Early Life Health and Adult Earnings: Evidence from a Large Sample of Siblings and Twins

    Get PDF
We study the relationship between early life health and adult earnings using a unique dataset that covers almost the entire population of Swedish males born between 1950 and 1970. The health information is obtained from medical examinations during the mandatory military enlistment tests at age 18, which we have further linked to register data on adult earnings. We find that most types of major diagnoses have long-run effects on future earnings with the largest effects resulting from mental conditions. Including sibling fixed effects or twin-pair fixed effects reduces the magnitudes of the estimates, although remaining substantial.earnings, health, specific conditions, siblings, twins

Does Early Life Health Predict Schooling Within Twin Pairs?

    Get PDF
A large number of studies in labor economics estimate the returns to schooling using data on monozygotic twins, under the assumption that educational attainment is random within twin pairs. This exogeneity assumption has been commonly questioned, however, but there is to date little evidence on the topic. Using a large dataset of twins, including comprehensive information on their health status at the age of 18 and later educational attainment, we investigate whether educational attainment is related to early health status within monozygotic twin pairs. In general, we obtain no indication of this being so. As a result, we find little evidence that early health differences between twins would bias the estimates of the returns to schooling available in the literature.twins, twin-fixed effects, schooling, returns to schooling, ability bias, health

Optimal On-line Sampling Period Assignment for Real-Time Control Tasks Based on Plant State Information

    Get PDF
The paper presents a feedback scheduling strategy for multiple control tasks that uses feedback from the plant states to distribute the computing resources optimally among the tasks. Linear-quadratic controllers are analyzed, and expressions relating the expected cost to the sampling period and the plant state are derived and used for on-line sample-rate adjustments. In the case of minimum-variance control of multiple integrator processes, an exact expression for the optimal sampling periods is obtained. For the general case, an on-line optimization procedure is developed. The approach is exemplified on a set of controllers for first-order systems. The issues of computational delay and the choice of the feedback scheduler period are also discussed

TinyRealTime - An EDF Kernel for the Atmel ATmega8L AVR

    Get PDF
This report describes the design and implementation of {TinyRealTime}, an event-based real-time kernel for the Atmel AVR ATmega8L 8-bit micro-controller. The kernel is event-based and supports fully preemptive earliest-deadline-first scheduling of tasks. Semaphores are provided to support task synchronization. The focus of the report is on the memory management, timing, and internal workings of the kernel. The flash memory footprint of the kernel is approximately 1200 bytes and it occupies 11 bytes of SRAM memory for the kernel data structure plus an additional 11 bytes for each task and one byte for each semaphore. An application example is described, where the real-time kernel is used to implement concurrent control of two ball and beam laboratory processes using six application tasks

    ICMI 2012 chairs' welcome

    Get PDF
Welcome to Santa Monica and to the 14th edition of the International Conference on Multimodal Interaction, ICMI 2012. ICMI is the premier international forum for multidisciplinary research on multimodal human-human and human-computer interaction, interfaces, and system development. We had a record number of submissions this year: 147 (74 long papers, 49 short papers, 5 special session papers and 19 demo papers). From these submissions, we accepted 15 papers for long oral presentation (20.3% acceptance rate), 10 papers for short oral presentation (20.4% acceptance rate) and 19 papers presented as posters. We have a total acceptance rate of 35.8% for all short and long papers. 12 of the 19 demo papers were accepted. All 5 special session papers were directly invited by the organizers and the papers were all accepted. In addition, the program includes three invited Keynote talks. One of the two novelties introduced at ICMI this year is the Multimodal Grand Challenges. Developing systems that can robustly understand human-human communication or respond to human input requires identifying the best algorithms and their failure modes. In fields such as computer vision, speech recognition, and computational linguistics, the availability of datasets and common tasks have led to great progress. This year, we accepted four challenge workshops: the Audio-Visual Emotion Challenge (AVEC), the Haptic Voice Recognition challenge, the D-META challenge and Brain-Computer Interface challenge. Stefanie Telex and Daniel Gatica-Perez are co-chairing the grand challenge this year. All four Grand Challenges will be presented on Monday, October 22nd, and a summary session will be happening on Wednesday, October 24th, afternoon during the main conference. The second novelty at ICMI this year is the Doctoral Consortium—a separate, one-day event to take place on Monday, October 22nd, co-chaired by Bilge Mutlu and Carlos Busso. The goal of the Doctoral Consortium is to provide Ph.D. students with an opportunity to present their work to a group of mentors and peers from a diverse set of academic and industrial backgrounds and institutions, to receive feedback on their doctoral research plan and progress, and to build a cohort of young researchers interested in designing multimodal interfaces. All accepted students receive a travel grant to attend the conference. From among 25 applications, 14 students were accepted for participation and to receive travel funding. The organizers thank the National Science Foundation (award IIS-1249319) and conference sponsors for financial support

Limit shapes for skew Howe duality

We study large random partitions boxed into a rectangle and coming from skew Howe duality, or alternatively from dual Schur measures. As the sides of the rectangle go to infinity, we obtain: 1) limit shape results for the profiles generalizing the Vershik--Kerov--Logan--Shepp curve; and 2) universal edge asymptotic results for the first parts in the form of the Tracy--Widom distribution, as well as less-universal critical regime results introduced by Gravner, Tracy and Widom. We do this for a large class of Schur parameters going beyond the Plancherel or principal specializations previously studied in the literature, parametrized by two real valued functions ff and gg. Connections to a Bernoulli model of (last passage) percolation are explored.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, extended abstrac
