed but highly dependent upon rotor geometry
The Dynamics of Group Codes: Dual Abelian Group Codes and Systems
Fundamental results concerning the dynamics of abelian group codes
(behaviors) and their duals are developed. Duals of sequence spaces over
locally compact abelian groups may be defined via Pontryagin duality; dual
group codes are orthogonal subgroups of dual sequence spaces. The dual of a
complete code or system is finite, and the dual of a Laurent code or system is
(anti-)Laurent. If C and C^\perp are dual codes, then the state spaces of C act
as the character groups of the state spaces of C^\perp. The controllability
properties of C are the observability properties of C^\perp. In particular, C
is (strongly) controllable if and only if C^\perp is (strongly) observable, and
the controller memory of C is the observer memory of C^\perp. The controller
granules of C act as the character groups of the observer granules of C^\perp.
Examples of minimal observer-form encoder and syndrome-former constructions are
given. Finally, every observer granule of C is an "end-around" controller

Factors Influencing Utilization of Cervical Cancer Screening Services in Kenya: the Case of Nyeri County
Globally, cervical cancer continues to be a major cause of mortality and morbidity among women with developing countries accounting for more than 86% of the deaths from the disease. In Kenya, cervical cancer ranks as the second most frequent cancer among women: regrettably, with 80% of the cases presented during the late stages of the disease when the scope of successful treatment is limited. An opportunity to prevent occurrence of cervical cancer exists through cervical cancer screening for early detection and treatment of precancerous lesions before these develop to cancer. However, only a negligible proportion of women benefit from cervical cancer screening services in developing countries, including Kenya. The purpose of this descriptive survey study was to determine the factors influencing utilization of cervical cancer screening services; and focused on the women seeking maternal and family planning services at Central Provincial General Hospital, Kenya. The study established that, as in most developing countries, utilization of cervical cancer screening services was low, regardless of the women's education level, autonomy in decision making and even good family support. The low level of awareness on the need for screening services and the long waiting time at the clinic for those seeking the services were identified as the two key issues that negatively influenced the utilization of the screening services, It is therefore recommended that the Ministry of Health and other agencies, including individuals of good will, collaborate in designing and implementing awareness campaigns through the media and other appropriate avenues, including one-to-one encounters, targeting both men and women in the communities. It is also recommended that the male partners support their women in accessing this vital life-saving service
Configurational temperatures and interactions in charge-stabilized colloid
We demonstrate that the configurational temperature formalism can be derived
from the classical hypervirial theorem, and introduce a hierarchy of
hyperconfigurational temperature definitions, which are particularly well
suited for experimental studies. We then use these analytical tools to probe
the electrostatic interactions in monolayers of charge-stabilized colloidal
spheres confined by parallel glass surfaces. The configurational and
hyperconfigurational temperatures, together with a novel thermodynamic sum
rule, provide previously lacking self-consistency tests for interaction
measurements based on digital video microscopy, and thereby cast new light on
controversial reports of confinement-induced like-charge attractions. We
further introduce a new method for measuring the pair potential directly that
uses consistency of the configurational and hyperconfigurational temperatures

Diurnal and nocturnal temperatures for Atlantic salmon postsmolts (Salmo salar L.) during their early marine life
Data storage tags (DSTs) were applied to Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) smolts during their seaward migration in the spring of 2002 at a fish counting fence on Campbellton River, Newfoundland. Our objectives were to discover whether or not salmon smolts could carry DSTs and survive, whether or not useful data on thermal habitat could be obtained and interpreted, and whether or not salmon smolts moved vertically in the water column. Data were downloaded from 15 of the recovered tags and revealed the hourly water temperatures experienced by the fish for periods of 3 to 71 days. The data on the DSTs were analyzed for temperature patterns in relation to migration behavior and diurnal movement of the fish. While in the sea, the DSTs recorded night temperatures of 12.5°C, which were higher than day temperatures of 11.6°C; the record from moored recorders, however, indicated that sea temperatures actually declined at night. It is hypothesized that posts-molts avoid avian predators during daylight hours by positioning themselves deeper in the water column and that they were pursuing prey during the deeper vertical descents or ascents noted during the periods of more rapid changes in temperature
Photometric Selection of QSO Candidates From GALEX Sources
We present a catalog of 36,120 QSO candidates from the Galaxy Evolution
Explorer (GALEX) Release Two (GR2) UV catalog and the USNO-A2.0 optical
catalog. The selection criteria are established using known quasars from the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The SDSS sample is then used to assign
individual probabilities to our GALEX-USNO candidates. The mean probability is
~50%, and would rise to ~65% if better morphological information than that from
USNO were available to eliminate galaxies. The sample is ~40% complete for
i<=19.1. Candidates are cross-identified in 2MASS, FIRST, SDSS, and XMM-Newton
Slewing Survey (XMMSL1), whenever such counterparts exist. The present catalog
covers the 8000 square degrees of GR2 lying above 25 degrees Galactic latitude,
but can be extended to all 24,000 square degress that satisfy this criterion as
