    Fetal Macrosomia in Pregnant Women with Gestational Diabetes

    The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of fetal macrosomia in newborns from mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and healthy mothers, as well as determining the influence of fetal growth on pregnancy termination, on complications in pregnancy, during delivery and puerperium and on neonatal complications. In the study were included 351 pregnant women with GDM, as well as control group of 1502 healthy pregnant women. Newborns of mothers with GDM had significantly higher birth weight and length, ponderal index >2.85 was more frequent, they were macrosomic and hypertrophic (disproportional and proportional), had smaller Apgar score and more frequent neonatal complications (p<0.05). Fetal macrosomia and fetal hypertrophy alone or, particularly, connected with disproportional fetal growth, but disproportional hypotrophy as well, had significantly influence on greater frequency of delivery and puerperal complications, delivery completion with Cesarean section and neonatal complications in pregnant women with GDM

    Risk Factor Analysis and Diagnoses of Coronary Heart Disease in Patients with Hypercholesterolemia from Croatian Zagorje County

    Our aim is to determine if there exists a difference in risk factors and diagnosis between patients being treated on internal medicine ward for coronary heart disease who have higher levels of cholesterol in their blood and other patients, without proved higher levels of cholesterol, hospitalized for coronary heart disease. We followed patients hospitalized in General Hospital Zabok for coronary heart disease for the period between 2004–2006y. On admission patients were diagnosed with coronary heart disease based on laboratory markers specific for the disease (CK, troponin, LDH,CRP), ECG and history taking. We analyzed two groups of patients for diagnosis and risk factors on discharge from the hospital: one group with proven hypercholesterolemia, the other with coronary heart disease without hypercholesterolemia. For the duration of the study there were no significant alternations concerning risk factors for coronary heart disease, and hypertension was the most prevalent of these factors in both groups. Values of HDL, as an indirect indicator of coronary heart disease, were lower in both groups for the duration of the study. In group of patients with hypercholesterolemia myocardial infarction with a ST segment elevation, as a discharge diagnosis, was a more prevalent complication of the disease, while for the group of patients without hypercholesterolemia stable angina pectoris was more prevalent and this is explained as atheroma plaque stabilization when there are normal values of blood cholesterol

    Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) and Cytoreductive Surgery (CS) as Treatment of Peritoneal Carcinomatosis: Preliminary Results in Croatia

    The purpose of our study was to evaluate initial results following introduction of Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) and Cytoreductive Surgery (CS). Twenty two patients with intraperitoneal malignancy undergone cytoreductive surgery (CS) and hyperthermic intraoperative chemotherapy (HIPEC) between January of 2007 and January 2010. Nine patients had adenocarcinoma of colorectal origin, 8 patients had ovarian cancer, and 5 had pseudomyxoma peritonei. Inclusion criteria were diagnosis of peritoneal carcinomatosis based on intraoperative assessment during first operative procedure for intraabdominal malignancy or follow-up diagnostic imaging proof. Excluded were patients with known malignant proliferation outside abdomen, liver metastasis and ASA score 4 and higher. All patients with pseudomyxoma peritonei diagnosis are alive, with mean follow-up time 24.8 months (range 15–35). In group of patients with adenocarcinoma from colorectal origin, 3 died, resulting in mean survival time 7.6 months (range 1–16). In group of patients with ovarian cancer, 2 died, resulting in mean survival time 13.8 months (range 0–31). Two patients died in early postoperative period. Most of the patients had some sort of mental disorder. Although HIPEC with CS improves survival, during introduction period higher morbidity and mortality could be expected

    A Study of the Flexural Properties of PA12/Clay Nanocomposites

    Polymer nanocomposites consist of a polymer matrix and reinforcing particles that have at least one dimension under 100 nm. The processing of nanocomposite polymers is the most important stage, determining the final properties of nanocomposites. Nanocomposites are now preferentially prepared by melt-mixing using conventional compounding processes such as twin-screw extrusion. Many processing parameters (polymer matrix type, content and type of nanofiller, barrel temperature, screw speed, number and shape of extruder screws, etc.) affect the properties of nanocomposites. This research work represents an investigation of the influence of processing parameters (amount of nanoclay filler, the screw rotation speed, and extruder barrel temperature) on the flexural properties of polyamide 12/nanoclay-reinforced nanocomposite. From the test results, it is apparent that an increase in nanoclay content from 1 to 8% significantly increases flexural strength. The obtained nanocomposite has a 19% higher flexural strength and a 56% higher flexural modulus than pure PA12. Mathematical models that show the dependence of flexural strength and flexural modulus on the processing parameters used were obtained as a result of this analysis

Fetalna makrosomija i fetalna hipertrofija same, posebice udružene s disproporcionalnim fetalnim rastom, ali i disproporcionalna hipotrofija, imaju značajan utjecaj na povećanu učestalost komplikacija u porodu i puerperiju, dovršenja poroda SC i neonatalnih komplikacija u trudnica s GDM
