    Intertestuale, intermediale e crossmediale, e il gusto dell’inatteso, in Breaking Bad

    We will explore some items of transmedia storytelling, intertextuality and intermediality in Breaking Bad, the US TV series that ran from 2008 to 2013 and won multiple awards for directing and screenplay. Nowadays, contemporary tv series are studied as “complex tv” or “serial medial ecosystems” and Breaking Bad has been often defined both “cinematic” then a “postmodern western”. Therefore, we will analyze some socio-cultural and semiotic mechanisms of its relations to movies, to genres like western and noir, to music video, to advertisements and so on, looking for an innovative intermedial way of serial tv fiction, which works crossing the borders between mediaBreaking Bad Ăš una serie per molti aspetti indecidibile nel genere, che presenta un’intertestualitĂ  aperta e cangiante, tra serialitĂ  televisiva e cinema d’autore (ad esempio tra western e poliziesco), e si apre all’innovazione intermediale, data non solo dall’ibridazione dei generi e della fiction seriale con il cinema, ma dai modi metadiscorsivi (o 'metacinematografici') e da soluzioni che lavorano sui bordi dei media e sulla loro porositĂ  grazie alle nuove tecnologie digitali. Passando attraverso esempi di modi traduttivi e reinterpretativi, intertestuali e intermediali, transmediali e crossmediali, cercherĂČ di analizzare alcuni meccanismi di funzionamento degli attuali ecosistemi mediali seriali in Breaking Bad. Ad esempio nelle citazioni dirette e indirette, nelle aperture intertestuali e intermediali, ma anche nei teaser e nei recaps, nei webisode e nelle proliferazioni crossmediali delle pratiche dei remixer, distinguendo tra ripetizione e innovazione, tra modi centripeti e centrifughi dello storytelling e, per i remix, tra modi della selezione e modi della collezione

    A produção agrĂ­cola estĂĄ sob constante pressĂŁo de ataque de pragas comprometendo a produtividade. Entre as ferramentas de combate estĂĄ a obtenção de variedades resistentes e a utilização de plantas geneticamente modificadas (PGM). Entretanto, para estas Ășltimas sĂŁo levantadas questĂ”es sobre os riscos para o meio ambiente e o homem. Para responder a estas questĂ”es e normatizar o processo de avaliação e aprovação de PGM foram criados dispositivos legais na forma de regulamentaçÔes nacionais e internacionais. Visando o desenvolvimento de anĂĄlise de riscos, em nĂ­vel nacional, e o atendimento Ă  legislação vigente, foi estruturada uma Rede de Pesquisa pela Embrapa - a BioSeg. Ela estuda os riscos ambiental e alimentar de: ALGODÃO (resistente a insetos), BATATA (resistente ao virus Y), FEIJÃO (resistente ao virus do mosaico dourado), MAMÃO (resistente ao vĂ­rus da mancha anelar), SOJA (tolerante ao glifosato). A vivĂȘncia de 4 anos de trabalho desta Rede serĂĄ apresentada, com ĂȘnfase nos resultados alcançados e perspectivas futuras. Financiamento: Embrapa (0102201) e Finep (01020162-00).     Intermediale, transmediale, crossmediale in "Westworld"

    In this essay we will discuss through the lens of Lotman’s “semiosphere” (1984) the media ecosystem (Pescatore, 2018) of the HBO show "Westworld" (Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, 2016 – ongoing). The replicability thematized in it, between loops, repetitions, memorial overlaps, together with the problem of consciousness and empathy which distinguish a human being from a cyborg since P.K. Dick’s science fiction stories, define a constantly translating and reinterpreting fictional universe. Observing a sequence from the first episode of the first season and the mobile video game linked to the show, we propose a continuum that crosses the "Westworld" semiosphere, intended here as a complex set of relationships – inter-textual and inter-medial, trans-medial and cross-medial – that can be interpreted coherently. In this continuum we see on the one hand the intertextual and intermedial relations that retranslate the fictional universe into an intersemiotic continuity that moves from the 1973 movie “Westworld” (Michael Crichton) and its sequel, continues through the TV show “Beyond Westworld” (Lou Shaw) briefly aired in 1980, and lands in the transmedia continuity on which the HBO show "Westworld" and its promotional paratexts are built. On the other hand we propose to place crossmedia products like video games and fan works on the opposite pole of the continuum, in partial discontinuity with the original fictional world. We intend intermediality not only as a hybridization of thresholds between media (Rajewsky, 2005), but also as a bridge of continuity and a translation invariance (Dusi, 2015). In these terms, also adaptation, remake, repetition, and variation, are to be considered inter-medial products. Intermediality so becomes one of the poles of an interpretative and transformative process based on mechanisms of translation, to be always considered in their sociocultural context and constraints. On the other pole we will instead have all the cross-medial practices allowed by a strong discontinuity from their sources, as mash-ups and creative reworkings produced by the fans. In the tension between these two poles, in the middle of the semiotic continuum, we will find re-elaborations and transmedial expansions that have a continuity with the reference fictional world (like remixes). In our opinion, this idea broadens Jenkins' distinction between "adaptation" and "extension", the former taking the same narrative from one medium and telling it again in another, and the latter trying to add something to the existing story in its passage from one medium to another (2011). We will therefore talk about intermediality in front of adaptations and remakes, and about transmediality when the original fictional world is extended through inventions and new variants (like sequels, prequels, paraquels), also reaching radical transformations as in the case of cross-media products

    We will examine two recent site-specific dance creations: Hofesh Schechter\u2019s Coda and Saburo Teshigawara\u2019s Pointed Peak. The description of the experience of these performances for an \u201cethnographer\u201d viewer will lead us to use the semiotic theories of corporality, of \u201cperceptive\u201d mediality, and the theory of intersemiotic translation, as well as the socio-semiotics of risk and interactions. The inter-sensory and intermedial translatability among different systems of meaning can be analyzed \u201cbelow\u201d the manifest level of the signs, namely in the conflict zone of the figural tensions. At a more global level, socio-semiotic interaction regimes explain performance-driven micro-narratives among museum spaces, works of art, and viewers, in a dynamic and sensitive adjustment of forces

    RESUMO: A tecnologia do DNA recombinante abriu, juntamente com um horizonte ilimitado de possibilidades de inovaçÔes, polĂȘmicas que nĂŁo podem ser ignoradas ou resolvidas por meio de uma difusĂŁo linear de informaçÔes. AçÔes multidisciplinares e multi-institucionais tĂȘm sido implementadas, com sucesso, em diversos paĂ­ses, para estabelecer novas formas de comunicação entre peritos e leigos. Isso permite identificar possĂ­veis restriçÔes e benefĂ­cios nas trajetĂłrias tecnolĂłgicas, e assim entender e negociar eventuais conflitos. No Brasil, esse tipo de abordagem nĂŁo tem recebido atenção significativa. A metodologia Problem Formulation and Options Assessment (PFOA), articulada no contexto do projeto internacional Genetically Modified Organisms - Environmental Risk Assessment (GMO-ERA), e sintonizada com as novas tendĂȘncias de envolvimento dos diversos setores de interesse (stakeholders) ligados a uma tecnologia, propĂ”e integrar na anĂĄlise de risco as perspectivas ambiental, social, econĂŽmica e Ă©tica. A equipe de implementação de uma experiĂȘncia piloto do PFOA foi formada pelo grupo do GMOERA - ligado ao Projeto Rede de Biossegurança (BioSeg), da Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa AgropecuĂĄria (Embrapa), pelo Instituto de Pesquisa em Riscos e Sustentabilidade, da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (Iris-UFSC), e pelo Centro de GestĂŁo de Estudos EstratĂ©gicos do MinistĂ©rio da CiĂȘncia e Tecnologia (CGEE/MCT). O caso utilizado como modelo foi o feijĂŁo geneticamente modificado resistente ao mosaico-dourado, que vem sendo desenvolvido pela Embrapa. O piloto, financiado pelo CGEE/MCT, contou com a participação de diversos stakeholders. Dentre as conclusĂ”es, recomenda-se o uso de sistemas de informação nĂŁo unidirecionados, mais transparentes e abertos, baseados em uma ciĂȘncia rigorosa, para subsidiar as instĂąncias cientĂ­ficas e polĂ­ticas nas tomadas de decisĂŁo. abstract: Recombinant DNA technology, together with an unlimited horizon of possibilities of innovation, triggered a discussion, among stakeholders, that cannot be ignored or solved through a linear difusion of information. Multidisciplinary and multi-institutional actions are being successfully adopted in several countries to establish new communication strategies between specialists and stakeholders. These strategies allow the identification of possible constraints and benefits of a technology during its development and, consequently, understanding and negotiation of conflicts. In Brazil this approach is not being used yet. The Problem Formulation and Options Assessment (PFOA) methodology was proposed by the Genetically Modified Organisms - Environmental Risk Assessment (GMO-ERA) project, aligned with the new trend of involving stakeholders in the risk assessment of a new technology. PFOA integrates the environmental, social, economic and ethical perspectives into the risk assessment of a technology. PFOA's pilot experience was conducted by a group formed by the GMO-ERA team associated with the Biosafety Network (BioSeg) project of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), by the Institute of Research in Risk and Sustainability from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Iris-UFSC) and by the Center for Strategic Management and Studies in Science, Technology and Innovation of the Ministry of Science and Technology (CGEE/ MCT). The case study was a genetically modified bean resistant to the golden mosaic disease, which is being developed by Embrapa. This pilot was funded by CGEE/MCT and gathered representatives of several stakeholders. It could be concluded that the use of non-directed, transparent, open and science-based communication approaches is of great value for scientific and political decision making instances
