Teaching \u3cem\u3eWhren\u3c/em\u3e to White Kids

This Article addresses issues at the intersection of United States v. Whren and Grutter v. Bollinger at a time when the reality of racial profiling was recently illustrated by the high-profile arrest of a prominent Harvard professor. Given the highly racialized nature of criminal procedure, there is a surprising dearth of writing about the unique problems of teaching issues such as racial profiling in racially homogeneous classrooms. Because African American and other minority students often experience the criminal justice system in radically different ways than do Whites, the lack of minority voices poses a significant barrier to effectively teaching criminal procedure. This Article critiques current law school pedagogical approaches and suggests that we must both re-think academic methods for teaching criminal procedure within the classroom and expose \u27post-racial mythologizing outside the classroom

Educating adolescents with emotional and behavior disabilities: A Bottom-up approach

This study presents a review of the literature describing the characteristics of students with severe emotional and behavioral disabilities (SED). Studies examining the best educational practices for this population of students are also reviewed and discussed. The author concludes that the best educational programs for students with SED contain an emphasis on personal responsibility and academic success within a day treatment setting. To test this hypothesis, the author examined one such program, the Avalon School of Rochester, New York, which exhibits many of the features correlated in the literature with student success. This study concludes that, given the choice to succeed or fail, some adolescents with SED will succeed; however, given the expectation of failure, many do not succeed

Offenhaltung von Trockenrasen durch Beweidung mit Aubrac-Rindern in der Teucheler Heide bei Wittenberg

Gegenstand des nachfolgenden Berichts ist ein ehemaliges militärisches Übungsgelände in der Teucheler Heide, einem Wald- und Offenlandgebiet des Roslau-Wittenberger Vorflämings unmittelbar nördlich des Stadtgebietes von Wittenberg. Der militärische Übungsbetrieb hatte wie in vielen derartigen Gebieten zur Entwaldung und Entstehung von Offenland mit Trockenrasen und anderen Grasfluren bis hin zu größeren vegetationsfreien Flächen geführt. Seit der Auflassung im Jahr 1993 setzte dann eine Wiederbewaldung ein. Die Teucheler Heide stand bereits seit den 1990er Jahren im besonderen Fokus der Naturschutzverwaltung des Landkreises Wittenberg und des Landes und wird als geplantes Naturschutzgebiet geführt. Dies ist begründet durch die Vorkommen von Trockenrasen in basenreicher Ausbildung und wird unterstrichen durch Nachweise seltener und gefährdeter Arten der Wirbellosenfauna. In einer durch die untere Naturschutzbehörde veranlassten Gesamtbearbeitung des Gebietes (Halfmann et al. 1997) wurde die Schutzwürdigkeit des Gebietes herausgestellt und der Bedarf hinsichtlich der Pflege und Entwicklung ermittelt. Eine dauerhafte Bewirtschaftung wurde nach Veräußerung der Liegenschaft an einen privaten Eigentümer im Jahr 2002 etabliert. Seitdem werden die Flächen in Abstimmung mit der Naturschutzbehörde extensiv mit einer Herde aus Aubrac-Rindern beweidet. Die Auswirkungen der Rinder-Beweidung auf Zustand und Verbreitung der Offenlandflächen wurden im Auftrag der unteren Naturschutzbehörde im Abstand von einigen Jahren kontrolliert (Darmer 2006, 2010).
