Polarisation measurements with a CdTe pixel array detector for Laue hard X-ray focusing telescopes
Polarimetry is an area of high energy astrophysics which is still relatively
unexplored, even though it is recognized that this type of measurement could
drastically increase our knowledge of the physics and geometry of high energy
sources. For this reason, in the context of the design of a Gamma-Ray Imager
based on new hard-X and soft gamma ray focusing optics for the next ESA Cosmic
Vision call for proposals (Cosmic Vision 2015-2025), it is important that this
capability should be implemented in the principal on-board instrumentation. For
the particular case of wide band-pass Laue optics we propose a focal plane
based on a thick pixelated CdTe detector operating with high efficiency between
60-600 keV. The high segmentation of this type of detector (1-2 mm pixel size)
and the good energy resolution (a few keV FWHM at 500 keV) will allow high
sensitivity polarisation measurements (a few % for a 10 mCrab source in 106s)
to be performed. We have evaluated the modulation Q factors and minimum
detectable polarisation through the use of Monte Carlo simulations (based on
the GEANT 4 toolkit) for on and off-axis sources with power law emission
spectra using the point spread function of a Laue lens in a feasible

Detection of electronic nematicity using scanning tunneling microscopy
Electronic nematic phases have been proposed to occur in various correlated
electron systems and were recently claimed to have been detected in scanning
tunneling microscopy (STM) conductance maps of the pseudogap states of the
cuprate high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi-2212). We
investigate the influence of anisotropic STM tip structures on such
measurements and establish, with a model calculation, the presence of a
tunneling interference effect within an STM junction that induces
energy-dependent symmetry-breaking features in the conductance maps. We
experimentally confirm this phenomenon on different correlated electron
systems, including measurements in the pseudogap state of Bi-2212, showing that
the apparent nematic behavior of the imaged crystal lattice is likely not due
to nematic order but is related to how a realistic STM tip probes the band
structure of a material. We further establish that this interference effect can
be used as a sensitive probe of changes in the momentum structure of the

Characterization of cutaneous and articular sensory neurons
Background: A wide range of stimuli can activate sensory neurons and neurons innervating specific tissues often have distinct properties. Here we used retrograde tracing to identify sensory neurons innervating the hind paw skin (cutaneous) and ankle/knee joints (articular), and combined immunohistochemistry and electrophysiology analysis to determine the neurochemical phenotype of cutaneous and articular neurons, as well as their electrical and chemical excitability.
Results: Immunohistochemistry analysis using RetroBeads as a retrograde tracer confirmed previous data that cutaneous and articular neurons are a mixture of myelinated and unmyelinated neurons, and the majority of both populations are peptidergic. In whole-cell patch-clamp recordings from cultured dorsal root ganglion neurons, voltage-gated inward currents and action potential parameters were largely similar between articular and cutaneous neurons, although cutaneous neuron action potentials had a longer half-peak duration. An assessment of chemical sensitivity showed that all neurons responded to a pH 5.0 solution, but that acid-sensing ion channel (ASIC) currents, determined by inhibition with the non-selective ASIC antagonist benzamil, were of a greater magnitude in cutaneous compared to articular neurons. 40 – 50% of cutaneous and articular neurons responded to capsaicin, cinnamaldehyde and menthol, indicating similar expression levels of TRPV1, TRPA1 and TRPM8 respectively. By contrast, significantly more articular neurons responded to ATP than cutaneous neurons.
Conclusion: This work makes a detailed characterization of cutaneous and articular sensory neurons, and highlights the importance of making recordings from identified neuronal populations: sensory neurons innervating different tissues have subtly different properties, possibly reflecting different functions.ISS was funded by an Erasmus for Graduate Students grant from the University of Coimbra. Exploring access to end of life care for ethnic minorities with end stage kidney disease through recruitment in action research
BACKGROUND: Variation in provision of palliative care in kidney services and practitioner concerns to provide equitable access led to the development of this study which focussed on the perspectives of South Asian patients and their care providers. As people with a South Asian background experience a higher risk of Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) and end stage kidney failure (ESKF) compared to the majority population but wait longer for a transplant, there is a need for end of life care to be accessible for this group of patients. Furthermore because non English speakers and people at end of life are often excluded from research there is a dearth of research evidence with which to inform service improvement. This paper aims to explore issues relating to the process of recruitment of patients for a research project which contribute to our understanding of access to end of life care for ethnic minority patients in the kidney setting. METHODS: The study employed an action research methodology with interviews and focus groups to capture and reflect on the process of engaging with South Asian patients about end of life care. Researchers and kidney care clinicians on four NHS sites in the UK recruited South Asian patients with ESKF who were requiring end of life care to take part in individual interviews; and other clinicians who provided care to South Asian kidney patients at end of life to take part in focus groups exploring end of life care issues. In action research planning, action and evaluation are interlinked and data were analysed with emergent themes fed back to care providers through the research cycle. Reflections on the process of patient recruitment generated focus group discussions about access which were analysed thematically and reported here. RESULTS: Sixteen patients were recruited to interview and 45 different care providers took part in 14 focus groups across the sites. The process of recruiting patients to interview and subsequent focus group data highlighted some of the key issues concerning access to end of life care. These were: the identification of patients approaching end of life; and their awareness of end of life care; language barriers and informal carers' roles in mediating communication; and contrasting cultures in end of life kidney care. CONCLUSIONS: Reflection on the process of recruitment in this action research study provided insight into the complex scenario of end of life in kidney care. Some of the emerging issues such as the difficulty identifying patients are likely to be common across all patient groups, whilst others concerning language barriers and third party communication are more specific to ethnic minorities. A focus on South Asian ethnicity contributes to better understanding of patient perspectives and generic concepts as well as access to end of life kidney care for this group of patients in the UK. Action research was a useful methodology for achieving this and for informing future research to include informal carers and other ethnic groups.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
Dental Students’ Perceptions of and Experiences with Prosthodontics: Ten Graduating Classes at One Institution
It is important for members of the dental specialties to understand what motivates students to enter the specialty in order to ensure its continuing development and ability to meet patient needs. The aim of this study was to compare ten graduating classes at Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) regarding students' experiences with and perceptions of prosthodontics and factors influencing those interested in pursuing prosthodontics as a specialty. In 2013, HSDM students in the classes of 2012-16 were surveyed, achieving a response rate of 81%. Survey questions sought information regarding specialty choice, factors influencing the choice, student experiences with prosthodontics, and student perceptions of the dental disciplines. Responses were compared to those from a prior study of the HSDM classes of 2007-11. The responses showed a decrease in negative student experiences with prosthodontics. The students regarded prosthodontics highly for its impact on patient quality of life; however, students interested in pursuing prosthodontics as a specialty decreased. All students said provider enjoyment was most important in choice of specialty. Cost of program, patient type, and program location were factors that especially influenced students interested in prosthodontics. The improved student experiences with and perspectives on prosthodontics may be a result of a curriculum change that led to more prosthodontics procedures and case completions by students. The fall in students interested in prosthodontics may have resulted from prosthodontic faculty transitions that occurred when the survey was conducted, as well as large debt burdens in spite of the fact that prosthodontists' earnings are among the highest in dentistry. Faculty must educate and mentor students about the realities of the profession, provide positive learning experiences in the field, and encourage students who enjoy prosthodontics to pursue specialty training
Factors Influencing Dental Students’ Specialty Choice: A Survey of Ten Graduating Classes at One Institution
The aim of this study was to survey ten graduating classes at Harvard School of Dental Medicine regarding students' specialty choice and factors influencing that choice. Students were surveyed once in 2008 (for the Classes of 2007-11) and again in 2013 (for the Classes of 2012-16). A prior article reported results regarding students' interest in and experiences with prosthodontics; this article presents results regarding their interest in all dental specialties and factors influencing those interests. Of a total 176 students in the Classes of 2012-16, 143 responded to the survey, for a response rate of 81%, compared to a 95% response rate (167 of total 176 students) for the Classes of 2007-11. The results showed that orthodontics was the most popular specialty choice, followed by oral and maxillofacial surgery. From the 2008 to the 2013 survey groups, there was an increase in the percentages of students planning to pursue oral and maxillofacial surgery, pediatric dentistry, and postdoctoral general dentistry. The educational debt these students expected to accrue by graduation also increased. The largest percentage of students chose "enjoyment of providing the specialty service" as the factor most influencing their specialty choice. "Prior dental school experience" and "faculty influence" were greater influences for students pursuing specialties than those pursuing postdoctoral general dentistry. Increased interest in particular disciplines may be driven by high debt burdens students face upon graduation. Factors related to mentoring especially influenced students pursuing specialties, demonstrating the importance of student experiences outside direct patient care for exposure to the work of specialists beyond the scope of predoctoral training. This finding suggests that dental schools should increase mentoring efforts to help students make career decisions based not on financial burden but rather on personal interest in the specialty, which is likely to have a more satisfying result for them in the long run

The elastic constants of MgSiO3 perovskite at pressures and temperatures of the Earth's mantle
The temperature anomalies in the Earth's mantle associated with thermal
convection1 can be inferred from seismic tomography, provided that the elastic
properties of mantle minerals are known as a function of temperature at mantle
pressures. At present, however, such information is difficult to obtain
directly through laboratory experiments. We have therefore taken advantage of
recent advances in computer technology, and have performed finite-temperature
ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of the elastic properties of MgSiO3
perovskite, the major mineral of the lower mantle, at relevant thermodynamic
conditions. When combined with the results from tomographic images of the
mantle, our results indicate that the lower mantle is either significantly
anelastic or compositionally heterogeneous on large scales. We found the
temperature contrast between the coldest and hottest regions of the mantle, at
a given depth, to be about 800K at 1000 km, 1500K at 2000 km, and possibly over
