Effect of Parenteral Vitamin E and/or A on Reproductive Performance of Ewes Mated on Pasture or in Drylot

Forty-four Hampshire (H) and 41 Suffolk (S) ewes were allotted within breed to one of four treatment groups (VitA, VitE, VitAE, and Control) to evaluate the effect of supplemental vitamin E and A on reproductive performance of ewes mated on pasture or in drylot. Beginning two weeks before the mating period, ewes received 0 or 300 IU of vitamin E every 14 days and 0 or 250,000 IU of vitamin A every 28 days. Hampshire ewes remained on pasture during the mating period, whereas S ewes were moved to drylot. Treatment did not affect ovulation rate (OR), embryonic loss (EL), fetal loss (FL) or litter size (LS) of H ewes. Embryonic loss was higher (P\u3c.05) in the H yearlings and two-year olds than in older ewes. Litter size was lower (P\u3c.01) for H yearlings compared with other age groups. Suffolk ewes in the VitE group exhibited a lower (P\u3c.01) OR than S ewes in other treatment groups, but no effect of treatment was observed for EL, FL, or LS. Although S yearling ewes did not differ from ewes of other age groups for OR and EL, they did produce fewer (P\u3c.05) lambs. Analysis of serum samples revealed that H yearling ewes exhibited lower (P\u3c.05) serum a-tocopherol levels than older H ewes. In addition, H ewes had a higher (P\u3c.05) serum a-tocopherol level than S ewes at the beginning of study when they were managed as one group. Even though age and breed influenced certain reproductive parameters, results of this study indicate little effect of supplemental vitamin E and A on the overall reproductive efficiency of ewes mated on pasture or in drylot

    New-New Trade Policy

When national competitiveness is invoked as a policy objective, trade experts have learned to retort that countries don`t trade, firms do. This focus on the importance of the firm in international trade is consistent with the most recent developments in trade theory, but policy needs to catch up. Recognizing the growing anomalies in observed trade patterns relative to traditional models of trade based on national comparative advantage, the "new trade theory" of the 1980s looked at industries not countries, leading Nobel prize-winner Paul Krugman, a pioneer in this literature, to suggest the need for a new trade policy. Recent work on what some call the "new-new trade theory" focuses on the trading behaviour of individual firms, making a tight link between trade and productivity. In this paper we demonstrate how focusing on firms should be the foundation for a new-new trade policy, one that creates exciting opportunities for trade and investment promotion strategies, along with the need for much more targeted consultation strategies. We also discuss the implications of the new-new theory for regulatory coordination, and on new ways to cooperate with interlocutors in developing countries on the evolution of 21st century trade policy.New-new Trade Theory, Trade Policy

2018 Watermelon Variety Evaluation in Indiana

This is a compilation of 20 research trial reports from four land-grant universities in the Midwestern United States. Crops include cantaloupe, pickling cucumber, pepper, potato, pumpkin, summer squash and zucchini, sweet corn, tomato, and watermelon. Somecrops were evaluated in high tunnels or hoophouses. Most trials evaluated different cultivars or varieties. One report addressed plant spacing for sweet corn and one addressed soil block for production of tomato seedlings. A list of vegetable seed sources and a list of other online sources of vegetable trial reports are also included

National Preferences in Business and Communication Education: A Survey Update

    Get PDF
This article discusses the results of a survey in the U.S. regarding national preferences in business and communication education. From the results of this and the previous study, it appears that the skills most valued in the contemporary job-entry market are communication skills. The skills of listening, oral communication (both interpersonal and public), written communication and the trait of enthusiasm are indicated to be the most important. Again, it would appear to follow that university officials wishing to be of the greatest help to their graduates in finding employment would make sure that basic competencies in oral and written communication are developed. Courses in listening, interpersonal, and public communication would form the basis of meeting the oral communication competencies. One way to meet the written communication expectation would be to include courses in rhetorical and business writing. Further, training in interviewing skills would be in order to help university graduates maximize their appearance and personality projection as well as gather information necessary for appropriate decision making

The average profitability of beef cow herds evaluated by the South Dakota Farm Business Management group has ranged from 201profitin1987to201 profit in 1987 to 104 profit per cow in 1993. Average total costs per cow in a pasture drylot have increased from 180in1986to180 in 1986 to 310 in 1993. Average total cow costs of range run have increased from 166in1986to1 66 in 1986 to 302 in 1993. High profit herds in both range run and pasture drylot had lower 8-year average total costs, 264/cowdrylothighprofitcomparedto264/cow drylot high profit compared to 272 drylot average (-3%) and 252/cowrangehighprofitcomparedto252/ cow range high profit compared to 264 range average (-4.5%).
