Winner, Loser, or Innocent Victim? Has Renewable Energy Performed As Expected?

This study provides an evaluation of the performance of five renewable energy technologies used to generate electricity: biomass, geothermal, solar photovoltaics, solar thermal, and wind. The authors compared the actual performance of these technologies against stated projections that helped shape public policy goals over the last three decades. Their findings document a significant difference between the success of renewable technologies in penetrating the U.S. electricity generation market and in meeting cost-related goals, when compared with historic projections. In general, renewable technologies have failed to meet expectations with respect to market penetration. They have succeeded, however, in meeting or exceeding expectations with respect to their cost. To a significant degree, the difference in performance in meeting projections of penetration and cost stem from the declining price of conventional generation, which constitutes a moving baseline against which renewable technologies have had to compete.

Northern Bobwhite Habitat Modeling on a Military Installation in Relation to Red-Cockaded Woodpecker Management

The Department of Defense (DoD) manages natural resources on ~ 8 million ha of land. A top priority for much of this land is to restore and maintain native ecosystems and associated wildlife species. However, given the typical location (i.e., threatened ecosystems) and size of DoD lands, management conflicts usually occur among endangered/threatened species and game species. Military installations in the southeastern United States are commonly managed to protect red-cockaded woodpecker (Piciodes borealis) (RCW) populations and longleaf-wiregrass ecosystems. Mandated RCW management is not entirely compatible with other declining species such as northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus). Land managers need to be equipped with spatially-explicit habitat models that can be used to make informed decisions on how to manage for particular species. Data collected on Fort Gordon Military Installation, Georgia from male bobwhite whistle counts during summer 2010 and 2011 will be used to construct competing models on the relationship between RCW management and other habitat structure metrics as it relates to bobwhite habitat suitability. These data were collected using a robust occupancy sampling design to allow open and closed population assumptions. Preliminary data suggests the RCW habitat ranking matrix is a poor predictor of bobwhite habitat suitability and, more alarmingly, RCW population performance. These models will assist natural resource managers on DoD land in making efficient decisions in the face of uncertainty

Front-Line Employees’ Recognition And Empowerment Effect On Retail Bank Customers’ Perceived Value

Understanding how front-line bank employee recognition and empowerment impacts customer value is an important issue for the banking industry. Retail banking customers perceive little difference in services as competition has created more choices. When banks develop new products, they are easily duplicated by the competition. Banks can gain a competitive advantage by understanding the interrelationships that impact customers perceived value. The major providers of customer perceived value in retail banking are front-line employees. This research aims to better understand these interrelationships and examine how front-line retail bank employee recognition and empowerment relate to retail bank customer perceived value. Customers perceived value is defined in terms of relationship, social, emotional, service and empowerment. Survey findings illustrate that retail banks should concentrate more on employee recognition and empowerment to impact customers perceived value. According to the findings of the survey, front-line employee recognition and empowerment has a positive impact on customers perceived value
