Dynamical generation of dark solitons in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates
We numerically investigate the ground state, the Raman-driving dynamics and
the nonlinear excitations of a realized spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein
condensate in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. Depending on the Raman coupling
and the interatomic interactions, three ground-state phases are identified:
stripe, plane wave and zero-momentum phases. A narrow parameter regime with
coexistence of stripe and zero-momentum or plane wave phases in real space is
found. Several sweep progresses across different phases by driving the Raman
coupling linearly in time is simulated and the non-equilibrium dynamics of the
system in these sweeps are studied. We find kinds of nonlinear excitations,
with the particular dark solitons excited in the sweep from the stripe phase to
the plane wave or zero-momentum phase within the trap. Moreover, the number and
the stability of the dark solitons can be controlled in the driving, which
provide a direct and easy way to generate dark solitons and study their
dynamics and interaction properties.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figur
Callisto: a cryptographic approach to detecting serial perpetrators of sexual misconduct
Sexual misconduct is prevalent in workplace and education settings
but stigma and risk of further damage deter many victims from
seeking justice. Callisto, a non-profit that has created an online sexual assault reporting platform for college campuses, is expanding its
work to combat sexual assault and harassment in other industries.
In this new product, users will be invited to an online "matching
escrow" that will detect repeat perpetrators and create pathways
to support for victims. Users submit encrypted data about their
perpetrator, and this data can only be decrypted by the Callisto
Options Counselor (a lawyer), when another user enters the identity of the same perpetrator. If the perpetrator identities match,
both users will be put in touch independently with the Options
Counselor, who will connect them to each other (if appropriate) and
help them determine their best path towards justice. The client relationships with the Options Counselors are structured so that any
client-counselor communications would be privileged. A combination of client-side encryption, encrypted communication channels,
oblivious pseudo-random functions, key federation, and Shamir
Secret Sharing keep data confidential in transit, at rest, and during
the matching process with the guarantee that only the lawyer ever
has access to user submitted data, and even then only when a match

Quality of Teacher’s Life: Why do teachers leave the profession?
In China, the number of private higher education institutions (HEIs) has been increasing rapidly in recent times. However, an upward trend is noticed among teachers leaving the HEIs.  As teachers’ life constitutes both personal and work life, this micro-level study paper examines 100 teacher turnover decisions by examining personal and institution factors based on the Two-Factor Theory. Using ANOVA and independent-t-test, it examines how teacher’s demographic factors affect their decision to leave the institution. The study hopes to contribute to policymakers understanding on teacher turnover so as to mitigate this phenomenon by improving their job satisfaction and quality of life.

Barrier Inhomogeneity of Schottky Diode on Nonpolar AlN Grown by Physical Vapor Transport
An aluminum nitride (AlN) Schottky barrier diode (SBD) was fabricated on a
nonpolar AlN crystal grown on tungsten substrate by physical vapor transport.
The Ni/Au-AlN SBD features a low ideality factor n of 3.3 and an effective
Schottky barrier height (SBH) of 1.05 eV at room temperature. The ideality
factor n decreases and the effective SBH increases at high temperatures. The
temperature dependences of n and SBH were explained using an inhomogeneous
model. A mean SBH of 2.105 eV was obtained for the Ni-AlN Schottky junction
from the inhomogeneity analysis of the current-voltage characteristics. An
equation in which the parameters have explicit physical meanings in thermionic
emission theory is proposed to describe the current-voltage characteristics of
inhomogeneous SBDs.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
