Interacting Dipoles from Matrix Formulation of Noncommutative Gauge Theories
We study the IR behavior of noncommutative gauge theory in the matrix
formulation. We find that in this approach, the nature of the UV/IR mixing is
easily understood, which allows us to perform a reliable calculation of the
quantum effective action for the long wavelength modes of the noncommutative
gauge field. At one loop, we find that our description is weakly coupled only
in the supersymmetric theory. At two loops, we find non-trivial interaction
terms suggestive of dipole degrees of freedom. These dipoles exhibit a channel
duality reminiscent of string theory.Comment: LaTeX 11 pages, 4 figures; v.2 minor changes and some references

Skyrmion Dynamics and NMR Line Shapes in QHE Ferromagnets
The low energy charged excitations in quantum Hall ferromagnets are
topological defects in the spin orientation known as skyrmions. Recent
experimental studies on nuclear magnetic resonance spectral line shapes in
quantum well heterostructures show a transition from a motionally narrowed to a
broader `frozen' line shape as the temperature is lowered at fixed filling
factor. We present a skyrmion diffusion model that describes the experimental
observations qualitatively and shows a time scale of for
the transport relaxation time of the skyrmions. The transition is characterized
by an intermediate time regime that we demonstrate is weakly sensitive to the
dynamics of the charged spin texture excitations and the sub-band electronic
wave functions within our model. We also show that the spectral line shape is
very sensitive to the nuclear polarization profile along the z-axis obtained
through the optical pumping technique.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Energy dissipation in wave propagation in general relativistic plasma
Based on a recent communication by the present authors the question of energy
dissipation in magneto hydrodynamical waves in an inflating background in
general relativity is examined. It is found that the expanding background
introduces a sort of dragging force on the propagating wave such that unlike
the Newtonnian case energy gets dissipated as it progresses. This loss in
energy having no special relativistic analogue is, however, not mechanical in
nature as in elastic wave. It is also found that the energy loss is model
dependent and also depends on the number of dimensions.Comment: 12 page
Properties of the deconfining phase transition in SU(N) gauge theories
We extend our earlier investigation of the finite temperature deconfinement
transition in SU(N) gauge theories, with the emphasis on what happens as N->oo.
We calculate the latent heat in the continuum limit, and find the expected
quadratic in N behaviour at large N. We confirm that the phase transition,
which is second order for SU(2) and weakly first order for SU(3), becomes
robustly first order for N>3 and strengthens as N increases. As an aside, we
explain why the SU(2) specific heat shows no sign of any peak as T is varied
across what is supposedly a second order phase transition. We calculate the
effective string tension and electric gluon masses at T=Tc confirming the
discontinuous nature of the transition for N>2. We explicitly show that the
large-N `spatial' string tension does not vary with T for T<Tc and that it is
discontinuous at T=Tc. For T>Tc it increases as T-squared to a good
approximation, and the k-string tension ratios closely satisfy Casimir Scaling.
Within very small errors, we find a single Tc at which all the k-strings
deconfine, i.e. a step-by-step breaking of the relevant centre symmetry does
not occur. We calculate the interface tension but are unable to distinguish
between linear or quadratic in N variations, each of which can lead to a
striking but different N=oo deconfinement scenario. We remark on the location
of the bulk phase transition, which bounds the range of our large-N
calculations on the strong coupling side, and within whose hysteresis some of
our larger-N calculations are performed.Comment: 50 pages, 14 figure
Vortex dynamics and upper critical fields in ultrathin Bi films
Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of quench condensed, superconducting,
ultrathin films in a magnetic field are reported. These I-V's show
hysteresis for all films, grown both with and without thin underlayers.
Films on Ge underlayers, close to superconductor-insulator transition (SIT),
show a peak in the critical current, indicating a structural transformation of
the vortex solid (VS). These underlayers, used to make the films more
homogeneous, are found to be more effective in pinning the vortices. The upper
critical fields (B) of these films are determined from the resistive
transitions in perpendicular magnetic field. The temperature dependence of the
upper critical field is found to differ significantly from Ginzburg-Landau
theory, after modifications for disorder.Comment: Phys Rev B, to be published Figure 6 replaced with correct figur
Computing noncommutative Chern-Simons theory radiative corrections on the back of an envelope
We show that the renormalized U(N) noncommutative Chern-Simons theory can be
defined in perturbation theory so that there are no loop corrections to the 1PI
functional of the theory in an arbitrary homogeneous axial (time-like,
light-like or space-like) gauge. We define the free propagators of the fields
of the theory by using the Leibbrandt-Mandelstam prescription --which allows
Wick rotation and is consistent with power-counting-- and regularize its Green
functions with the help of a family of regulators which explicitly preserve the
infinitesimal vector Grassmann symmetry of the theory. We also show that in
perturbation theory the nonvanishing Green functions of the elementary fields
of the theory are products of the free propagators.Comment: In memory of Professor G. Leibbrand
Bianchi Type III Anisotropic Dark Energy Models with Constant Deceleration Parameter
The Bianchi type III dark energy models with constant deceleration parameter
are investigated. The equation of state parameter is found to be time
dependent and its existing range for this model is consistent with the recent
observations of SN Ia data, SN Ia data (with CMBR anisotropy) and galaxy
clustering statistics. The physical aspect of the dark energy models are
discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, Accepted version of IJT
Caustic Formation in Tachyon Effective Field Theories
Certain configurations of D-branes, for example wrong dimensional branes or
the brane-antibrane system, are unstable to decay. This instability is
described by the appearance of a tachyonic mode in the spectrum of open strings
ending on the brane(s). The decay of these unstable systems is described by the
rolling of the tachyon field from the unstable maximum to the minimum of its
potential. We analytically study the dynamics of the inhomogeneous tachyon
field as it rolls towards the true vacuum of the theory in the context of
several different tachyon effective actions. We find that the vacuum dynamics
of these theories is remarkably similar and in particular we show that in all
cases the tachyon field forms caustics where second and higher derivatives of
the field blow up. The formation of caustics signals a pathology in the
evolution since each of the effective actions considered is not reliable in the
vicinity of a caustic. We speculate that the formation of caustics is an
artifact of truncating the tachyon action, which should contain all orders of
derivatives acting on the field, to a finite number of derivatives. Finally, we
consider inhomogeneous solutions in p-adic string theory, a toy model of the
bosonic tachyon which contains derivatives of all orders acting on the field.
For a large class of initial conditions we conclusively show that the evolution
is well behaved in this case. It is unclear if these caustics are a genuine
prediction of string theory or not.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in JHEP. Revised

Cold Plasma Dispersion Relations in the Vicinity of a Schwarzschild Black Hole Horizon
We apply the ADM 3+1 formalism to derive the general relativistic
magnetohydrodynamic equations for cold plasma in spatially flat Schwarzschild
metric. Respective perturbed equations are linearized for non-magnetized and
magnetized plasmas both in non-rotating and rotating backgrounds. These are
then Fourier analyzed and the corresponding dispersion relations are obtained.
These relations are discussed for the existence of waves with positive angular
frequency in the region near the horizon. Our results support the fact that no
information can be extracted from the Schwarzschild black hole. It is concluded
that negative phase velocity propagates in the rotating background whether the
black hole is rotating or non-rotating.Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures accepted for publication in Gen. Relat. & Gravi
General structure of the photon self-energy in non-commutative QED
We study the behavior of the photon two point function, in non-commutative
QED, in a general covariant gauge and in arbitrary space-time dimensions. We
show, to all orders, that the photon self-energy is transverse. Using an
appropriate extension of the dimensional regularization method, we evaluate the
one-loop corrections, which show that the theory is renormalizable. We also
prove, to all orders, that the poles of the photon propagator are gauge
independent and briefly discuss some other related aspects.Comment: 16 pages, revtex4. This is the final version to be published in Phys.
