Value of Professional Sport Teams in the Community: Reexamining the Measurement Properties of the Community Impact Scale

    Get PDF
The Community Impact Scale was developed by Zhang et al. (1996) to measure essential value dimensions of professional sports in the community. The original scale includes 45 items under eight factors (Community Solidarity, Public Behavior, Social Equity, Pastime Ecstasy, Health Awareness, Individual Quality, Excellence Pursuit, and Business Opportunity). To further ensure its usefulness for theoretical and practical applications, this study re-examined measurement properties of the scale through conducting a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Research participants (N = 349) were residents of three major metropolitan areas, who responded to a survey in various community settings. With some modifications and eliminations of items, the CFA revealed that the eight-factor model with 32 items provided a good fit to the data (e.g., RMSEA = .060; SRMR = .053; CFI =.910). The resolved scale also displayed good convergent and discriminant validity, as well as internal consistency. Discussions are made with respect to the merits of the scale and its research applications in addressing social, political, marketing, and financing issues of professional sport teams

AbstractIn terms of electrical energy, the technical fusion with solar energy system is promisingly applied in order to improve the efficiency in the power applications, since the solar energy system can convert an eternal electric energy in all-year-around. As one of such power applications, we proposed a current charging system for HTS magnet combined with solar energy (CHS). As this system can operate without external utility power to charge the HTS load magnet due to the solar energy, the operating efficiency is practically improved. The power converter, which is interfaced with solar energy and HTS magnet systems, plays an important role to transfer the stable electric energy and thus, the stabilized performance of the converter with solar energy system is one of essential factors. In this study, we investigated various charging performances under different operating conditions of the converter. In addition, operating characteristics have been analyzed by solving solar cell equivalent equations based on circuit simulation program

Protective Effect of Heme Oxygenase-1 on High Glucose-Induced Pancreatic β-Cell Injury

BackgroundGlucose toxicity that is caused by chronic exposure to a high glucose concentration leads to islet dysfunction and induces apoptosis in pancreatic β-cells. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) has been identified as an anti-apoptotic and cytoprotective gene. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether HO-1 up-regulation when using metalloprotophyrin (cobalt protoporphyrin, CoPP) could protect pancreatic β-cells from high glucose-induced apoptosis.MethodsReverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was performed to analyze the CoPP-induced mRNA expression of HO-1. Cell viability of INS-1 cells cultured in the presence of CoPP was examined by acridine orange/propidium iodide staining. The generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) was measured using flow cytometry. Glucose stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) was determined following incubation with CoPP in different glucose concentrations.ResultsCoPP increased HO-1 mRNA expression in both a dose- and time-dependent manner. Overexpression of HO-1 inhibited caspase-3, and the number of dead cells in the presence of CoPP was significantly decreased when exposed to high glucose conditions (HG). CoPP also decreased the generation of intracellular ROS by 50% during 72 hours of culture with HG. However, decreased GSIS was not recovered even in the presence of CoPP.ConclusionOur data suggest that CoPP-induced HO-1 up-regulation results in protection from high glucose-induced apoptosis in INS-1 cells; however, glucose stimulated insulin secretion is not restored

Objectives Since Korea is geographically close to China (the origin site for Asian sand dust [ASD]) the health influence of ASD event will be still greater in Korea. We aimed to evaluate the effect of PM10 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter 100 μg/m3) Results There was no significant difference between group A and B in nasal symptoms and PNIF during the 120-day period. Changes in nasal symptoms and PNIF were not statistically significant before or after a PM10 concentration rise above 100 μg/m3. Conclusion Low concentration PM10 does not have significant effect on nasal symptoms and PNIF in AR patients

Background: Because strict glucose control is important for reducing the complications of diabetes, the self-monitoring of blood glucose is one of the fundamental treatment modalities. Many glucometers have been developed. In the present study, we evaluated a new glucometer: GlucoDr (TM) Plus (Allmedicus, Anyang, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea). Methods: The evaluation was performed based on Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines. Interferences by ascorbic acid, uric acid, maltose, and acetaminophen were examined, and the performance of the unit was compared to those of six other glucometers. The effects of hematocrit, of oxygen partial pressure (PaO(2)), and of multiple users were also evaluated. Results: Within-run, between-run, between- day, and total imprecision (coefficients of variation) were 0.99-4.98%. Satisfactory linearity was found for glucose concentrations of 32.5-786.5 mg/dL (R(2) = 0.9985). A comparison with the reference laboratory method showed close concordance over the entire range of concentrations evaluated (R(2) = 0.9869). No significant effects were noted due to added interferents, hematocrit, and PaO(2). Conclusions: The GlucoDr Plus showed acceptable performance in terms of precision and linearity. It was minimally affected by various interferents. GlucoDr Plus is suitable for the self-monitoring of blood glucose by patients with diabetes.Schleis TG, 2007, PHARMACOTHERAPY, V27, P1313Tsujimura S, 2006, BIOSCI BIOTECH BIOCH, V70, P654D`Orazio P, 2006, CLIN CHEM LAB MED, V44, P1486, DOI 10.1515/CCLM.2006.275Nathan DM, 2005, NEW ENGL J MED, V353, P2643Wild S, 2004, DIABETES CARE, V27, P1047*CLIN LAB STAND I, 2004, EP5A2 CLSI*CLIN LAB STAND I, 2003, EP6A CLSI*INT ORG STAND, 2003, 151972003E ISO*CLIN LAB STAND I, 2002, EP7A CLISTang ZP, 2001, CRIT CARE MED, V29, P1062Tang ZP, 2000, AM J CLIN PATHOL, V113, P75Turner RC, 1998, LANCET, V352, P837*CLIN LAB STAND I, 1995, EP9A CLSI1994, DIABETES CARE, V17, P81MERENSTEIN GB, 1993, PEDIATRICS, V92, P4741993, N ENGL J MED, V329, P977BARRETT AE, 1979, J CLIN PATHOL, V32, P893

Low-temperature formation of epitaxial graphene on 6H-SiC induced by continuous electron beam irradiation

    Get PDF
It is observed that epitaxial graphene forms on the surface of a 6H-SiC substrate by irradiating electron beam directly on the sample surface in high vacuum at relatively low temperature (similar to 670 degrees C). The symmetric shape and full width at half maximum of 2D peak in the Raman spectra indicate that the formed epitaxial graphene is turbostratic. The gradual change of the Raman spectra with electron beam irradiation time increasing suggests that randomly distributed small grains of epitaxial graphene form first and grow laterally to cover the entire irradiated area. The sheet resistance of epitaxial graphene film is measured to be similar to 6.7 k Omega/sq.open4

Background Mammary gland tumors are the most common tumors in sexually intact female dogs; however, they are rare in male dogs. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between sexual hormones and mammary gland tumors in a male dog. Case presentation A 13-year-old, intact male Cocker Spaniel presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Kangwon National University, Republic of Korea, with an acute right ruptured caudal abdominal mass. Physical examination revealed a 14 × 14 cm ruptured mass in the right caudal abdomen, as well as a 1.5 × 1.5 cm mass in the first right mammary gland. The estrogen and progesterone concentrations in serum were within normal levels. Total mastectomy was done on the right side mammary glands. Following surgery, the site was fully recovered; however, a mass that had grown to 2 × 2 cm was found in the left fifth mammary gland and a testis tumor was also found over the period of 4 months. Mastectomy was performed on the left caudal mammary gland and castration was also performed. After the final surgery, the dog fully recovered. Histopathological examination of all three masses revealed high grade mammary adenocarcinoma in the mammary gland and the testis was diagnosed as Leydig cell adenoma. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that the estrogen and progesterone receptors were expressed on limited cells in mammary and testis tumors. Conclusion The results of this study suggest that mammary tumors and testes tumors can occur in male dogs without relationship to female sexual hormone
