    Protecting U.S. Intellectual Property Rights and the Challenges of Digital Piracy

    According to U.S. industry and government officials, intellectual property rights (IPR) infringement has reached critical levels in the United States as well as abroad. The speed and ease with which the duplication of products protected by IPR can occur has created an urgent need for industries and governments alike to address the protection of IPR in order to keep markets open to trade in the affected goods. Copyrighted products such as software, movies, music and video recordings, and other media products have been particularly affected by inadequate IPR protection. New tools, such as writable compact discs (CDs) and, of course, the Internet have made duplication not only effortless and low-cost, but anonymous as well. This paper discusses the merits of IPR protection and its importance to the U.S. economy. It then provides background on various technical, legal, and trade policy methods that have been employed to control the infringement of IPR domestically and internationally. This is followed by an analysis of current and future challenges facing U.S. industry with regard to IPR protection, particularly the challenges presented by the Internet and digital piracy.Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,

    Relative status and well-being: evidence from U.S. suicide deaths

    This paper empirically assesses the theory of interpersonal income comparison using individual level data on suicide deaths in the United States. We model suicide as a choice variable, conditional on exogenous risk factors, reflecting an individual's assessment of current and expected future utility. Our empirical analysis considers whether suicide risk is systematically related to the income of others, holding own income and other individual factors fixed. We estimate proportional hazards and probit models of the suicide hazard using two separate and independent data sets: (1) the National Longitudinal Mortality Study and (2) the Detailed Mortality Files combined with the 5 percent Public Use Micro Sample of the 1990 decennial census. Results from both data sources show that, controlling for own income and individual characteristics, individual suicide risk rises with reference group income. This result holds for reference groups defined broadly, such as by county, and more narrowly by county and one demographic marker (e.g., age, sex, race). These findings are robust to alternative specifications and cannot be explained by geographic variation in cost of living, access to emergency medical care, mismeasurement of deaths by suicide, or by bias due to endogeneity of own income.     Recreating Traditional Japan in Brinkley\u27s \u3cem\u3eJapan, Described and Illustrated by the Japanese\u3c/em\u3e

    In 1897-98, Francis Brinkley edited the ten volume set Japan, Described and Illustrated by the Japanese, Written by Eminent Japanese Authorities and Scholars. Brinkley (1841-1912) was an Irish sea captain who resided in Japan for over forty years, spoke and wrote fluent Japanese, was the editor of Japan Mail, an influential English-language newspaper. Published by J. B. Millet Company in Boston and Tokyo, the books were produced for the American and European markets and were a great financial success. Published in several sizes, from cheap editions illustrated with black and white reproductions to folio sized editions bound in silk and embellished with hand colored albumin photographs, collotypes, and woodblocks. It is uncertain who wrote the text, but some of the images are attributed to Kazumasa Ogawa, a pioneer Japanese photographer. In my paper, I will argue that these volumes reinforced the superficial romantic views about Japan that many westerners held. To substantiate this claim, I will juxtapose images produced by Brinkley with those created at the same time by Japanese artists for domestic audiences. In my analysis, I will extrapolate Said’s Orientalism to the case of Japan and will discuss its Eurocentric portrayal in Brinkley’s volumes. I will argue that while being esthetically pleasing, Brinkley’s books cashed in on the Japan craze and promoted the notion that non-western societies still existed in pre-modern conditions

    First Observational Tests of Eternal Inflation

    The eternal inflation scenario predicts that our observable Universe resides inside a single bubble embedded in a vast inflating multiverse. We present the first observational tests of eternal inflation, performing a search for cosmological signatures of collisions with other bubble universes in cosmic microwave background data from the WMAP satellite. We conclude that the WMAP 7-year data do not warrant augmenting the cold dark matter model with a cosmological constant with bubble collisions, constraining the average number of detectable bubble collisions on the full sky N̅ _s<1.6 at 68% C.L. Data from the Planck satellite can be used to more definitively test the bubble-collision hypothesis

    Improvements to the missile aerodynamic prediction code DEMON3

    The computer program DEMON3 was developed for the aerodynamic analysis of nonconventional supersonic configurations comprising a body with noncircular cross section and up to two wing or fin sections. Within a wing or fin section, the lifting surfaces may be cruciform, triform, planar, or low profile layouts; the planforms of the lifting surfaces allow for breaks in sweep. The body and fin sections are modeled by triplet and constant u-velocity panels, respectively, accounting for mutual body-fin interference. Fin thickness effects are included for the use of supersonic planar source panels. One of the unique features of DEMON3 is the modeling of high angle of attack vortical effects associated with the lifting surfaces and the body. In addition, shock expansion and Newtonian pressure calculation methods can be optionally engaged. These two dimensional nonlinear methods are augmented by aerodynamic interference determined from the linear panel methods. Depending on the geometric details of the body, the DEMON3 program can be used to analyze nonconventional configurations at angles of attack up to 25 degrees for Mach numbers from 1.1 to 6. Calculative results and comparisons with experimental data demonstrate the capabilities of DEMON3. Limitations and deficiencies are listed
