Topotactic-hydrogen forms chains in ABABO2_2 nickelate superconductors

Despite enormous experimental and theoretical efforts, obtaining generally accepted conclusions regarding the intrinsic magnetic and electronic properties of superconducting nickelates remains exceptionally challenging. Experiments show a significant degree of uncertainty, indicating hidden factors in the synthesized films, which call for further investigations. One of those "hidden factors" is the possibility of intercalating hydrogen during the chemical reduction process from Nd(La)NiO3_3 to Nd(La)NiO2_2 using CaH2_2. While hydrogen has been detected in experimental samples, not much is known about its distribution through the crystal and its influence on the electronic environment. Here, we show the tendency toward the formation of one-dimensional hydrogen chains in infinite-layers LaNiO2_2 superconductors using density-functional theory (DFT) supplemented by dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The formation of such hydrogen chains induces a coexistence of different oxidation states of Ni and competing magnetic phases, and possibly explains the recently observed charge order states in nickelate superconductors. Furthermore, it contributes to the difficulty of synthesizing homogeneous nickelates and determining their ground states. The smoking gun to detect excess hydrogen in nickelates are flat phonon modes, which are infrared active and quite insensitive to the exact arrangement of the H atoms.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, under PRB revie

Postconditioning inhibits myocardial apoptosis during prolonged reperfusion via a JAK2-STAT3-Bcl-2 pathway

Abstract

Background

Postconditioning (PostC) inhibits myocardial apoptosis after ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. The JAK2-STAT3 pathway has anti-apoptotic effects and plays an essential role in the late protection of preconditioning. Our aim was to investigate the anti-apoptotic effect of PostC after prolonged reperfusion and the role of the JAK2-STAT3 pathway in the anti-apoptotic effect of PostC.

Methods

Wistar rats were subjected to 30 minutes ischemia and 2 or 24 hours (h) reperfusion, with or without PostC (three cycles of 10 seconds reperfusion and 10 seconds reocclusion at the onset of reperfusion). Separate groups of rats were treated with a JAK2 inhibitor (AG490) or a PI3K inhibitor (wortmannin) 5 minutes before PostC. Immunohistochemistry was used to analyze Bcl-2 protein levels after reperfusion. mRNA levels of Bcl-2 were detected by qRT-PCR. TTC staining was used to detect myocardial infarction size. Myocardial apoptosis was evaluated by TUNEL staining. Western-blot was used to detect p-STAT3 and p-Akt levels after reperfusion.

Results

There was more myocardial apoptosis at 24 h <it>vs </it>2 h after reperfusion in all groups. PostC significantly reduced myocardial apoptosis and elevated Bcl-2 levels at both 2 and 24 hours after reperfusion. PostC increased p-STAT3 and p-Akt levels after reperfusion. Administration of AG490 reduced p-STAT3 and p-Akt levels and attenuated the anti-apoptotic effect of PostC. Wortmannin also reduced p-Akt levels and attenuated the anti-apoptotic effect of PostC but had no effect on p-STAT3 levels. AG490 abrogated the up-regulation of Bcl-2 by PostC.

Conclusion

PostC may reduce myocardial apoptosis during prolonged reperfusion via a JAK2-STAT3-Bcl-2 pathway. As a downstream target of JAK2 signaling, activation of PI3K/Akt pathway may be necessary in the protection of PostC.</p

Homology Inference of Protein-Protein Interactions via Conserved Binding Sites

The coverage and reliability of protein-protein interactions determined by high-throughput experiments still needs to be improved, especially for higher organisms, therefore the question persists, how interactions can be verified and predicted by computational approaches using available data on protein structural complexes. Recently we developed an approach called IBIS (Inferred Biomolecular Interaction Server) to predict and annotate protein-protein binding sites and interaction partners, which is based on the assumption that the structural location and sequence patterns of protein-protein binding sites are conserved between close homologs. In this study first we confirmed high accuracy of our method and found that its accuracy depends critically on the usage of all available data on structures of homologous complexes, compared to the approaches where only a non-redundant set of complexes is employed. Second we showed that there exists a trade-off between specificity and sensitivity if we employ in the prediction only evolutionarily conserved binding site clusters or clusters supported by only one observation (singletons). Finally we addressed the question of identifying the biologically relevant interactions using the homology inference approach and demonstrated that a large majority of crystal packing interactions can be correctly identified and filtered by our algorithm. At the same time, about half of biological interfaces that are not present in the protein crystallographic asymmetric unit can be reconstructed by IBIS from homologous complexes without the prior knowledge of crystal parameters of the query protein

IntroductionThe efficacy and safety of 3% diquafosol sodium eye drops in Chinese patients with dry eye in the real-world setting remains unclear.Methods3099 patients with dry eye symptoms were screened according to Asia Dry Eye Society latest recommendation. Among them, 3000 patients were enrolled for a phase IV study. We followed up with multiple clinical characteristics including corneal fluorescein staining, tear break up time, Schirmer’s tests, visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and others. The follow ups were performed at baseline, 2 weeks and 4 weeks after treatment.ResultsBased on the results of corneal fluorescein staining and tear break up time, all age and gender subgroups exhibited obvious alleviation of the symptoms among the patients with dry eye, and the data in elderly group showed the most significant alleviation. All the adverse drug reactions (ADRs, 6.17%) were recorded, among which 6% local ocular ADRs were included. Meanwhile, mild ADRs (91.8%) accounted for the most. Most of the ADRs (89.75%) got a quick and full recovery, with an average time at 15.6 days. 1.37% of patients dropped out of the study due to ADRs.DiscussionThe use of 3% diquafosol sodium eye drop is effective and safe in the treatment of dry eye, with a low incidence of ADRs showing mild symptoms. This trial was registered at Chinese Clinical Trial Registry ID: ChiCTR1900021999 (Registration Date: 19/03/2019)

The effect of widowhood on depression of caregivers

Abstract Background It is known that caregivers are more likely to be depressed compared to those without caregiving burden. The disappearance of caregiving burden after widowhood may alleviate depression, but at the same time the diminishment of marital resources caused by widowhood may exacerbate depression. So, what effect does widowhood have on depression among caregivers?, which was valuable for promoting the mental health of caregivers in the context of China’s aging. Methods China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), a longitudinal data, was selected and the effect of widowhood on depression among middle-aged and elderly caregivers was explored by using Ordinary Least Squares and Propensity Score Matching methods based on 2018 CHARLS data. The channels and subgroup difference were also analyzed. Results Widowhood significantly increased CES-D scores of caregivers, and there were higher CES-D scores among women, the middle-aged, rural residents, and those with higher levels of education. Widowhood increased depression of caregivers through reducing personal economic resources, and increasing possibilities to live with children and participate in social activities. Conclusions Caregivers who experienced widowhood tend to be depressed and concerted efforts are needed. On the one hand, more social security measures and economic subsidy policy should focus on the middle-aged adults and elderly who experienced widowhood. On the other one hand, it is helpful to relieve depression by providing more social support from society and families to the middle-aged adults and elderly who experienced widowhood

Saliency detection using adaptive background template

    No full text
Since most existing saliency detection models are not suitable for the condition that the salient objects are near at the image border, the authors propose a saliency detection approach based on adaptive background template (SCB) despite of the position of the salient objects. First, a selection strategy is presented to establish the adaptive background template by removing the potential saliency superpixels from the image border regions, and the initial saliency map is obtained. Second, a propagation mechanism based on K‐means algorithm is designed for maintaining the neighbourhood coherence of the above saliency map. Finally, a new spatial prior is presented to integrate the saliency detection results by aggregating two complementary measures such as image centre preference and the background template exclusion. Comprehensive evaluations on six benchmark datasets indicate that the authors’ method outperforms other state‐of‐the‐art approaches. In addition, a new dataset containing 300 challenging images is constructed for evaluating the performance of various salient object detection methods
