Anisotropic Electron Spin Lifetime in (In,Ga)As/GaAs (110) Quantum Wells
Anisotropic electron spin lifetimes in strained undoped (In,Ga)As/GaAs (110)
quantum wells of different width and height are investigated by time-resolved
Faraday rotation and time-resolved transmission and are compared to the
(001)-orientation. From the suppression of spin precession, the ratio of
in-plane to out-of-plane spin lifetimes is calculated. Whereas the ratio
increases with In concentration in agreement with theory, a surprisingly high
anisotropy of 480 is observed for the broadest quantum well, when expressed in
terms of spin relaxation times.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, revise

Translation of Anticancer Efficacy From Nonclinical Models to the Clinic
Mouse cancer models have provided critical insights into tumor biology; however, clinical translation of these findings has been challenging. This perspective posits that factors impacting on successful translation start with limitations in capturing human cancer pathophysiology and end with challenges in generating robust translatable preclinical end points. A comprehensive approach that considers clinically relevant mouse models with both an integrated biomarker strategy and a complementary modeling and simulation effort will strengthen the current oncology drug development paradigm
Microstructure identification via detrended fluctuation analysis of ultrasound signals
We describe an algorithm for simulating ultrasound propagation in random
one-dimensional media, mimicking different microstructures by choosing physical
properties such as domain sizes and mass densities from probability
distributions. By combining a detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) of the
simulated ultrasound signals with tools from the pattern-recognition
literature, we build a Gaussian classifier which is able to associate each
ultrasound signal with its corresponding microstructure with a very high
success rate. Furthermore, we also show that DFA data can be used to train a
multilayer perceptron which estimates numerical values of physical properties
associated with distinct microstructures.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Motivation-related predictors of physical activity engagement and vitality in rheumatoid arthritis patients
This study tests the Basic Psychological Needs Theory (within the Self-determination framework), in relation to the prediction of physical activity and well-being among rheumatoid arthritis patients. Motivation regulations for physical activity were also considered in the process model. A total of 207 patients (150 females, mean age = 58 ± 11 years) completed a questionnaire pack and structural equation modelling was used to test expected relationships. Autonomy support provided by important other(s) regarding physical activity positively predicted rheumatoid arthritis patients’ need satisfaction which positively related to autonomous reasons for physical activity participation. Autonomous motivation positively predicted reported physical activity participation levels and feelings of vitality
Population inversion of a NAHS mixture adsorbed into a cylindrical pore
A cylindrical nanopore immersed in a non-additive hard sphere binary fluid is
studied by means of integral equation theories and Monte Carlo simulations. It
is found that at low and intermediate values of the bulk total number density
the more concentrated bulk species is preferentially absorbed by the pore, as
expected. However, further increments of the bulk number density lead to an
abrupt population inversion in the confined fluid and an entropy driven
prewetting transition at the outside wall of the pore. These phenomena are a
function of the pore size, the non-additivity parameter, the bulk number
density, and particles relative number fraction. We discuss our results in
relation to the phase separation in the bulk.Comment: 7 pages, 8 Figure
Insoluble glycogen, a metabolizable internal adsorbent, decreases the lethality of endotoxin shock in rats
Insoluble glycogen is an enzymatically modified form of naturally occurring soluble glycogen with a great adsorbing capacity. It can be metabolized by phagocytes to glucose. In this study we used insoluble glycogen intravenously in the experimental endotoxin shock of rats. Wistar male rats were sensitized to endotoxin by Pb acetate. The survival of rats were compared in groups of animals endotoxin shock treated and non-treated with insoluble glycogen. Furthermore, we have determined in vitro the binding capacity of insoluble glycogen for endotoxin, tumour necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-1 and secretable phospholipase A2. Use of 10 mg/kg dose of insoluble glycogen could completely prevent the lethality of shock induced by LD50 quantity of endotoxin in rats. All animals treated survived. Insoluble glycogen is a form of ‘metabolizable internal adsorbents’. It can potentially be
used for treatment of septic shock
