A Simple Approach to Preventing the Next Housing Crisis-Why We Need ONe, What One Would Look Like, and Why Dodd-Frank Isn\u27t It

This article considers the adequacy of The Dodd-Frank Act in terms of its potential ability to prevent another crisis in the housing market. The author argues that Dodd-Frank, even if implemented broadly, will not address the key problem of excess complexity in the housing and financial markets. The author then suggests additional reform focusing on simplicity, exemplified by the existing regulatory framework in Denmark. Lastly, the author addresses the current political economy, which is blamed for making the passage of effective regulation too difficult

Finding new music: a diary study of everyday encounters with novel songs

This paper explores how we, as individuals, purposefully or serendipitously encounter 'new music' (that is, music that we haven’t heard before) and relates these behaviours to music information retrieval activities such as music searching and music discovery via use of recommender systems. 41 participants participated in a three-day diary study, in which they recorded all incidents that brought them into contact with new music. The diaries were analyzed using a Grounded Theory approach. The results of this analysis are discussed with respect to location, time, and whether the music encounter was actively sought or occurred passively. Based on these results, we outline design implications for music information retrieval software, and suggest an extension of 'laid back' searching

Finance, Human Capital, Technical Assistance, and the Business Environment in Romania

Although the development of a new private sector is generally considered crucial to economic transition and development, there has been little empirical research on the determinants of startup firm growth. This paper uses panel data techniques to analyze a survey of 297 new small enterprises in Romania containing detailed information from the startup date through 2001. We find strong evidence that access to external finance (loans) increases the growth of both employment and sales. Taxes appear to constrain growth. There is some evidence that entrepreneurial skills increase growth, but only weak evidence for the effectiveness of technical assistance, and only when it is provided by foreign partners or international agencies. A wide variety of alternative measures of the business environment (contract enforcement, property rights, and corruption) are tested, but are found to have little or no association with firm growth.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/40025/3/wp639.pd
