    Laser-controlled adaptive optic for beam quality enhancement in a multipass thin disk amplifier

    We devise a laser-controlled adaptive optical element which operates intracavity under high intensity radiation. This element substitutes a conventional mechanically deformable mirror and is free of critical heat-sensitive components and electronics. The deformation mechanism is based on the projection of a CW control laser onto a specially designed mirror. Mounted to a water-cooled heat sink, the mirror can handle laser radiation beyond 3 MW/cm^2. The properties of the adaptive optical element including the maximum correctable wavefront pitch of 800 nm are discussed. The successful implementation in a multipass thin disk amplifier is presented. An improvement of the beam quality by a factor of three is achieved. We identify measures to enhance the performance of the adaptive optic towards efficient operation in a high-power laser system

    Triple resonant four-wavemixing boosts the yield of continuous coherent VUV generation

    Continuous-wave coherent radiation in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)wavelength region at 121 nm will be essential for future laser-cooling of trapped antihydrogen [1]. Cold antihydrogen will enable both tests of the fundamental symmetry between matter and antimatter at unprecedented experimental precision [2] and also experiments in antimatter gravity [3]. Another fascinating application of narrowband continuous laser radiation in the VUV is quantum information processing using single trapped ions in Rydberg-states [4, 5]. Here we describe highly efficient continuous four-wave mixing in the VUV by using three different fundamental wavelengths with a sophisticated choice of detunings to resonances of the nonlinear medium. Up to 6 microwatts of vacuum ultraviolet radiation at 121 nm can be generated which corresponds to an increase of three orders of magnitude in efficiency.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

    Business Models for Internet of Things Platforms: Empirical Development of a Taxonomy and Archetypes

    A wide range of Internet of Things platform providers operate diverse business models to cater for the manifold requirements of the IoT. This paper contributes to a more precise understanding of IoT platforms as an essential building block of the IoT based on the characteristics of its business models. Even though research listing technological dimensions according to which IoT platforms differ, they have neither been systematically derived nor been linked to the business model concept. In turn, they lack descriptive power on the heterogeneous value creation mechanisms of the platform providers. Within our research, we first analyzed 195 IoT platforms and systemically developed a taxonomy allowing the characterization of IoT platform business models. Second, based on this taxonomy, we identified nine archetypes of IoT platform business models and illustrated typical combinations of business model characteristics. Equipped with such an understanding, practice and research can analyze existing IoT platforms more accurately

    Cerebral Hemodynamic Failure Presenting as Limb-Shaking Transient Ischemic Attacks

    Limb-shaking transient ischemic attacks (TIA) may occur in patients with insufficient brain perfusion due to an underlying occlusive disease. We present the case of a 64-year-old patient who suffered from repetitive TIA presenting with shaking movements of the right-sided extremities and accompanying speech arrest. Symptoms are documented in the online supplementary video (www.karger.com/doi/10.1159/000327683). These episodes were frequently triggered in orthostatic situations. The diagnosis of limb-shaking TIA was established. The diagnostic workup revealed pseudo-occlusion of the left internal carotid artery, a poor intracranial collateral status and, as a consequence, an exhausted vasomotor reserve capacity. At ultrasound examination, symptoms were provoked by a change of the patient's position from supine to sitting. During evolvement of symptoms, a dramatic decrease of flow velocities in the left middle cerebral artery was observed. This case thus documents the magnitude and dynamics of perfusion failure in a rare manifestation of cerebral ischemic disease

    Previous IS research analyzing the adoption of digital innovations has not yet distinguished between digital natives and digital immigrants. Thus, there is still a limited understanding of the special needs regarding digital innovation design and the adoption behavior of individuals identified as digital natives. Therefore, we used a motivational theory perspective from psychological studies to examine the individual needs of digital natives concerning the design of a digital innovation. We conducted a mental simulation experiment with 637 participants. Our findings shed light on the importance of digital nativeness as a predictor of attitudes towards using digital innovations, and the relevance of applying socio-psychological design principles for developing digital innovations

    Influence of the 6^1S_0-6^3P_1 Resonance on Continuous Lyman-alpha Generation in Mercury

    Continuous coherent radiation in the vacuum-ultraviolet at 122 nm (Lyman-alpha) can be generated using sum-frequency mixing of three fundamental laser beams in mercury vapour. One of the fundamental beams is at 254 nm wavelength, which is close to the 6^1S_0-6^3P_1 resonance in mercury. Experiments have been performed to investigate the effect of this one-photon resonance on phasematching, absorption and the nonlinear yield. The efficiency of continuous Lyman-alpha generation has been improved by a factor of 4.5.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

    Ancient DNA reveals differences in behaviour and sociality between brown bears and extinct cave bears

    Ancient DNA studies have revolutionized the study of extinct species and populations, providing insights on phylogeny, phylogeography, admixture and demographic history. However, inferences on behaviour and sociality have been far less frequent. Here, we investigate the complete mitochondrial genomes of extinct Late Pleistocene cave bears and middle Holocene brown bears that each inhabited multiple geographically proximate caves in northern Spain. In cave bears, we find that, although most caves were occupied simultaneously, each cave almost exclusively contains a unique lineage of closely related haplotypes. This remarkable pattern suggests extreme fidelity to their birth site in cave bears, best described as homing behaviour, and that cave bears formed stable maternal social groups at least for hibernation. In contrast, brown bears do not show any strong association of mitochondrial lineage and cave, suggesting that these two closely related species differed in aspects of their behaviour and sociality. This difference is likely to have contributed to cave bear extinction, which occurred at a time in which competition for caves between bears and humans was likely intense and the ability to rapidly colonize new hibernation sites would have been crucial for the survival of a species so dependent on caves for hibernation as cave bears. Our study demonstrates the potential of ancient DNA to uncover patterns of behaviour and sociality in ancient species and populations, even those that went extinct many tens of thousands of years ago

    We demonstrate a reliable continuous-wave (cw) laser source at the 1\,SS--2\,PP transition in (anti)hydrogen at 121.56\,nm (Lyman-α\alpha) based on four-wave sum-frequency mixing in mercury.
