    Measuring eGovernment Portal Management on the Local Level: Results from a Survey of Public Administration Officials

    Given the importance of eGovernment portals as an integral access interface of modern public service provision, this contribution concentrates on the issue of the dimensions and derived success factors of these information systems. Starting with the DeLone & McLean IS success model and the resource-based view as foundations, this article conceptualizes the important success factors of eGovernment portals and then integrates these into a research model. The empirical results show the importance of the different dimensions of eGovernment Portal Management as well as the development of eGovernment portals so far. For public service portals on the local level the key management dimensions are information, system, service and privacy management. The evaluation of these dimensions as well as perceived internal and external success in public administration institutions complement user-based quality assessments and highlight organizational strengths and weaknesses

    Business Model Innovation: An Integrative Conceptual Framework

    Purpose: The point of departure of this exploratory study is the gap between the increasing importance of business model innovation (BMI) in science and management and the limited conceptual assistance available. Therefore, the study identi es and explores scattered BMI insights and deduces them into an integrative framework to enhance our understanding about this phenomenon and to present a helpful guidance for researchers and practitioners. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study identi es BMI insights through a literature-based investigation and consolidates them into an integrative BMI framework that presents the key elements and dimensions of BMI as well as their presumed relationships. Findings: The study enhances our understanding about the key elements and dimensions of BMI, presents further conceptual insights into the BMI phenomenon, supplies implications for science and management, and may serve as a helpful guidance for future research. Practical Implications: The presented framework provides managers with a tool to identify critical BMI issues and can serve as a conceptual BMI guideline. Research limitations: Given the vast amount of academic journals, it is unlikely that every applicable scienti c publication is included in the analysis. The illustrative examples are descriptive in nature, and thus do not provide empirical validity. Several implications for future research are provided. Originality/Value: The study’s main contribution lies in the unifying approach of the dispersed BMI knowledge. Since our understanding of BMI is still limited, this study should provide the necessary insights and conceptual assistance to further develop the concept and guide its practical application.

    Business Model Innovation Processes: A Systematic Literature Review

    Purpose: The starting point of this study is the heterogeneously dispersed knowledge on the business model innovation (BMI) process. To accelerate the development of this topic in research and practice, the study ex- plores insights concerning the BMI process to enhance our understanding about this phenomenon and to present a helpful guidance for researchers and practitioners. Design/Methodology/Approach: Given the study design (systematic review), we conducted a literature- based investigation to identify important insights on the BMI process in the literature and derive a generic BMI process from the findings. Findings: Our findings underline the heterogeneous structure of BMI process knowledge in the literature. Furthermore, we could detect several content-related and scope-related differences between existing BMI processes and derive seven generic BMI process steps: Analysis, Ideation, Feasibility, Prototyping, Decision- making, Implementation, and Sustainability. Practical Implications: The literature review provides researchers and practitioners with a clear guidance on the BMI process literature and the seven generic BMI process phases serve as a blueprint for BMI initiatives in research and management. Research Limitations: Given the amount of academic journals, it is unlikely that every applicable scientific publication is included.     Business Model Development: A Customer-Oriented Perspective

    Managers are increasingly confronted with environmental disruptions and changing customer preferences that require continuous business model development. Given this situation, it is surprising that there is only a limited understanding of business model development that builds upon customer-orientation. Therefore, this study presents a framework for customer-oriented business model development. The findings underline the importance of customer-orientation and suggest the use of customized customer-oriented development sets for a systematic approach that takes into account distinctive customer groups, business model change intensity, and business model development types. The presented framework provides fruitful avenues for future research and valuable guidance for management

    Business Model Innovation: Development, Concept and Future Research Directions

    Purpose: Although business model innovation (BMI) has gained substantial importance in recent years, there is still a limited understanding of this phenomenon. Yet, the corresponding scholarly literature has previously been characterized by a heterogeneous comprehension of the concept. This situation demands an analysis that synthesizes current scienti c knowledge, uncovers research gaps and underdeveloped areas, and estab- lishes a solid foundation for future research. Design: The study applies an extensive quantitative and qualitative analysis of extant BMI literature, making the concept more transparent and manageable for science and management. Findings: The study presents a set of yielding de nitions of the extant BMI literature and an integrated de ni- tion to promote a common understanding of BMI. In addition, it classi es the eld into six particular research areas. Given the identi ed dominance of exploratory research designs, future research should put more em- phasis on well-founded conceptual articles that stabilize and consolidate basic research as well as con rma- tory quantitative empirical investigations. Research limitations / Implictions: Given the database-centered, eclectic nature of the analytical approach, it is unlikely that every available and applicable scienti c publication is included in the analysis. Furthermore, the classi cation of the studies according to certain criteria leads to a loss of information and sometimes can- not be conducted free of doubt since studies occasionally touch multiple criteria. Originality / Value: Against the background of the study’s focus on BMI, its comparably broad literature basis, and its quantitative and qualitative analysis approach, which provides straightforward recommendations for future research, the study caters an original contribution to the eld.

    A meta-analysis of empirical e-government research and its future research implications

    The desired e-government potentials and its shortcomings in reality are key reasons why e-government has become a major topic of interest to academics and practitioners, leading to an extensive body of knowledge. However, the literature still demands further quantitative empirical research to substantiate theory development. This situation calls for a specific review of the literature that arranges relevant knowledge and provides a solid foundation for future research. However, available meta-analyses do not deliver the particular insights to appropriately address the shortage of quantitative empirical e-government research. Therefore, this study explicitly focuses on this specific field to systematically uncover areas requiring further exploration, and defines promising research directions for a solid foundation for future investigations. Key findings of the meta-analysis are: the existence of a systematic divide of existing quantitative empirical e-government studies into 12 research subtopics, which are assessed according to different classification criteria for scientific research gap-spotting; the identification of emerging subtopics that carry innovative research potential; and that e-government is expected to be an ongoing, open-ended research environment that still provides manifold investigative opportunities. Based on these findings, straightforward suggestions for future research are provided. Points for practitioners Beyond providing insights into the current state of quantitative empirical research for scientific researchers, this article also delivers value for professionals working in public management and administration. First, the study provides a comprehensive overview of e-government-related meta-analyses, which allows us to quickly identify the literature in order to tackle particular e-government management issues. Second, the article classifies existing quantitative empirical studies, defines specific subject areas and arranges relevant knowledge, which eases the processes of confining and labelling e-government activities. Last, since these deliverables are based on empirical studies that draw their conclusions from perceptions of reality, the summaries and classifications are thus regarded to be of special importance for public managers. </jats:sec
