Combustor diffuser interaction program
Advances in gas turbine engine performance are achieved by using compressor systems with high stage loading and low part count, which result in high exit Mach numbers. The diffuser and combustor systems in such engines should be optimized to reduce system pressure loss and to maximize the engine thrust-to-weight ratio and minimize length. The state-of-the-art combustor-diffuser systems do not meet these requirements. Detailed understanding of the combustor-diffuser flow field interaction is required for designing advanced gas turbine engines. An experimental study of the combustor-diffuser interaction (CDI) is being conducted to obtain data for the evaluation and improvement of analytical models applicable to a wide variety of diffuser designs. The CDI program consists of four technical phases: Literature Search; Baseline Configuration; Parametric Configurations; and Performance Configurations. Phase 2 of the program is in progress
Enforcing public data archiving policies in academic publishing: A study of ecology journals
To improve the quality and efficiency of research, groups within the
scientific community seek to exploit the value of data sharing. Funders,
institutions, and specialist organizations are developing and implementing
strategies to encourage or mandate data sharing within and across disciplines,
with varying degrees of success. Academic journals in ecology and evolution
have adopted several types of public data archiving policies requiring authors
to make data underlying scholarly manuscripts freely available. Yet anecdotes
from the community and studies evaluating data availability suggest that these
policies have not obtained the desired effects, both in terms of quantity and
quality of available datasets. We conducted a qualitative, interview-based
study with journal editorial staff and other stakeholders in the academic
publishing process to examine how journals enforce data archiving policies. We
specifically sought to establish who editors and other stakeholders perceive as
responsible for ensuring data completeness and quality in the peer review
process. Our analysis revealed little consensus with regard to how data
archiving policies should be enforced and who should hold authors accountable
for dataset submissions. Themes in interviewee responses included hopefulness
that reviewers would take the initiative to review datasets and trust in
authors to ensure the completeness and quality of their datasets. We highlight
problematic aspects of these thematic responses and offer potential starting

Spitzer Constraints on the z=6.56 Galaxy Lensed by Abell 370
We report on Spitzer IRAC observations of the spectroscopically confirmed
z=6.56 lensed Ly-alpha emitting source HCM 6A which was found behind the
cluster Abell 370. Detection of the source at 3.6 and 4.5 microns,
corresponding to rest-frame optical emission, allows us to study the stellar
population of this primeval galaxy. The broadband flux density at 4.5 microns
is enhanced compared to the continuum at other wavelengths, likely due to the
presence of strong H-alpha in emission. The derived H-alpha line flux
corresponds to a star-formation rate of around 140 M_{sun}/yr, more than an
order of magnitude larger than estimates from the ultraviolet continuum and
Ly-alpha emission line. The dust extinction required to explain the discrepancy
is A_V of about 1 mag. The inference of dust at such high redshifts is
surprising and implies that the first epoch of star-formation in this galaxy

Real space investigation of structural changes at the metal-insulator transition in VO2
Synchrotron X-ray total scattering studies of structural changes in rutile
VO2 at the metal-insulator transition temperature of 340 K reveal that
monoclinic and tetragonal phases of VO2 coexist in equilibrium, as expected for
a first-order phase transition. No evidence for any distinct intermediate phase
is seen. Unbiased local structure studies of the changes in V--V distances
through the phase transition, using reverse Monte Carlo methods, support the
idea of phase coexistence and point to the high degree of correlation in the
dimerized low-temperature structure. No evidence for short range V--V
correlations that would be suggestive of local dimers is found in the metallic

Spin-induced symmetry breaking in orbitally ordered NiCr_2O_4 and CuCr_2O_4
At room temperature, the normal oxide spinels NiCr_2O_4 and CuCr_2O_4 are
tetragonally distorted and crystallize in the I4_1/amd space group due to
cooperative Jahn-Teller ordering driven by the orbital degeneracy of
tetrahedral Ni () and Cu (). Upon cooling, these
compounds undergo magnetic ordering transitions; interactions being somewhat
frustrated for NiCr_2O_4 but not for CuCr_2O_4. We employ variable-temperature
high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction to establish that at the
magnetic ordering temperatures there are further structural changes, which
result in both compounds distorting to an orthorhombic structure consistent
with the Fddd space group. NiCr_2O_4 exhibits additional distortion, likely
within the same space group, at a yet-lower transition temperature of = 30
K. The tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition in these compounds
appears to primarily involve changes in NiO_4 and CuO_4 tetrahedra
z ~ 4 Hα Emitters in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey: Tracing the Dominant Mode for Growth of Galaxies
We present evidence for strong Hα emission in galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the range of 3.8 10^(11) M_☉) galaxies at z ~ 3. This "strong Hα phase" of star formation plays a dominant role in galaxy growth at z ~ 4, and they are likely progenitors of massive red galaxies at lower redshifts
