Liquid micrurgy chamber and microsyringe designs allow more efficient micromanipulations

    Get PDF
More efficient micromanipulations on large amoebae achieved by liquid micrurgy chamber and microsyringe. These innovations move the system closer to the specimen, and flatten the specimen for a clear view of the nuclei, also eliminating spherical abberation and evaporation

Stratification of centrifuged amoeba nuclei investigated by electron microscopy

    Get PDF
Study establishes a relationship between radioresistance and the nucleolar stratification characteristics of various amoeba species. Two species of fresh water amoeba are studied with the electron microscope. The report discusses the nature of nucleolar layers and their possible relationship to the differences in radiosensitivity of the two amoeba species

Protein-Mediated DNA Loops: Effects of Protein Bridge Size and Kinks

This paper focuses on the probability that a portion of DNA closes on itself through thermal fluctuations. We investigate the dependence of this probability upon the size r of a protein bridge and/or the presence of a kink at half DNA length. The DNA is modeled by the Worm-Like Chain model, and the probability of loop formation is calculated in two ways: exact numerical evaluation of the constrained path integral and the extension of the Shimada and Yamakawa saddle point approximation. For example, we find that the looping free energy of a 100 base pairs DNA decreases from 24 kT to 13 kT when the loop is closed by a protein of r = 10 nm length. It further decreases to 5 kT when the loop has a kink of 120 degrees at half-length.Comment: corrected typos and figures, references updated; 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Study of methane fuel for subsonic transport aircraft

    Get PDF
The cost and performance were defined for commercial transport using liquid methane including its fuel system and the ground facility complex required for the processing and storage of methane. A cost and performance comparison was made with Jet A and hydrogen powered aircraft of the same payload and range capability. Extensive design work was done on cryogenic fuel tanks, insulation systems as well as the fuel system itself. Three candidate fuel tank locations were evaluated, i.e., fuselage tanks, wing tanks or external pylon tanks
