    Characterization of ferrochrome slag as an embankment and pavement material

    Various efforts are being made to use the industrial wastes as an alternate construction material to conserve the natural resources and effective utilization of the industrial waste to sustain the industrialization. But limited attempts have been made to characterize Indian ferrochrome slag as a construction material. In the work an effort has been made to characterize the ferrochrome slag as an embankment and pavement material. Different laboratory tests pertaining to Geotechnical and highway material characterization has been made and the results have been compared with other industrial wastes like fly ash, red mud and natural soil. An effort also has been made to use stabilize the low strength, residual soil in terms of increasing its strength and California bearing ratio values

    Gathering over Meeting Nodes in Infinite Grid

    The gathering over meeting nodes problem asks the robots to gather at one of the pre-defined meeting nodes. The robots are deployed on the nodes of an anonymous two-dimensional infinite grid which has a subset of nodes marked as meeting nodes. Robots are identical, autonomous, anonymous and oblivious. They operate under an asynchronous scheduler. They do not have any agreement on a global coordinate system. All the initial configurations for which the problem is deterministically unsolvable have been characterized. A deterministic distributed algorithm has been proposed to solve the problem for the remaining configurations. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is studied in terms of the number of moves required for gathering. A lower bound concerning the total number of moves required to solve the gathering problem has been derived

    AbstractVirus protein U (Vpu) from HIV-1, a small membrane protein composed of a transmembrane helical domain and two α-helices in an amphipathic cytoplasmic domain, down modulates several cellular proteins, including CD4, BST-2/CD317/tetherin, NTB-A, and CCR7. The interactions of Vpu with these proteins interfere with the immune system and enhance the release of newly synthesized virus particles. It is essential to characterize the structure and dynamics of Vpu in order to understand the mechanisms of the protein–protein interactions, and potentially to discover antiviral drugs. In this article, we describe investigations of the cytoplasmic domain of Vpu as well as full-length Vpu by NMR spectroscopy. These studies are complementary to earlier analysis of the transmembrane domain of Vpu. The results suggest that the two helices in the cytoplasmic domain form a U-shape. The length of the inter-helical loop in the cytoplasmic domain and the orientation of the third helix vary with the lipid composition, which demonstrate that the C-terminal helix is relatively flexible, providing accessibility for interaction partners

    Efficacy of low-energy extracorporeal shockwave therapy and a supervised clinical exercise protocol for the treatment of chronic lateral epicondylitis: A randomised controlled study

    AbstractThis randomised controlled trial was designed to evaluate the efficacy of low-energy extracorporeal shockwave therapy with a supervised exercise protocol for the treatment of chronic lateral epicondylitis. Thirty patients of lateral epicondylitis were randomly placed into two groups: an experimental group (n = 15) and a control group (n = 15). The experimental group received low-energy extracorporeal shockwave therapy and supervised exercise once a week for 3 weeks, whereas the control group received a supervised exercise protocol three times a week. Both the groups were instructed to carry out a home exercise programme twice daily for 4 weeks.Outcome parameters included in this study were pain intensity, pain-free grip strength, and the Disability of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire. Data were collected at baseline and after the end of treatment (at 4th week). There was a decline in pain, and improvements in pain-free grip strength and limb function in both groups compared with the baseline values. At the end of the treatment period, the experimental group had greater reduction in pain intensity and better improvement in limb function (p < 0.01). It can be concluded that low-energy extracorporeal shockwave therapy, when combined with regular exercise, is an effective method for reducing pain and improving upper limb function in patients with chronic lateral epicondylitis

    The Structure of the Chemokine Receptor CXCR1 in Phospholipid Bilayers and Interactions with IL-8

    CXCR1 is one of two high-affinity receptors for the CXC chemokine interleukin-8 (IL-8), a major mediator of immune and inflammatory responses implicated in many disorders, including tumor growth(1-3). IL-8, released in response to inflammatory stimuli, binds to the extracellular side of CXCR1. The ligand-activated intracellular signaling pathways result in neutrophil migration to the site of inflammation(2). CXCR1 is a class-A, rhodopsin-like G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), the largest class of integral membrane proteins responsible for cellular signal transduction and targeted as drug receptors(4-7). Despite its importance, its molecular mechanism is poorly understood due to the limited structural information available. Recently, structure determination of GPCRs has advanced by tailoring the receptors with stabilizing mutations, insertion of the protein T4 lysozyme and truncations of their amino acid sequences(8), as well as addition of stabilizing antibodies and small molecules(9) that facilitate crystallization in cubic phase monoolein mixtures(10). The intracellular loops of GPCRs are critical for G-protein interactions(11) and activation of CXCR1 involves both N-terminal residues and extracellular loops(2,12,13). Our previous NMR studies indicate that IL-8 binding to the N-terminal residues is mediated by the membrane, underscoring the importance of the phospholipid bilayer for physiological activity(14). Here we report the three-dimensional structure of human CXCR1 determined by NMR spectroscopy. The receptor is in liquid crystalline phospholipid bilayers, without modification of its amino acid sequence and under physiological conditions. Features important for intracellular G-protein activation and signal transduction are revealed

    Glycosylation of Erythrocyte Spectrin and Its Modification in Visceral Leishmaniasis

    Using a lectin, Achatinin-H, having preferential specificity for glycoproteins with terminal 9-O-acetyl sialic acid derivatives linked in α2-6 linkages to subterminal N-acetylgalactosamine, eight distinct disease-associated 9-O-acetylated sialoglycoproteins was purified from erythrocytes of visceral leishmaniaisis (VL) patients (RBCVL). Analyses of tryptic fragments by mass spectrometry led to the identification of two high-molecular weight 9-O-acetylated sialoglycoproteins as human erythrocytic α- and β-spectrin. Total spectrin purified from erythrocytes of VL patients (spectrinVL) was reactive with Achatinin-H. Interestingly, along with two high molecular weight bands corresponding to α- and β-spectrin another low molecular weight 60 kDa band was observed. Total spectrin was also purified from normal human erythrocytes (spectrinN) and insignificant binding with Achatinin-H was demonstrated. Additionally, this 60 kDa fragment was totally absent in spectrinN. Although the presence of both N- and O-glycosylations was found both in spectrinN and spectrinVL, enhanced sialylation was predominantly induced in spectrinVL. Sialic acids accounted for approximately 1.25 kDa mass of the 60 kDa polypeptide. The demonstration of a few identified sialylated tryptic fragments of α- and β-spectrinVL confirmed the presence of terminal sialic acids. Molecular modelling studies of spectrin suggest that a sugar moiety can fit into the potential glycosylation sites. Interestingly, highly sialylated spectrinVL showed decreased binding with spectrin-depleted inside-out membrane vesicles of normal erythrocytes compared to spectrinN suggesting functional abnormality. Taken together this is the first report of glycosylated eythrocytic spectrin in normal erythrocytes and its enhanced sialylation in RBCVL. The enhanced sialylation of this cytoskeleton protein is possibly related to the fragmentation of spectrinVL as evidenced by the presence of an additional 60 kDa fragment, absent in spectrinN which possibly affects the biology of RBCVL linked to both severe distortion of erythrocyte development and impairment of erythrocyte membrane integrity and may provide an explanation for their sensitivity to hemolysis and anemia in VL patients

    Risk portfolio on modern finance has become increasingly technical, requiring the use of sophisticated mathematical tools in both research and practice. Since companies cannot insure themselves completely against risk, as human incompetence in predicting the future precisely that written in Al-Quran surah Luqman verse 34, they have to manage it to yield an optimal portfolio. The objective here is to minimize the variance among all portfolios, or alternatively, to maximize expected return among all portfolios that has at least a certain expected return. Furthermore, this study focuses on optimizing risk portfolio so called Markowitz MVO (Mean-Variance Optimization). Some theoretical frameworks for analysis are arithmetic mean, geometric mean, variance, covariance, linear programming, and quadratic programming. Moreover, finding a minimum variance portfolio produces a convex quadratic programming, that is minimizing the objective function ðð¥with constraintsð ð 𥠥 ðandð´ð¥ = ð. The outcome of this research is the solution of optimal risk portofolio in some investments that could be finished smoothly using MATLAB R2007b software together with its graphic analysis

    Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States.     Juxtaposing BTE and ATE – on the role of the European insurance industry in funding civil litigation

    One of the ways in which legal services are financed, and indeed shaped, is through private insurance arrangement. Two contrasting types of legal expenses insurance contracts (LEI) seem to dominate in Europe: before the event (BTE) and after the event (ATE) legal expenses insurance. Notwithstanding institutional differences between different legal systems, BTE and ATE insurance arrangements may be instrumental if government policy is geared towards strengthening a market-oriented system of financing access to justice for individuals and business. At the same time, emphasizing the role of a private industry as a keeper of the gates to justice raises issues of accountability and transparency, not readily reconcilable with demands of competition. Moreover, multiple actors (clients, lawyers, courts, insurers) are involved, causing behavioural dynamics which are not easily predicted or influenced. Against this background, this paper looks into BTE and ATE arrangements by analysing the particularities of BTE and ATE arrangements currently available in some European jurisdictions and by painting a picture of their respective markets and legal contexts. This allows for some reflection on the performance of BTE and ATE providers as both financiers and keepers. Two issues emerge from the analysis that are worthy of some further reflection. Firstly, there is the problematic long-term sustainability of some ATE products. Secondly, the challenges faced by policymakers that would like to nudge consumers into voluntarily taking out BTE LEI
