Measurement of νμ induced charged current inclusive cross section on water using the near detector of the T2K experiment
2016 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.The Tokai to Kamioka (T2K) Experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment located in Japan with the primary goal to measure precisely multiple neutrino flavor oscillation parameters. An off-axis muon neutrino beam peaking at 600 MeV is generated at the JPARC facility and directed towards the 50 kiloton Super-Kamiokande (SK) water Cherenkov detector located 295 km away. Measurements from a Near Detector that is 280m downstream of the neutrino beam target are used to constrain uncertainties in the beam flux prediction and neutrino interaction rates. We present a selection of inclusive charged current neutrino interactions on water. We used several sub-detectors in the ND280 complex, including a Pi-Zero detector (P0D) that has alternating planes of plastic scintillator and water bag layers, a time projection chamber (TPC) and fine-grained detector (FGD) to detect and reconstruct muons from neutrino charged current events. We use a statistical subtraction method with the water-in and water-out inclusive selection to extract a flux-averaged, νμ induced, charged current inclusive cross section. We also outline the evaluation of systematic uncertainties. We find an absolute cross section of ⟨σ⟩Φ = (6.37 ± 0.157(stat.) (−1.060/+0.910(sys.)) × 10−39 (cm2/H2O nucleon). Question Answering on Knowledge Bases and Text using Universal Schema and Memory Networks
Existing question answering methods infer answers either from a knowledge
base or from raw text. While knowledge base (KB) methods are good at answering
compositional questions, their performance is often affected by the
incompleteness of the KB. Au contraire, web text contains millions of facts
that are absent in the KB, however in an unstructured form. {\it Universal
schema} can support reasoning on the union of both structured KBs and
unstructured text by aligning them in a common embedded space. In this paper we
extend universal schema to natural language question answering, employing
\emph{memory networks} to attend to the large body of facts in the combination
of text and KB. Our models can be trained in an end-to-end fashion on
question-answer pairs. Evaluation results on \spades fill-in-the-blank question
answering dataset show that exploiting universal schema for question answering
is better than using either a KB or text alone. This model also outperforms the
current state-of-the-art by 8.5 points.\footnote{Code and data available

Characterization and Optimization of the Steel Beam to RC Wall Connection for use in Innovative Hybrid Coupled Wall Systems
[EN] Replaceable fuses as coupling elements, with detailed composite connections, can state the steel and concrete hybrid structures to be one of the best alternatives for a more feasible and easy repairable earthquake-proof structure. Therefore, an efficient composite connection for a newly suggested Hybrid Coupled Wall (HCW) system, consisting of a reinforced concrete shear wall coupled with steel side columns via dissipative steel shear links, is studied in this paper. The steel shear links are connected to a steel profile, embedded or passing through the RC wall. This embedded part should be so designed that the damage always occurs on the steel shear links (fuses) prior to minimal damage in the RC wall and embedded connection. The emphasis is on characterizing a suitable “steel link + embedded composite connection within the RC wall” configuration and calculate an appropriate embedment length while concentrating the seismic damage to the replaceable steel links. To this purpose, two joint configurations are designed through a capacity based approach, namely “partly embedded” and “passing through” steel beam connection and are examined through detailed FE analyses. A parametric study was also carried out to provide sufficient evidence towards the design considerations proposed in this study, in terms of strength, stiffness and bearing strength within the embedded connection.Das, R.; Degee, H.
