    The Relationship between Sport Fan Dysfunction and Trait Aggression

    The current investigation was designed to examine the relationships among sport fandom, dysfunctional sport fandom, and trait aggression. Although past research had yielded inconsistent results (Wann et al., 1999, 2002), based on more recent research (Castleman et al., 2020) it was hypothesized that fan dysfunction would be a significant positive predictor of trait aggression while sport fandom would be a significant negative predictor of trait aggression. Additionally, we predicated that fan dysfunction would mediate the relationship between sport fandom and trait aggression. Analyses supported each hypothesis, indicating that once one takes into account the dysfunctional component of sport fandom, fandom predicts lower levels of aggression

    Simple proof of equivalence between adiabatic quantum computation and the circuit model

    We prove the equivalence between adiabatic quantum computation and quantum computation in the circuit model. An explicit adiabatic computation procedure is given that generates a ground state from which the answer can be extracted. The amount of time needed is evaluated by computing the gap.     Variation in Mating Dynamics across Five Species of Leiobunine Harvestmen (Arachnida: Opliones)

    The study of mating choices often focuses on correlates of traits to the overall outcome of a mating interaction. However, mating interactions can proceed through a series of stages, with opportunities for assessment at each stage. We compared whether male or female size predicted mating interaction outcome across several stages of mating in five species of North American leiobunine harvestmen (commonly known as daddy longlegs). Leiobunine harvestmen have been previously shown to exhibit incredible morphological diversity consistent with a spectrum of male–female antagonism. Across all of the species, we found a general progression of female size predicting the outcome (success and timing) of early stages of interactions, and male size or male size relative to female size predicting the outcome and timing of later stages of interactions. We also found that size was not a strong predictor of outcome in the two species on the lower end of the antagonism spectrum. The variation in how female and male size predicted outcomes across species and stages of mating suggests that multiple mechanisms may operate to shape mating dynamics within and across species. Given the close relatedness of the species studied, the patterns we uncovered suggest a rapid evolution of the traits and processes predicting the outcome of mating interactions

    The Role of Lower Leg Muscle Activity in Blood Pressure Maintenance of Older Adults

    Purpose. Age-associated muscle weakness, postural instability, and orthostatic hypotension have been identified as contributing factors to falls , but the relationships among them are not clear. Therefore, the purpose of this study, a two-way factorial design, was to investigate the differences in lower extremity (LE) muscle activity, blood pressure (BP), and heart rate (HR) between young and older individuals in an upright position. Methods. Ten young males (20-24 yrs.) and 10 older males (65-82 yrs.) stood for 15 minutes while BP, HR, and LE electromyography (EMG) were recorded at one minute intervals . A two-way ANOVA was used for data analysis , p=.05. Results. Mean arterial pressure of both groups significantly increased from supine values within one minute of standing (young = 86.5±1.68 to 96.9±3.16 mmHg, old = 100.3±4.42 to 114.0±5.40 mmHg). BP variables remained elevated during the 15 minutes of standing despite a significantly attenuated HR response in the older group (young = 85±4.51 bpm, old = 73±3.98 bpm). Standing EMG activity of the older group was significantly greater than the young group. Conclusion. This study suggests that increased LE muscle activity may play a role in the ability of older individuals to maintain BP in the standing position

    Assessing and Improving the Ecological Function of Linear Parks Along the Lower Los Angeles River Channel, Los Angeles County, California, US

    Long overlooked by conservation groups and ecologists, urban open spaces are now seen as important contributors to biodiversity at various scales. Urban greenspaces often represent the only “nature” millions of human residents around the world ever interact with, and provide cooling and aesthetic relief from the urban hardscape. In the Los Angeles Metropolitan area, over the past three decades, non-profit advocacy groups and institutions have established a network of bike paths, neighborhood access points, habitat restoration, and recreational amenities along the Los Angeles River, a major urban waterway. We investigated the environmental contribution provided by numerous linear landscaped parks along the river, focusing on climate amelioration (i.e., cooling within heat islands) in the parks and surrounding neighborhoods, and on their contribution to local biodiversity, utilizing an indicator species approach. We conducted plant surveys of the parks, documenting locally native, non-local California native, and non-native species, and examined the occurrence of 15 riparian indicator species of wildlife in the parks and in 500-meter buffer zones surrounding each park utilizing citizen science data. We then explore correlations between indicator species richness and environmental variables. We note important occurrences of relict riparian vegetation in several linear parks, as well as both planted and naturally-occurring special-status plant and wildlife species. Finally, we discuss challenges to managing natural habitat in highly-urban parks, many of which support important relict vegetation and/or special-status species, and offer suggestions on how they may be improved

    Si microwire-array solar cells

    Si microwire-array solar cells with Air Mass 1.5 Global conversion efficiencies of up to 7.9% have been fabricated using an active volume of Si equivalent to a 4 ÎĽm thick Si wafer. These solar cells exhibited open-circuit voltages of 500 mV, short-circuit current densities (J_(sc)) of up to 24 mA cm^(-2), and fill factors >65% and employed Al_2O_3 dielectric particles that scattered light incident in the space between the wires, a Ag back reflector that prevented the escape of incident illumination from the back surface of the solar cell, and an a-SiN_x:H passivation/anti-reflection layer. Wire-array solar cells without some or all of these design features were also fabricated to demonstrate the importance of the light-trapping elements in achieving a high J_(sc). Scanning photocurrent microscopy images of the microwire-array solar cells revealed that the higher J_(sc) of the most advanced cell design resulted from an increased absorption of light incident in the space between the wires. Spectral response measurements further revealed that solar cells with light-trapping elements exhibited improved red and infrared response, as compared to solar cells without light-trapping elements

    Self-report of difficult defecation is associated with overactive bladder symptoms

    Aims The association of dysfunctional bowel elimination with lower urinary tract symptoms is well known in children, but not in adults. It was our objective to assess lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in women who report difficult defecation (DD). Methods This is a secondary analysis of 2,812 women, aged 35–64, who participated in a telephone interview. All subjects were asked “When you move your bowels, does the stool come out easily?” DD was considered present in those answering “no.” All subjects were queried regarding LUTS, urinary infections in the past year, self-perceived health status, medical history, and demographics. Symptoms of stress incontinence (five items), urge incontinence (five items), and the impact of these symptoms on their quality of life were solicited from subjects reporting more than 12 episodes of incontinence in 1 year. Results DD was reported by 10.4% (290/2,790) of women. Women with DD had higher LUTS than those who did not: nocturia (mean 1.8 ± 0.1 vs. 1.3 ± 0.0), urgency (47.6% vs. 29.2%), increased daytime frequency (mean 8.2 ± 0.3 vs. 7.2 ± 0.1), dysuria (22.9% vs. 13.7%), and a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying (55.6% vs. 28.2%). DD women were more often menopausal, reported a fair or poor self-reported health status, and had a higher number of comorbidities, less formal education, and lower annual household income. Conclusions Women with symptoms of DD have an increased rate of LUTS, consistent with the diagnosis of overactive bladder without incontinence. The pathophysiology underlying this association is worthy of future research. Neurourol.     Real time monitoring of biofilm formation on coated medical devices for the reduction and interception of bacterial infections

    Real time monitoring of bacterial attachment to medical devices provides opportunities to detect early biofilm formation and instigate appropriate interventions before infection develops. This study utilises long period grating (LPG) optical fibre sensors, incorporated into the lumen of endotracheal tubes (ETTs), to monitor in real time, Pseudomonas aeruginosa surface colonisation and biofilm formation. The wavelength shift of LPG attenuation bands was monitored for 24 h and compared with biofilm biomass, quantified using confocal fluorescence microscopy imaging. Biofilm formation was compared on uncoated ETTs and optical fibres, and on a biofilm resistant acrylate polymer, after challenge in an artificial sputum or minimal growth medium (RPMI-1640). The LPG sensor was able to detect a biofilm biomass as low as 81 µg/cm 2 , by comparison with the confocal image quantification. An empirical exponential function was found to the link optical attenuation wavelength shift with the inverse of the biofilm biomass, allowing quantification of biofouling from the spectral response. Quantification from the sensor allows infection interception and early device removal, to reduce, for example, the risk of ventilator associated pneumonia
